This weekend all Catholic Churches in the United States will be taking up a special collection for the
Catholic
Communication Campaign (CCC). This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic
social media activities and enriches our faith through podcasts, television, radio, and print media.
The collection for communications in the Catholic Church is not only an opportunity to help the universal
Church in all the projects that she has in the evangelization in the digital world, the press, radio and
television, it is also a huge opportunity for us to reflect on what all of this means today and how we use
them.
We are very fortunate and blessed to live in a world full of so much media. It is a gift from God that man
is able to develop all of these different ways to communicate with others allowing us to share our feelings
and knowledge about different topics. This is truly a blessing from God and we should use these
blessings by evangelizing and proclaiming the Kingdom of God, so that others too will know and love
Jesus Christ.
We must also be aware and careful that sometimes the media can be a bad thing, especially if we do not
use it the right way, it can become a big problem. One of the most serious challenges of using media is
the individualization of human beings. In today’s world everything is on a smartphone. While people are
using their smartphones, they do not need interaction. We see this frequently in restaurants, families go
out to eat together but do not talk, everyone is texting or surfing the Internet on their personal
smartphones.
Every year the Pope writes a message for the World Day of Catholic Communications. This year, Pope
Francis says: “We will employ technology wisely, rather than letting ourselves be dominated by it. Here
too, parents are the primary educators, but they cannot be left to their own devices. The Christian
community is called to help them in teaching children how to live in a media environment in a way
consonant with the dignity of the human person and service of the common good”.
We need to use the different media and communications technology we have at our disposal as gifts
from God. We cannot allow the media to control us, to keep us from interacting with people or becoming
addicted. This is a reality today, there are people who are addicted to the internet, electronic games and
pornography. It is sad, but the reality is that the vast majority of those who are addicted are children and
young adults, who have been exposed to the inappropriate use of the media and technology.
“I fear the day that technology exceeded our humanity. The world will have a generation of idiots.” This
has become a very famous sentence said by Albert Einstein.
Let us enjoy the blessings of communications and technology resources that we have and use them
responsibly, they are gifts from God. When technology moves us away from God this is a clear signal
that it is being misused. Let us be aware!!!
May God Bless you today and Always.
