Corry, Principal May 29, 2015 Continued Principal News… Registration Once again I must bring up the subject of registering your child for this coming 2015-2016 school year. Many parents have still not registered their child yet, but have told either their teacher or Mrs. Pompetti their child will definitely be returning. Young Pre-K has been and continues to be Wednesday, June 17, 9am a faithful and strong Kindergarten supporter of St. Paul School Thursday, June 18, 9am since his arrival in February. Home & School Association As the school year comes to a close quickly, I want to say THANK YOU! to the individuals who volunteered and helped out with all of the events the Home and School Association organized throughout the year! As some of you already know, this is my last year as President of the Home and School Association. I will be passing the baton on to Claire Baggessen who I know will bring a fresh approach and new ideas to this organization! I want to appeal to the families of the younger students to please get involved next year! You now have a year or two of experience with the events we organize for the benefit of the school and the kids. Please consider how you can help next year. The events that the HSA organizes are put together by a very small group of people who all have full time jobs. If more people get involved, our events will be better and we can put St. Paul School on the map, which will only strengthen our school and our community! As I’ve said before, these few years in elementary school are a small window of time! Get involved now! I also want to congratulate the eighth graders for their achievements and wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors! Have a great summer! Suzanne O’Donoghue ST.PAUL SCHOOL NEWS Shopping for souvenir berets! Pre-K News May was blooming with learning. We learned about flowers and bugs. We watched all of our plants grow so high and then we were excited to take our vacation! Bonjour from Paris! The children did very well on the flight to France; they went through security and had their tickets and passports checked. When we arrived in France, we visited the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and the Gardens and walked through the streets of Paris. We also got to participate in the waiter’s race on Bastille Day, make croissants at the local café and ride in the Tour de France. The children enjoyed learning about Madeline and many other stories that were set in France. We were sad to leave, but we needed to get back so we could start practicing for our celebration. We are looking forward to June and all of the excitement that comes with the end of another school year. Remember that our celebration is on th Wednesday, June 17 at 9:00 a.m. This is the last day of school for our students. The children will be dismissed at the conclusion of the program. Bonjour from the gardens of France! K A & B News May has flown by, but has been a productive and exciting month in Kindergarten! We began the month by tracking the growth of our chicks inside their eggs. On May 20th, we welcomed 15 adorable chicks into our classrooms! We loved watching them grow and we look forward to visiting them at Casey Farm on Monday! Our annual Walk-a-Thon was a huge success this year! Thank you for all of your donations and for those who walked with us! Our students had a blast! We were extremely proud of all our wonderful singers and dancers at the Spring Concert. Everyone did a fabulous job! We began practicing for our Graduation Ceremony this month, which will be held on Thursday, June 18th. Our students can't wait to share their special presentation! Next week we will be finishing up our reading/phonics programthis will be the final week of homework! In Math, we are wrapping up our unit on measurement. In June, we look forward to our trip to Casey Farm, our annual first floor Field Day, and Graduation day! SAINT PAUL SCHOOL NEWS Grade 1 News Last week we let our Painted Lady butterflies go! The class seemed to really enjoy watching our caterpillars grow and change and it was good a learning experience for all. This week we began our ocean unit and next week we will begin learning some fun facts about Rhode Island. We might also sample some favorite RI foods like Del’s lemonade, pizza strips and coffee milk. As you know, we are finishing up our Reading Street Series for this school year with a biography of Ben Franklin when he was ten years old. We'll follow this up by making our own kites next week. Since this was such a busy week, we will move our reading and spelling tests to next Tuesday. After that we will complete the Unit 5 Benchmark Test - the last one of the school year! In Math, we've been working on money and time. We will also begin working on measurement and two digit addition and subtraction in the weeks ahead. Don't forget to continue practicing addition and subtraction facts with your child this summer and keep reading too! And finally, since this may be our last newsletter for this school year, I want to thank you for all your help and cooperation throughout the year. Your first graders have grown and matured so much this year and I'm very proud of them as I get ready to send them off to second grade. It was my pleasure to be your child's first grade teacher. Grade 2 News Second grade has worked very hard this year and I am so pleased with their participation and involvement! You should be very proud of them! In Reading, we are finishing Unit 6 and reviewing grammar skills. In Writing, we are working on our persuasive letters to Mrs. Freitas. The students will need to convince Mrs. Freitas that they are indeed ready for third grade. We are planning a special Flag Day celebration in our classroom for Friday, June 12th. The students will be asked to wear their red, white, and blue that day. We will also have activities and a special treat! In Math, we will be finishing up our review on Place Value and Adding/Subtracting Three Digit Numbers. I know my class is looking forward to hosting the last school liturgy on Friday, June 5th at 9am. Please note that all are welcome to attend. The class has been working hard preparing for this special event. In the next few