This Bulletin constitutes the Record of
Proceedings of the club meeting held on Tuesday
17th. March, 2015.
At the October meeting the Rotary International Board modified the
Rotary International calendar of special observances to highlight the SIX
areas of Focus. March – Area of Focus: Water and Sanitation.
March – Literacy Month.
Combating illiteracy has been a focus of RI since 1986- and for good
reason. UNESCO estimates there are 862 million illiterate adults in
the world and about two thirds of them are women. Millions more
are functionally illiterate, without the reading and writing skills
necessary for everyday life. The UN has identified literacy as a
major obstacle to economic, political and social development. How
can you be involved? Be a part of the solution for this world wide
problem.

Stand in Sgt John ROBERTS was back, looking after things tonight for Jurg, and after the usual formalities we drank a toast to the
RC’s of Dublin – this being St Patricks Day. Sgt John then attempted to introduce chairman Bill, bypassing the president – probably
still had his mind on the Tigers at Lavington from Saturday!!! Pres Ian welcomed all, with a special welcome tonight to Adrian, our
club guest tonight prior to his induction. With Jade also a late apology tonight, her instruction re the District website will be held
over.
President’s Report – pictured left.
 Helen McCROHAN rang Pres Ian during the week- with some Rotary mail having
been sent to Peter’s home address. Ian took up some of Loretta’s slice, and Helen had
some family visitors with her. “She is doing what has to be done and seems to be coping
quite well” said Pres Ian. Remember Helen, and if you are going by perhaps drop in with
some morning or afternoon tea and see Helen.
 Meeting last Friday with Wodonga West and Belvoir reps re possible
“International Night”. All details to be discussed at Board tonight. The date set is Saturday

May 23 . – two months away. Chance to raise some money for Foundation – with clubs providing the food following
three themes – Italian, Philippines and Indian. Our club allocation – Food: country is Italy – dishes like lasagne, spaghetti
etc. Sweets: We will contact Kooka Bros again to check what they can supply. (Later discussion – if we can get
cheesecakes (French) from Kooka Bros, Matt FLAHERTY said he has a receipe for Tiramisu (to die for!!) thus French/Italian
desert combo – with fruit salad and ice cream added as Australian. Entertainment: – we will seek some African dancers
to perform. Other clubs would supply along countries allocated to them. Hoping for 200 attendees @ $30.00 pp. To be
held at the Raiders Football Clubrooms. Clubs catering ourselves – but Ian suggestion that we contact someone else
(Apex, Innerwheel etc) to serve on the night – we would give them a donation for assisting.

The letter that went to Peter’s was a letter from RC Hervey Bay – re ANZAC biscuit fundraiser. We can purchase
bags/pamphlets from them in which 2 ANZAC biscuits are placed, and sold for $2.00. Biscuits can be made or purchased
from Woollies etc. Costs would be $1.00 and we sell for $2.00 which becomes ours. Packs of 500 bags cost $300.00. If all
sold, make $500 for the club. Will be further discussed. (Rob said that Safeway sell frozen biscuits – all you have to do is
place on tray and cook).
Pres Ian introduced our chairman Bill REYNOLDSON.

PP Robert VOSS: Remember Conference this weekend in Wangaratta. A number of things tonight – Firstly the Mother’s
Day Classic, abt 8 weeks away. Jade and Marg doing lots of work (abt 35 online applications so far). Robert met with Kelly
Miller from the council during the week re last year’s event, and plans for this year. Permit and application for this year
done. Course the same as last year – no other changes noted so far. Check the site also with Jade – an addition this year
will be stalls. Robert has been to RBR Hire re requirements for this year. Things starting to happen – you will hear more
over the coming weeks. Pres Marg reported that Jenny Black/Bravehearts – who are meeting tonight, are again prepared
to be involved. RAMAR group from CCW also available to do face painting. Jade still following up with local ABC re their

position promoting the event this year. Secondly, Footy Gates. A goer. First match May 2 . Rosters/volunteers when
closer. Thirdly, Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon. Signed off last year’s event (have to sign off on all council funding) so
last year all good. Applied again for this year. Robert doing what has to be done following last year’s timeline. PP Robert
passed on greetings from PP Gordon ASHLIN – still keeping busy at Ashlin Computers.

