Herbicide Recommendations to Control
Volunteer Glyphosate Tolerant Canola in
Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® Soybeans
TECHNICAL BULLETIN
Based on Monsanto Canada TD Trials from 2013-2014,
there are at least 20 volunteer control treatments, all with
greater than 90% control, for managing glyphosate tolerant
(GT) canola volunteers in Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield®
soybeans. The best way to manage GT canola volunteers is
to start clean with a pre-plant burndown tank mix, and if
needed, an in-crop application to manage flushing GT
volunteer canola.
Two-pass weed management for GT volunteer canola
will help diversify your weed management program;
apply multiple modes of action on every acre to Start
Clean & Stay Clean.
Recommended pre-seed/pre-emergence tank mixes:

Understanding volunteer canola:
 The majority of volunteer canola seedlings
emerge the year after growing a canola crop.1, 2
 The density of volunteers depends on weather,
harvest timing, crop competiveness, previous
volunteer management and other factors.
 Following canola with a cereal or corn crop
provides many excellent herbicide options to
control volunteers.
 In recent years, many volunteer canola control
options have become available for use in Genuity
Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans.
Recommended in-crop tank mixes:
®
Roundup Transorb HC + Heat herbicide
Roundup WeatherMAX® + Viper ADV herbicide
 Herbicide group 14
 Herbicide groups 2 and 6
 Zero documented cases of group 14 herbicide resistance in
Western Canada
 Excellent option with the most re-cropping flexibility the
following year, including canola
 Effective tank mix that provides two modes of action on
many broadleaf weeds
 Effective tank mix provides multiple modes of action on
a broad spectrum of weeds, including wild oats
Roundup Transorb HC + Valtera
™
herbicide
®
Roundup WeatherMAX + Odyssey herbicide
 Herbicide group 14
 Herbicide group 2
 Zero documented cases of group 14 herbicide resistance in
Western Canada
 Provides residual control of flushing volunteers
 Provides residual control of many broadleaf weeds
 Canola (excluding Clearfield) should not be seeded the
year after an Odyssey application
 Residual effects help reduce later flushes and provides incrop application flexibility
®
Roundup WeatherMAX + Reflex herbicide
 Herbicide group 14
 Effective tank mix that provides two modes of action on
many broadleaf weeds
 Reflex is only registered for use in the Manitoba Red
River Valley

Two-Pass Volunteer GT Canola Control Treatments
Two pass programs provide excellent control of volunteer GT canola over a broad geography (28-35 DAT)

General Tips for Effective Control:
 Small volunteer canola (<4 leaf) is easier to control than large volunteer canola.
 Ensure proper spray coverage when utilizing contact herbicides such as Heat.
 Heat, Viper ADV, Odyssey and Reflex will work best when applied to emerged volunteer canola.
 Valtera is a residual herbicide that requires moisture after application; it is best to apply prior to volunteer
emergence.
Summary:
 Most volunteer canola emerges in the year following a canola crop.
 Crop rotation allows for more herbicide diversity to manage a broad spectrum of weeds, including volunteer
canola.
 Newer tank mix options are now available for use in Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans that effectively
manage canola volunteers.

ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW PESTICIDE LABEL DIRECTIONS. Roundup Ready® crops contain genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup® brand agricultural
herbicides. Roundup® brand agricultural herbicides will kill crops that are not tolerant to glyphosate. Tank mixtures: The applicable labeling for each product must be in the possession of the user at the
time of application. Follow applicable use instructions, including application rates, precautions and restrictions of each product used in the tank mixture. Monsanto has not tested all tank mix product
formulations for compatibility or performance other than specifically listed by brand name. Always predetermine the compatibility of tank mixtures by mixing small proportional quantities in advance.
