The Final Act of Christ’s
Redemption
The Ascension of Our Lord, which
occurred 40 days after Jesus Christ rose
from the dead on Easter, is the final act
of our redemption that Christ began on
Good Friday. On this day, the risen
Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven
The reality of Christ's Ascension is so
important that the creeds (the basic statements of belief) of Christianity all affirm,
in the words of the Apostles' Creed, that
"He ascended into heaven, sits at the
right hand of God the Father almighty;
from thence He shall come to judge the
living and the dead." The denial of the
Ascension is as grave a departure from
Christian teaching as is denial of Christ's
Resurrection.
Christ's bodily Ascension foreshadows
our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the
dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming mankind, Christ not only offered
salvation to our souls, but also began the
restoration of the material world itself to
the glory that God intended before Adam's fall.
The Feast of the Ascension marks the
beginning of the first novena, or nine
days of prayer. Before His Ascension,
Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit
to His apostles. Their prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which began on
Ascension Thursday, ended with the
descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost
Sunday, ten days later. That nine-day
novena to the Holy Spirit continues to
this day in preparation for the Feast of
Pentecost.

Search for a new Youth Minister is completed!
Power Source
For the past couple of months the Youth Minister Search
Committee (joining me on the committee is Fr. Grosch, Jeff
Schulenberg and Denise Fabry) has reviewed résumés of 19
applicants. I am happy to inform you this past week I
signed a contract with Beth Fresenburg. She is very enthusiastic and will be great addition to our parish staff. She is
well qualified and experience for the position. She has some
loose ends to finish with her former employer and will join
us fulltime in a few weeks. Until then she will transition in
getting acquainted and orientated to Sacred Heart. She
wanted me to share the following with you:
Dear Teens and Parishioners,
My name is Beth Fresenburg. I was asked to be part
of your family as the new youth minister! I grew up in
Fenton and moved to St. Peters, MO for high school. I
still currently live in St. Peters, but I am looking forward
to getting to know your parish and your youth ministry
program. I studied at Benedictine College and have been
a Youth Minister in Minnesota and New Mexico prior to
coming to your parish. I can't wait to meet the teens and
see the possibilities of this program. Please pray for me
and the teens as we transition.
Beth Fresenburg
A Question I Have Heard
(…worth repeating)
Q: What is the plan with the four remaining houses in the
area of the future softball and soccer field?
A:
Until recently the remaining 4 houses have been rented.
Three of the houses are vacant and the other one will be
vacated by May 15th. We are in the process of having utilities removed, inspections for asbestos and general preparation for demolition. The demolition of three or four of the
homes will be completed by end of this calendar year. Trees
between homes have been topped and removed. The trunks
will be removed at a later time when the homes are demolished. Some of the work is being concurrent with the grading/paving of the parking lot. The eventual completion of
the fields will require construction of some walls.
Welcome New Parishioners to
Sacred Heart
If you are searching for a place to call “home,” why not
join our Parish Family? Simply complete this form and
return it to Monica in the Parish Office, or call her at 636225-5268.

Ephesians 1:17-23
Nations build up their power through politics, weapons
and wealth. Strong leaders can unite their people to promote a cause. Mighty arsenals can overcome enemies.
Money can buy influence and technology. Nations feel secure when they hold power.
As citizens, we sometimes take false hope in the security
of our nation. It is nearly impossible to guard against every
attack, to control every enemy and to protect our national
treasures. It is tempting to rely on the standards of national
power: politics, weapons and wealth.
The Letter to the Ephesians takes another view of power.
It assumes that all power belongs to God, not to people, and
that God has assigned authority to Christ, “raising him from
the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens.”
God put all things beneath the feet of Christ “and gave him
as head over all things.”
But Jesus is no politician. He owns no weapons. He possesses no earthly wealth. His dominion differs from that of
temporal rulers. Believers of every nation put their trust in
Christ. They follow his teachings. Most importantly, they
believe he is the victor over death. Jesus has conquered
death, the enemy of every human. With Jesus as our head,
we enjoy unparalleled freedom and release from all our
fears.
Those who follow Christ put their trust in other forms of
power—perfect love of God and neighbor.

Life After Loss - South County
A heroin overdose on December 3, 2014 took Cory. Cory had been struggling off
and on with addiction for eight years. The family fought the disease alone and in
silence. When he lost his battle to this disease, it became obvious the silence had
to stop.
Life After Loss, founded by the Vigna family after their daughter Nicky passed
away from an overdose in 2013, opened the door to healing. You are invited to
share your loved one’s story. Lives are forever different after Heroin. By sharing
stories with those who understand, together you can travel the journey of healing.
Meetings are held at the Conference Center of SSM St. Clare Health Center,
1015 Bowles Avenue in Fenton on the first Monday of each month: June 1, July 6,
August 3, September 7, October 5, November 2, and December 7 from 7:00 - 8:30

Meetings are facilitated by Monique M. Waldman, MAPC, who has counseled
parents who have lost children at Heartlinks Grief Center. She created and

necessary tools to increase their quality of life and better understand the path
that lies ahead of them. If you have any questions or would like to register to attend, please contact: Lou Hecht [email protected] 314-943-2364 or Robyn

