June 7, 2015 www.saintjosephplaincity.com Page 4 Saint of the Week: Saint Ephrem of Syria Died: June 9, 373 Born: 306 Memorial: June 9 Canonized: Unknown It is believed that Ephrem was the son of a pagan priest. At age 18, he was brought to the faith by Saint James of Nisibis. He developed a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a young man, Ephrem helped to evangelize Nisibis, Mesopotamia. He may have also attended the Council of Nicaea in 325. In 363, Nisibis was ceded to Persia and a great persecution of Christians began. Ephrem led an exodus of the faithful to Edessa. There he wrote many homilies, hymns and poetry and helped introduce the use of hymns in public worship. He fought Gnosticism and Arianism through his writings. He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1920. Learn more: http://catholicsaints.info/saint-ephrem-of-syria/ Celebrate!!! The Fr. Thomas J.
