Father Ryan Mann
"My
only wisdom is
that deep within your
heart is the desire to
do something great
with your life, to
become excellent; that
desire is from Christ; He
alone can show you the
way to achieving this
goal. Trust Him, He is
REAL!" These are the
words of wisdom given
by one of St. Charles'
newest priests, Fr. Ryan
Mann.
Why did Father Ryan
decide to
become a priest?
"Well, I did not grow up
in a very Catholic or
religious home.
However, my
grandparents were very
inspiring people and
loved Jesus and the
Church. But it wasn't
until I was 19 that I first
considered
priesthood and it
was due to Father
Damian Ference
asking me if I
wanted to be a priest. I

Young Rembrandts
Young Rembrandts
is a company that brings
the art of drawing to Saint

kindergarten through
eighth grade students learn
about art and how to
draw. The presenter and

Rembrandt was a
great painter from the

the seventeen century.
You can see one of his

During the kids' time

they learn to draw.
The class is a lot of fun,
and you get to learn
about art!

Friends of El Salvador
Many people in
El Salvador are very poor.
It is exceptionally difficult
for people/parents to earn
enough money to support
their families. The people
in El Salvador need clothing and food. For the kids
in El Salvador, their gym
uniform is their protection.
If they do not wear their
gym uniform while outside,
gangs will try to get them
to join their gang. Many
kids only have one school
uniform to last the whole
year. They have to wash
their clothes in a river,
which isn't very sanitary.
They also only have one
pair of shoes to last the
whole year. Students at
SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO SCHOOL
Saint Charles received a
bag to put any loose change
to donate to El Salvador.
Please help raise money for
the children in El Salvador.

St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving Event
“We make a

We make a
life by what
On Friday, March 13,
Saint Charles
participated in the
St.Baldrick's head
shaving event. We
raised almost
$25,000 for the fight
against cancer. There
were many
important people
participating this
year, including Father
Terry, Father Ed,
Parma councilman
Mark Casselberry,
and Anthony's
brother, Nick Kashi.
Also, girls, this
wasn’t just for the
guys! There were
several brave females
who shaved off their
locks: Amelia
Greiner, Emily Jung,
Meghan Gaughan,
Mrs. Updegrove, and
this reporter. Mrs.
Kwiatkowski wasn’t
planning on it, but in
the heat of the moment she challenged
the crowd to raise
$500 and she, too,
would shave her
head. Well, the
audience responded,
raising almost $1,500
in fifteen minutes!
Tears of joy ran
down her face as
her head was
shaved. You can be a
part of this great
cause, too. You can
be brave and shave

Robotics Club
The Robotics Club is a club
for interested 7th and 8th
graders who want to learn all
about programming and robotic design. They meet every
other Wednesday for one
hour. Right now, they are
learning about how to program a robot to follow lines
on paper, how to stop at
obstacles and how to respond
to sound. They are also learning how to fix a
problem if one ever happens.
Learning how to program and
fix problems in the robot will
be an important skill as you
enter into high school, because
it teaches you how to think
logically and how to break
problems into steps. Any interested 6th and 7th graders
are able to join next year, and
can talk to Mr. McKay about
any questions they may have.

Classroom of Champions
The Classroom of Champions competition was held on Wednesday, March 25, at Saint Edward
High School. The Saint Charles team of Ali Stenger, Katie Sutton, Zachary Milko, and alternates
Ethan Kinley, Kelly Boddy and Michael Dontenville, played against St. Francis of Assisi and St.
Raphael. We came in second place, with 220 points. Thanks to all of the team’s hard work and
dedication-good luck next year! -Ali Stenger

Pre-School is Cool
Preschool has been
doing a lot lately! They
are doing science

freezing, and melting.
How fun does that
sound? Preschool is
also practicing phone
numbers and how to

on a balance beam.
The kids are continuing
to
practice
numbers and letters,
and will soon start to

Lastly, they just

The First Grade Story
“When you
learn, teach

get, give.”
- Maya

In
reading , the first graders
are about to read a story
on animals in the forest.
They are also practicing
the long U sound. In
spelling, they are also
practicing long U and
short U words. Did you
know that the first graders
are in love with reading?
More than half of the
students in the class have
reached their AR goals!
They are always down at
the library getting new
books. In math, they are
adding and subtracting
with bigger numbers! In
science class, they are
now learning about
different animals and
how they relate to one
other, and how to group
them. In social studies,
they are learning about
the United States
presidents and are
comparing them to each
other. The first grade class
is planning a field trip to the
Natural History Museum.
When they go, they will
learn about living animals
and more. The first grade
also raised $50 with the
Valentine's delivery! They
are using the money in a
very thoughtful and
generous way: they donated
all the proceeds to the Saint
Baldrick's Foundation.

Hello, Second Grade!
The second graders have been
having a blast lately learning how
to write in cursive. They are also
having fun in religion, studying the
parts of the Mass, and preparing
themselves for First Holy
Communion. The second graders
are learning a lot in English, such
as possessive nouns, verbs, verb tenses,
proofreading and rough drafting. In
math, they are learning how to subtract
when regrouping. They are talking
about land forms in social studies. They
are also learning about a plant’s life
cycle in science class. For reading class,

In the 6th grade, they are doing

readers with the highest amount of
AR points are: Allie Pierce, Kate

6th graders also just finished
learning about text structure in
ELA and are now moving on to
figurative language. They are using a
new application on the iPads called “Write 2
Learn,” which is an application used to improve writing skills and get feedback on
your work. In reading, they are about to
start the book Number The Stars by Louis
Lowry. They are now learning about the
Ten Commandments in religion and in social
studies. In math, the 6th grade is about to
start a chapter on ratios and proportions.
They are studying DNA, atoms, molecules, and particles in science. In addition, in health, they are learning about
nutrition, and they are also
having fun playing basketball in gym.

spelling and writing letters. Through reading
simple books, they have
traveled the world and
become fluent in reading.
Science class has been

insects and spiders. In
social studies, they are

even learned a song to
remember the continents.
For Lent, they had a prayer

EIGHTH GRADE WORKING HARD
Things are going well in 8th grade! The 8th graders are
preparing for their Confirmation in April, and have just
begun drawing their Confirmation Saints in art class. In
English, they are doing a project in preparation for
reading The Giver by Lois Lowry in which they create
their own Utopia. In science, they are learning all
about volcanos and how they form and work. In social
studies, they are studying the three branches of government and how their roles fit in with the constitution. Finally, in math, 8th graders have just started
geometry; they are learning about how the sides and
angles of shapes all correspond to each other. All in all,
the 8th grade is doing well!
