AERODYNAMICS OF RAIL VEHICLES LESSONS FOR HIGH SPEED AND TUNNEL RAILWAYS Railway Division Lecture 20 April 2015 One Birdcage Walk, London www.imeche.org/events/L6194 PRESENTED BY: Professor Chris Baker Director, Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education AERODYNAMICS OF RAIL VEHICLES TRAINS CAN REDUCE THEIR ENERGY COSTS BY STREAMLINING TRAIN ENDS, REDUCING AERODYNAMIC DRAG. HOWEVER, THIS IS ONLY ONE OF A NUMBER OF DESIGN ISSUES. This lecture will give an overview of the current concerns in aerodynamics and describe the work being carried out at both a fundamental level and for a range of industrial clients by the Aerodynamics Team at the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education, using computational techniques, physical models and on-track measurements. Factors to consider include: • Pressure changes that passengers experience as trains pass through tunnels • Effects of train slipstreams and pressure pulses on waiting passengers • Trackside structures and the stability of trains in high crosswinds Chris will highlight the research findings and what lies ahead for railway aerodynamics. PROFESSOR CHRIS BAKER Director, Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education Chris Baker completed his doctoral studies and a Research Fellowship at St. Catharine’s College at the University of Cambridge before working in the Aerodynamics Unit of British Rail Research, then moving to an academic position in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham. Chris was Director of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education from 2005 to 2014. Whilst remaining a Professor at the University of Birmingham, he is currently on a three-day-a-week secondment as Science Director at the Transport Systems Catapult Centre in Milton Keynes.
