Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) Each of the readings this weekend, Exodus, Hebrews, and Mark’s Gospel uses the word covenant – promise. Jesus’ promise to be with us always is fulfilled in the Eucharist. At the Passover meal, Jesus took the bread; blessed it, broke it, gave it to his disciples, and He gave it to us. We are blessed to eat the Bread of Life when we gather for Mass as a faithful, faith-filled community, but Eucharist doesn’t end at the closing hymn. We are sent forth to spread the Good News: Go! The Feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ), also known as Corpus Domini, is a Latin Rite liturgical solemnity celebrating the tradition and belief in the body and blood of Jesus Christ and his Real Presence in the Eucharist. It emphasizes the joy of the institution of the Eucharist, which was observed on Holy Thursday, in the somber atmosphere of the nearness of Good Friday. In the present Roman Missal, the feast is designated the solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The feast is liturgically celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday or, “where the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is not a holy day of obligation, it is assigned to the Sunday after the Most Holy Trinity as its proper day.” At the end of Holy Mass, there is often a procession of the Blessed Sacrament, generally displayed in a monstrance. The procession is followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. A notable Eucharistic procession is that presided over by the Pope each year in Rome, where it begins at the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran and makes its way to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where it concludes with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus in Boston Young Adult Event – All Young Adults and College Students are invited to join us on Friday, June 26th @ 7:30pm for our monthly “Jesus in Boston” event. We will be at St. Leonard’s Parish in the North End for Eucharistic Adoration followed by Holy Mass and then a social gathering afterwards. It’s a great way to meet new people and strengthen your interior life. For more information please email Mike Drahos at [email protected]. Pastoral Planning Father’s Day Envelopes are at the entrance of the churches. Please return them in the collection over the next two weeks. The names of your Fathers, living and deceased, will be placed on the altar during the remainder of June, and they will be remembered in all the Masses. When a father gives to his son, both laugh; when a son gives to his father, both cry. – William Shakespeare Schedule of Prayer Meetings in Italian Calendar of upcoming meetings: June 18 The meetings will be held at 8:30pm in the Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall. He asked the preacher if he could have a funeral service for his much loved pet, but the preacher explained that they didn't do services like that for animals. Paddy asked who would and the preacher suggested that the Baptist church up the road would probably give the dog a funeral service. Paddy asked, “Preacher, do you think $5,000 would be enough payment for the dog’s funeral?” The preacher relied, “Dearest Paddy, why didn’t you tell me that your dog was a Catholic?” Food for Thought – C.S. Lewis “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” “The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.” Greater Boston’s Affordable Boston Harborside Home of Joseph A.
