Roanoke Valley SPCA Position Description POSITION: CLASSIFICATION: SUPERVISOR: SCHEDULE: POSITION LOCATION: Director of Community Engagement Exempt, Full Time, Benefits Eligible Chief Executive Officer Varies Roanoke Valley SPCA POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Community Engagement will have responsibility for the organization’s community engagement functions; including marketing, communications, and community mobilization that leads to helping the organization achieve its outreach and fundraising goals. The position will be responsible for developing the strategic plan around how to accomplish broader community awareness and engagement, as well as execution on those strategies. This position requires previous leadership in community engagement, marketing and communications, strong public speaking and writing skills, and the ability to manage staff and volunteers. The ideal candidate will have the self-assurance and confidence to purposely drive toward results while problem-solving and engaging the commitment of others. The position offers significant opportunities for creativity, entrepreneurism, and social interaction. The majority of the time would be spent out of the office. SPECIFICATIONS Manages the creation of an overall strategic plan for community engagement, including raising awareness about the organization and development of engagement pathways for donors and volunteers. Manages the execution of all community engagement, marketing/communications strategies and special events sponsorship acquisition. Supervises the Development Coordinator, responsible for staff training, support and effectiveness in this area. Identify individuals and corporations for cultivation by the Chief Executive Officer and members of the Board of Directors. Monitors the success of community engagement and marketing strategies and makes course corrections in order to meet the established goals in each area. Provides creative direction to all marketing and communications strategies, with an emphasis on cutting-edge, entrepreneurial approaches including social media. Supervises the development of collateral materials to support the organization’s ability to raise unrestricted funds Cultivates and maintains favorable media relations Represents the Roanoke Valley SPCA in community initiatives and events that support our brand goals/strategies and engage key constituents. Coordinates all fund development special event planning activities. Manages external vendors related to community engagement, marketing, and communications. Oversee the Kind-News program and education outreach programs, including but not limited to Paws to Read and Summer Camp. Ensure that the Roanoke Valley SPCA is represented at the multitude of events, fairs and festivals throughout the Roanoke Valley. Prepare the departmental budget and monitor the financial aspects to ensure that income and expenses are in line with the budget. Work with local Scout groups and youth organizations wanting to volunteer, receive tours, fundraise, etc. for the Roanoke Valley SPCA. Organize, attend and present at business, community, and neighborhood group meetings regarding the organization and its impact on the welfare of animals in our community. Develop public education and information materials, presentations and displays. Coordinate the Open House(s), PetEx, Annual Volunteer Appreciate Event, Holiday Parade Presence(s), Dickens of a Christmas, and the Roanoke Wedding Crawl participation. EDUCATIONAL OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree 7+ years related experience Experience in community engagement and mobilization Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with tight deadlines concurrently Exceptional strategy development, project management and communication skills Solid knowledge of best practices around donor engagement, communications, and volunteer programs Proven experience in managing and motivating staff and volunteers Excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent interpersonal skills Experience managing websites and social media. Demonstrated interest in animal welfare. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds. Inoculations against Tetanus and Rabies are required. ASSESSMENT PERIOD RVSPCA has a 90 day assessment period from the date of hire for employment in any position. This introductory period is the period during which the specifics of the job are learned and either the employee or RVSPCA may end the employment relationship without notice or prejudice.
