SAINT MARGARET SCHOOL NEWS
April 15, 2015
Dear Parishioners,
Most of this week and the next will be consumed with state
testing in grades three through eight. So much has been written
and discussed about the state assessments and the impact that
they are having on our children and their teachers. All I will say
at this point is that our teachers at St. Margaret School have
done their utmost to prepare their students for these exams. I
am very proud of the teachers who have spent countless
mornings before the opening of the school day to offer
assistance to their students.
All of this brings to mind a conversation I had recently with a
retired public school teacher named Tony from Mahopac whose
two children currently teach in public schools. He told me that
in the schools where his children work, teacher unions are
demanding extra compensation for morning or afternoon
Common Core tutorial classes. I told Tony what my teachers
have been doing and how proud I am of them. So often, parents
do not realize how lucky they are when their child has a teacher
who is willing to go the extra mile without the promise of a
financial reward. As the saying goes: “Their reward will be in
heaven.” Well, heaven must be filled with lots and lots of
Catholic school teachers whose earthly devotion to their
students have earned them a lofty place above the clouds.
Carolyn M. Slattery,
Principal

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the
Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
The world was a playground for Mickey,
a naive Irish American kid bored with
his life. His father served in World War
II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam;
now it was his turn. His 365 days in
Vietnam builds in torment until an
attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia.
Wounded, his friend captured, he
becomes a tormented survivor knowing
he is always just a heartbeat from death.
