CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
WELCOME
We are thrilled to announce four exciting Q&As for the
summer months: Barry Ackroyd (one of Britain’s top
cinematographers) and cameraman Oliver Driscoll telling
us how they filmed Captain Phillips, writer-director Guy
Myhill with his impressive Norfolk-set debut The Goob, and
actor (and former SWCHS student) Michael Shaeffer with
London Road. There will also be a Q&A with composer,
musician and silent movie guru Neil Brand after the screening
of Alfred Hitchcock’s silent film Blackmail with live orchestral
accompaniment in Saffron Hall. We do hope you can join
us when we bring the red carpet to Saffron Walden.
Please note that matinee screenings are at 4pm for the summer
months (to allow days in the sun, we hope). Unfortunately we
are not able to offer any midweek matinees this summer as
there will be substantial, noisy, building work at SWCHS.
We have several Special Events in this programme
and many more for the Autumn. Check our website
for full details as we can’t squeeze all the listings into this
programme! Details will be coming soon about our
BIG FILM QuIz on Saturday 3 October – so save the date!

CAST Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman, Catherine Keener
SCREEN TEST We are thrilled to re-screen Greengrass’s pulse-pounding thriller to
welcome eminent British cinematographer Barry Ackroyd and first cameraman Oliver
Driscoll to Saffron Screen. This multi-layered dramatisation of the 2009 hijacking of a
US container ship by Somali pirates sets experienced Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks)
against a young fisherman-turned-pirate. The stunning cinematography and rousing

GIRLHOOD (Bande de filles) (15)
Mon 6th 8pm
DIRECTOR Céline Sciamma
CAST Karidja Touré, Assa Sylla, Lindsay Karamoh, Mariétou Touré
SCREEN TEST This triumphant third film from French director Sciamma (Waterlilies,
Tomboy) celebrates the energy and passion of young women and sisterhood. Fed up with
her abusive family situation in a grim Parisian tower block, lack of school prospects and
the “boys’ law” in the neighbourhood, 16-year-old Marieme joins a gang of charismatic
girls with swagger to burn. For better or worse, this empowers her. Smart and defiant,

entertaining post-apocalyptic action adventure which has to be seen on the big screen.
Max is haunted by his past, without purpose until he stumbles across Furiosa (Theron),
fleeing from Immortan Joe after she rescues his quintet of would-be-brides. Operatic in
scope and majestic in visual ecstasy, this heralds Miller’s triumphant return to
spectacular cinema.

fascinating story set in post-war Berlin. A beguiling Hoss plays a Jewish singer and

Sun 19th 8pm
DIRECTOR Amir Amirani
SCREEN TEST On 15th February 2003, 15 million people took to the streets of
over 800 cities around the world, protesting against the fast-approaching war on Iraq.
Director Amirani talks to everyone from Noam Chomsky to Tony Benn to Colin Powell’s
aide who now regrets his complicity in the ‘dodgy dossier’. A fascinating and inspiring
documentary about the birth of mass protest in the digital age, both moving and
important.

THE CONNECTION (La French) (15)
Mon 20th 8pm
DIRECTOR Cédric Jimenez
CAST Jean Dujardin, Gilles Lellouche, Céline Sallette, Mélanie Doutey
SCREEN TEST A Gallic cousin to William Friedkin’s The French Connection based on the
real-life struggle between police and the gangs smuggling heroin into 1970s Marseilles.
This stylish thriller pits Zampa (Lellouche), the seemingly untouchable crime boss, against
the newly arrived magistrate Michel (Dujardin, The Artist). His all-consuming obsession
with bringing his quarry to justice brings Michel’s life tumbling around him. Superb
cinematography and a terrific soundtrack.

MAN UP (15)
Fri 24th & Sat 25th 8pm
DIRECTOR Ben Palmer
CAST Simon Pegg, Lake Bell, Ophelia Lovibond, Rory Kinnear
SCREEN TEST Nancy (Bell), a chronic singleton, meets Jack (Pegg) at Waterloo
Station on a blind date intended for someone else. They hit it off…but then doubts set
in. Bell is gloriously charismatic and funny and the film sparks with the couple’s chemistry
(2015 UK/Fr 88 mins)
and a snappy script. A breezy, honest London-set rom com.
JURASSIC WORLD (12A)
Sat 25th & Sun 26th 4pm
DIRECTOR Colin Trevorrow
CAST Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Bryce Dallas Howard, Judy Greer
SCREEN TEST Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, a new hybrid

