a message from the premier
Food and wine is central to the South Australian way of life, and our State produces some of
the best food and wine in the world.
We make the most of our clean water, air and soil. Our practices are sustainable, and our
food is produced, with expertise and passion, to the finest quality.
The South Australian Government is determined to protect, develop and share these qualities.
By focusing on one of our economic priorities – Premium food and wine produced in our
clean environment and exported to the world – we recognise the significant role South
Australia’s food and wine exports play in the State’s economy and the major opportunities
for growth locally, nationally and internationally. We are also continuing to build on South
Australia’s reputation for quality food and wine that is sustainably produced and processed at
the highest standards.
Our thriving food and wine industry contributed $17.1 billion to our State’s economy in
2013-14, with agribusiness accounting for one in five South Australian jobs. In particular,
food and beverage manufacturing sales (excluding wine) exceeded $8.3 billion and provided
more than 21,000 jobs. Food and beverage manufacturing continues to experience growth,
as it has for many years, and is now the largest manufacturing sector in the State.
Ultimately, our goal is to further enhance the position and profile of South Australian
premium food and wine so that it is even more visible and accessible to buyers worldwide.
By working together, government and industry can ensure the vital and dynamic South
Australian food industry is prominent in the eyes of buyers worldwide, particularly in
markets in mainland China, Hong Kong and Japan.
I encourage all businesses involved in our State’s food industry to read this booklet and enter
the 2015 South Australian Food Industry Awards Program.
By doing so, you will help ensure an even stronger connection between leading food
businesses and consumers, and you will help recognise and reward the outstanding
achievements of one of South Australia’s most important industries.

independent judging panels
An independent application and judging process is in place for the South Australian Food
Industry Awards Program to retain credibility, independence and quality of the process for
the South Australian food industry, and Food South Australia will not be involved in the
judging.
Each Award category comprises an individual judging panel with two representatives
appointed from industry and government and an independent chair is appointed for
each panel. All judges are selected for their knowledge and experience and also for their
willingness to commit their time to the South Australian Food Industry Awards Program.
Written submissions and interviews are scored using a points system to ensure the highest
quality, credibility and a fair outcome.
All applications will be initially assessed based on the written component of their
application. Applicants who are shortlisted will be judged on both the written submission
(25% of total score) and interview/site visit (75% of total score).
Judges are looking for financially sound businesses, demonstrating professionalism, passion
and ongoing commitment to the State’s food industry. These businesses set the benchmark
for South Australia.
All applications received are treated as strictly confidential, and the selection of finalists and
winners in each category by the judging panel is final.