PP/PE John ROBERTS: Aldi BBQ this Saturday. See roster following. “Pay as you go” now, so just the same but we pick up
the tab at completion. We are required to use Aldi product. Early shift, 9.00am to 11.00am. Pres Ian ELSTON, Adrian
CRISP and PP/PE John ROBERTS. Second shift 11.00am to 1.00pm. Bill REYNOLDSON, Sharon BELL and Bev LODDING. (JR
to do trailer, and will be back at the end of second shift to return trailer to garage. JR also reported on eldest son Jarrod
flying out tonight to Europe with his heavy metal band “Desecrator” to do 25 shows in 29 days! Ending up in Russia. All
band members have normal day jobs, “but tats, heavy metal at night!!”
Three Minute Speaker: Chairman Bill introduced Rotarian Matt FLAHERTY for his TMS spot. Matt said that he would talk about
one of his passions- bushwalking. Started in the NE in 1973 – Harrietville as a 13 year old at a school camp. Being a city boy,
coming around a corner at Myrtleford and seeing an image of Mt Buffalo - the colors and light of autumn – stayed with him and
still does. Secondly, one of the days they went to the summit of Mount Feathertop, still with snow at the time, and there is a ridge
there that you can look down the Ovens Valley and the Kiewa Valley. An incredible view that is with Matt to this day – it started
his passion for being in the bush and bushwalking. Matt spoke about meeting with mates at a pub in Carlton, getting on a train
and heading for somewhere like Wangaratta, Yass, Moe - the Snowy Mountains, Gippsland, Walhalla etc. Some fantastic trips. Got
supplies from the old army stores to get geared up, and off into the bush. Set up tent on a ridge somewhere or camp in one of the
many old huts, although some have been lost in the fires over the years. They were helped along the way by one teacher who
taught them about navigation, using cookers, living in the bush - all with the aim of helping them and stopping them getting into
too much trouble. Matt has tried (unsuccessfully) to look him up of late to thank him for helping to fire his passion for the
outdoors.
When a bit older - The Alpine Walking Track (abt 680 km all up) – they decided to do
a three week walk from Walhalla to Mt. Bogong, with two food drops. Some 20 days
later they were a day ahead of schedule, they walked from Mt Bogong down to
Mountain Creek, just near Tawonga. That done, they knew the track continued onto
Canberra, so they planned a second walk from Mt Bogong, back up the Staircase Spur
with full packs - two weeks walk, harder, more rugged but ended up at Kosciusko.
Walked up from Dead Horse Gap rather than the chairlift! At Thredbo, reaching the
Eagles Nest, they enquired about a free beer, having just walked from Mt Bogong.
The answer was “no, because we get crazies like you up here all the time!!”
Matt (pictured right) lost his best walking mate through illness, but with others about
8 years ago, completed the walk from Mt Kosciusko to Canberra. A one week walk –
through ............... to Kiandra and Canberra. A mate (with a fear of snakes – and they
had not seen a snake) stood on one. Result, crook back and a hitch home with some fishermen. Matt continued on by himself for
the last 5 days into Canberra itself.
Has been involved in club based bushwalk search and rescue, training, navigation, skills in the bush to find lost walkers etc.
Mountain Craft course completed – from Howmans Gap – to training in hot desert conditions (Little Desert), snow walks, and
coastal walks for variety. Matt said that for future TMS spots he will tell us about ski mountaineering in New Zealand, or his treks
in Nepal. “The love of being out there is very satisfying, knowing that everything you need for one or two weeks is on your back
and you have to make do with what you have got. Makes you appreciate a hot shower and a warm bed. You don’t miss it too
much when you are out there, but a different mindset when you are on a very long walk. Worry about not getting injured, where
you will stop for lunch, the next campsite, what the view from the next hill is going to be like. That’s it for part 1”.
Chairman Bill thanked Matt for his presentation, and “for making us all envious”.
Induction: Acting Sgt John marched our transferring Rotarian Adrian CRISP to the podium, accompanied by his nominator PP3
Marg, his mother. Pres Ian said that we have got to know Adrian over the last month or so since he has been here, volunteering
for our BBQ’s etc. and that he is a welcome addition to our club, transferring from Corryong. Pres Ian invited Marg to say a few
words of introduction about Adrian, who was invited to join the Corryong club some years ago. Adrian went along to some of their
meetings with Ria his wife, and at one meeting saw presentations of PHF’s to some community members (long working
community members always ready to help anyone but previously recognised). Adrian said that he did not appreciate that that’s
what Rotary had done, and it really impressed him and sparked an interest.