escapes from the dinosaur park with disastrous results. Enjoy action, thrills, envelope(2015 USA 124 mins)
pushing special effects and lots and lots of dinosaurs.
THE MISFITS (PG)
Sun 26th 8pm
DIRECTOR John Huston
CAST Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift, Eli Wallach
SCREEN TEST In Reno for a quickie divorce, beautiful but troubled Roslyn Taber meets
three cowboy drifters who are all drawn to her. The men are the last of a vanishing breed,
like the wild horses they are rounding up to sell for dog food. A perceptive elegy for the
Old West: especially poignant because it was the final film appearance of both Gable
(1961 USA 122 mins B&W)
and Monroe.
THE GOOB (18)
Mon 27th 8pm
DIRECTOR Guy Myhill
CAST Liam Walpole, Sienna Guillory, Sean Harris, Marama Corlett
SCREEN TEST Set over a hot summer in rural Norfolk, this coming-of-age drama
is a confident debut for writer-director Myhill. School-leaver Goob is helping in his mum’s
café and harvesting the local pumpkin fields. But tensions simmer with his mother’s
new boyfriend, the aggressive and abusive Gene, and the arrival of transient workers. An
atmospheric film, contrasting the big skies with the claustrophobia of small-town life.

DIRECTOR Abderrahmane Sissako
CAST Ibrahim Ahmed, Abel Jafri, Toulou Kiki, Layla Walet Mohamed
SCREEN TEST Set in the early days of the jihadist takeover of northern Mali in 2012,
with the multicultural city of Timbuktu invaded by militant Islamists, this stunningly shot
film is less interested in violence than in the struggle to rise above it. The local imam
calmly argues against the jihadists’ narrow, ultra-orthodox dogma, but he has little
influence over these religious intruders. A beautiful, tragic portrait of a community
under siege.

inhabitants of London Road, where the women worked, set to an innovative and often
lighthearted score, we learn how ordinary people came together to cope with the media
circus that accompanied these events.

SCREEN TEST A sleeper train rockets through the night; among its passengers might
be a murderer. Director Kawalerowicz, drawing on his experience of frequent trips to the
Baltic to woo his now leading lady Winnicka, uses this set-up to create an intense pressure
cooker of tension. Building to a chilling climax, this is an impressive film which examines
painful national memories in the guise of a Hitchcockian thriller.

CAST Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Hattie Morahan, Roger Allam
SCREEN TEST McKellen is superb as a 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes in this new twist
on the world’s most famous detective. Retired to the south coast, his intellect and memory
have been blunted and he has bitter regrets over events in a case long ago (which we see
in flashback). Handsomely shot, this is a gently comic, wise and reflective story.

promise to watch over Laura’s husband and newborn baby. When she visits the grieving
widower, she is shocked to find him dressed in his dead wife’s clothes. A dark comedy

it is to be wholly immersed in an enchanted world. It tells the story of Saoirse, the last
seal-child or ‘selkie’, who goes on an epic journey with her brother in order to save the

storytelling.

Sun 23rd 8pm
DIRECTOR John Maclean
CAST Michael Fassbender, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ben Mendelsohn, Caren Pistorius
SCREEN TEST In this off-kilter revisionist western, red in tooth and claw and full of
gallows humour, a woefully unprepared 16-year-old lad from Scotland goes in search of
his sweetheart across 1880s Colorado. Fassbender’s bounty hunter offers to help but is

THE SALT OF THE EARTH (12A)
Mon 24th 8pm
DIRECTORS Wim Wenders, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado
SCREEN TEST For over 40 years, Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado has
worked in some of the world’s most hostile and dangerous places. His monumental black
and white images are so aesthetically accomplished that they confuse our notion
of beauty, finding dignity in the most wretched of subjects. Wenders and Salgado’s son
tell the life story of this articulate, thoughtful man who has now returned to his family
farm and is helping restore the rainforest. A memorable documentary.

THE ECSTASY OF WILKO JOHNSON (15 tbc) Tues 25th 8pm
DIRECTOR Julien Temple
SCREEN TEST This inventive and uplifting documentary follows Johnson, formerly
guitarist in Dr Feelgood, after he was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer.
Given months to live, he chose touring above chemotherapy. The film is full of
literary, filmic and visual allusions and Johnson is a funny, sharp, literate and honest
subject, mostly interviewed in his beloved Canvey Island. A final twist brings him to
Addenbrooke’s for a potentially life-saving operation.