SACRED HEART SCHOOL
Dear Parishioners,
This is a very busy time of the year here at Sacred Heart
School. We continue to give tours to perspective families
who have heard good things about our school. Teachers
and students are staying focused on ending the year on a
good note. We were able to get our Field Day in on Tuesday
due to rain on our original date. The weather was perfect
and the students, parents, and teachers all had a great time
cheering for their teams. We also had our “Muffins with
Mom” for our Middle School students on Thursday. Here at
school during the month of May, we pray a decade of the
Rosary each morning to start our school day. It is a blessing
to see the entire student body along with the faculty praying together. I especially enjoy seeing the Kindergarten’s
participation during this prayer. Please continue to pray for
our students, faculty and staff during our last month of
school.
If you know anyone who is interested in our Preschool
and Elementary School please have them contact the office.
We are currently adding a 5 day Preschool 4’s program here
at Sacred Heart and we are now accepting registrations.
If you are interested in touring our school, please contact
the office. I would be glad to show you around our school
and all the wonderful things going on at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Again, I would like to thank you for your continued support of Sacred Heart Catholic School. If you
would like to share your time and talent with the school
please contact us either by phone or email.

T
he next on our list of “virgin martyr” saints is St. Lucy. Really, all that is
known for sure about her is that she was martyred in Syracuse around
304 under the Great Persecution of Diocletian. However, our traditions
from the Middle Ages have a lot more to say about her life.
According to these traditions, she was born of a noble family around 283.
Her father was Roman, but he died when Lucy was still only five years old,
leaving her in the care of her Greek mother, Eutychia. Lucy, like many of the
early virgin martyrs, promised herself to Christ at a young age, but her mother had no idea. Imagine: a child not telling her mother about something – I
bet that’s never happened before! The tradition also has it that Eutychia suffered from some form of blood disorder, so without a father to protect the
family, she likely was looking for some security and stability for her family,
which she sought by marrying off her daughter Lucy.
Remember how we mentioned last week that veneration of St. Agatha
quickly spread throughout Sicily and the rest of the Church? Well, even a few
decades later, Eutychia and Lucy travelled to her shrine in Catania to pray
for the saint’s intercession for a cure to Eutychia’s blood disease. St. Agatha
came to Lucy in a dream, and told her that because of Lucy’s faith, her mother would be cured, and that she herself would become the glory of Syracuse,
just as Agatha was for Catania. Lucy was so inspired and thankful that she
chose to distribute her part of her family’s inheritance to the poor.
Now remember that whole thing about being the new St. Agatha for Syracuse? She remembered that Agatha was martyred, right? When her betrothed
saw her giving away her wealth, he assumed that she was giving away money
to be used for her dowry. He reported her to the governor of Syracuse, who
ordered Lucy to offer sacrifice to the emperor’s image – the typical test for
Christians during the Diocletian persecution. When she refused, can you imagine what they did? You guessed it – they tried to drag her off to be defiled
in a brothel.
The soldiers meant to drag her to the brothel behind a team of oxen, but
miraculously, they couldn’t budge her from the spot! They then tried to burn
her at the stake, but she wouldn’t burn! Some traditions say that the soldiers
gouged out her eyes (a tradition often represented in artwork by her holding
a platter of her own eyes!). Ultimately, St. Lucy was put to death by the
sword, and offered the martyr’s crown like her patroness, St. Agatha.
Lucy’s dream was indeed true – her veneration exploded throughout the
Church. Her name appeared in our Eucharistic Prayers by the 6th century, if
not before. Her feast day (Dec. 13) has also been venerated as far away as
England by the 700’s. Even today, her feast is celebrated as a holiday in Italy,
Scandinavia, and elsewhere. In the celebrations, a girl dressed as St. Lucy
enters the party wearing a crown of candles, and presenting bread and
sweets to those present. Her name, “Lucia” comes from the Latin word meaning “light”, so she does indeed represent a light of hope in darkness during
one of the darkest (seasonal) times of the year!

GOOD NEWS
Plenary
Session
of the
Pontifical
Academy
of the Social
Sciences
Upon being
elected two
years ago,
Pope Francis sent an unusual message to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Social Sciences: “I think it would be good
to examine human trafficking and modern slavery. Organ trafficking could be examined in connection with human trafficking. Many thanks, Francis.”
This year, during the plenary session of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, Pope Francis reiterated his concern with
human trafficking, stating: “I have stated several times that
these new forms of slavery – human trafficking, forced labor,
prostitution, organ trade – are very serious crimes, a wound on
the body of contemporary humanity. The whole of society is
called to grow in this awareness, especially with regard to national and international legislation, in order to prosecute the
traffickers and redirect their unjust gains to the rehabilitation of
victims.”
As a result of the Pope’s steadfast desire for the Church to
marshal her resources against this crime, the Pontifical Science
Academies have launched a new website aiming to educate
the public and raise awareness of human trafficking worldwide.
The address of the Vatican’s new anti-human trafficking website is: www.endslavery.va.