PP3 Marg spoke about having a son as a member of our club – a new dimension to “the family of Rotary” with Anthony also
interested in involving younger members in Rotary. Marg said that Adrian arrives with us bringing with him a record of helping and
a great work ethic- something commented on by his former club, and one that we have seen clear evidence of since attending our
club. Pres Ian thanked Marg for her introduction.
Pres Ian formally inducted Adrian, the format a little different, Adrian transferring from Corryong as a current member, to
continue his membership as one of us. Adrian’s classification is “Tyre Fitter” and it was with much pleasure that Ian presented
Adrian with some of our history documents. Adrian was welcomed with loud applause.
Sgt at Arms: Stand in Sgt John (pictured left) was impressed by the welcome
(more applause than Jurg gets!) and started with some “Irish” jokes. “Two
paddies were working for the city public works department. One would dig a
hole and the other would follow behind him and fill the hole in. They worked up
one side of the street, then down the other, then moved onto the next street,
working furiously all day without rest, one man digging the hole, the other
filling it in again. An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn’t
understand what they were doing. So he asked the hole digger, “I’m impressed
by the effort you two are putting into your work, but I don’t get it – why do you
dig a hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?” The
hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, “Well, I suppose it probably looks odd
because we’re normally a three-person team. But today the lad who plants the
trees called in sick!!”
Onto fines,! The Sgt explained that the fine he wrote about Matt FLAHERTY he wrote using Matt’s pen – Matt being not
perturbed, having something lined up for the Sgt on cross fines! The Sgt dobbed himself in for introducing chairman Bill tonight,
before Pres Ian!! “Father of the year” – Grant TAYLOR, congratulations to Grant and Fiona – and all the best over the coming
months. Newest member Adrian was welcomed with a fine – with the Sgt also echoing Ian’s comments about Adrian’s work ethic
– volunteering for the BBQ’s and city2city before he officially joined our club. Welcome Adrian. PP2 Geoff POLLARD – “for jumping
in ahead of our official greet Rob CURRIE to welcome me to Rotary tonight”. The Sgt put in for Rob CURRIE also, saying it was the
best welcome he had ever received at Rotary, with Rob putting in also. BE Peter – for forgetting the digital recorder tonight and
having to go home to get it (guilty). PP2 Geoff again for the reminder of Kay’s birthday by attendance officer Robert, standing in
for Jade. PP Robert for Rosemary’s birthday, and also their anniversary, a two time fine. No Port Adelaide supporters present, so
the victorious Tiger mob (Sgt John, Sharon and as we now find our Adrian!!) paid for the Tigers and their big win at Lavington on
Saturday. The Sgt went to the match and said the ground looked a picture. Tiger Sharon questioned the Pres. re the Bombers –
“we don’t start until the real stuff starts” said the Pres. Cross fines: Pres Ian put in for Bill for the great job he has done tonight as
a first time chairman. Matt added that he forgot to mention in his TMS role that the teacher he spoke about that helped them got
them lost on their very first adventure – in the snow, in the car before they got there, getting lost near Mansfield and ending up at
Timbertop – before they started their walk! I paid for Matt and commented on his descriptions during his TMS spot about the
views, colors and contrasts he sees in the mountains – easy to see why he takes such great photos. Pres Ian put in for PP Henry,
and I paid – for the photos of the prospective Rotarians in last week’s Bulletin – our grandsons, babies Jack and Jaxon! The Sgt
closed with another Irish joke.
“ Father Murphy walks into pub in Donegal and says to the first man he meets, “Do you want to go to heaven?” The man said, “I
do Father”. The priest said, “Then stand over there against the wall.” Then the priest asked the second man, “Do you want to go to
heaven?” “Certainly Father” was the second man’s reply. “Then stand over there against the wall,” said the priest. Then Father
Murphy walked up to O’Toole and said, “Do you want to go to heaven?” O’Toole said, “No, I don’t Father”. The priest said, “I don’t
believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die you don’t want to go to heaven?” O’Toole said, “Oh, when you die, yes. I
thought you were getting a group together to go on a trip right now!!”
Chairman Bill read the roster for next week. Note a breakfast person required Wednesday week, but none tomorrow (cancelled).
Raffle winner was Sharon BELL Green D 86 – a Kangaroo Paw plant.
Pres Ian thanked Bill for his job as Chairman tonight, further welcomed Adrian, wished all the birthday people all the best and
closed the meeting. Board meeting at PP3 Marg’s followed.