weeks, our class will be visiting the William Hall Library for a special read aloud and going to the Rhodes Playground. During the summer, please have your child review their reading and math skills. It will be helpful in their transition to third grade. PAUL SCHOOL NEWS Grade 3 News On this coming Tuesday, we will take our test 18 on Reconciliation. Next, we will move on to the other sacrament of healing the Anointing of the Sick. We are continuing our study of Genesis in the Bible, we are currently wandering in the wilderness with Moses and the Israelites. We will complete our reading program next week with our unit 6 test. Look for the results in your child's work folder. Over the summer, in helping your child with summer reading, it would be advantageous to refer to the skills help letter you received after the unit 1 test. If you need a second copy, please let me know. We completed our unit 8 vocabulary and spelling test this week, so it is on to unit 9. We also have finished our trip to ancient Egypt and are moving on to more modern times with the American Revolution. We are about half way through "The Egyptian Box" by Jane Louise Curry, so we will probably be able to fit in one more story in literature. We will continue to practice multiplication, division and word problems and will soon be wrapping up our study of geometry. When we do, we'll do a little work with fractions. In science we are learning about position, motion and speed. Some of it will be book work, but we will also be doing some experiments. As you can see our last three weeks of school will be very busy and productive. Thank you for your support this past school year and have a great summer! We will be planting our green bean seeds towards the end of this week. We do so in a clear plastic cup so we can observe the seeds' germination. In math, we continue to practice our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as congruent figures and motion. I'm pleased to report that the third graders are finally getting the hang of solving word problems! Grade 4 News I truly can't believe that June is upon us! After a wonderful walkathon and spring concert we have now made our way to Sturbridge Village! We are so excited for our day trip and can't wait to share with you all of the wonderful things we do on Friday. We are really working on reviewing our writing and grammar skills. We are also completing our fourth Harry Potter book, The Goblet of Fire. My class adores this series especially my voices that go along with each character.;) In social studies, we are focusing on the Midwest. We've just begun a new chapter discussing the landforms, plant, and animal life. They really enjoy learning about the different regions in the United States. I can't wait to continue our journey across the U.S. in Grade 5! ST. PAUL SCHOOL NEWS Grade 5 News After two years with your wonderful children, it is hard to believe we only have a few weeks of school left to learn, laugh and grow together. Thank you for another great year! After our amazing visit to Sturbridge Village today, we will conclude our history units on the American Revolution before the end of the year. Please be on the look out for the books we created about the American Revolution. The students did a great job with them. plan accordingly. Please have them confirm with me by June 1st. Middle School News During these final weeks, we will finish our study of the Seven Sacraments with learning about the sacraments in service to others, matrimony and holy orders. Mathematics will take us to geometry and angles, as well as a review of the many concepts we have learned this academic year. We will wrap up our study of plant life as we "grade" our abilities to keep our group plants alive. Graduation News As the 2014-15 academic year draws to a close, the eighth grade class will be occupied by preparing for final exams, a field trip, and graduation. Finals will begin on Wednesday, June 3rd continue until Monday, June 8th. When they are not testing they will be preparing for Graduation which will take place June 11th, I would ask that if the $50.00 Graduation fee has not been paid that it be paid by June 1st. The fee covers the cost of the cap & gown, diploma, and incidentals. I have asked the class to confirm their attendance at the post graduation gathering in the auditorium so the HSA can Permutations and Combinations are grist for the sixth grade Math class with Prediction and Probability on the horizon. These concepts are exercises in logical thinking that help a student take a structured approach in reasoning. The seventh grade Math class is forging ahead preparing for a Chapter test and then into an exploration of Ratio and Proportion. Lastly, the eighth grade class is being introduced to Polynomials, their degrees, and their simplification leading to preparation for their Final. ST. PAUL SCHOOL NEWS The sixth grade class has a chapter test this week and then to preparing for their Final in Religion. The seventh grade Religion class is beginning a chapter addressing a Christian's responsibility to work for justice and peace. The class has already reached the conclusion that if we lived the teachings of Jesus there would be peace in our world. The eighth grade class is preparing for testing on a chapter that builds on the seventh grade work. It focuses on the need to make Jesus the center of our lives with the expressed goal of achieving the Mission of Jesus through His Church. Grade 6 Social Studies Students are concluding a unit of study on Ancient Greece. They are learning about Greek myths, Greece's geography, history and famous political philosophers. A special focus is placed on the early Greek republic and the traits of democracy. Next up is a unit on Ancient Rome. Final exam will be the week of June 15th. Grade 7 Social Studies. Students have begun a unit of study on the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Our learning goals focus on the principles of a Constitutional Democracy and students will learn through an examination of solutions reached by our Founding Fathers. We will end our year with an examination of the Louisiana Purchase and the final exam will take place the week of June 15th. Grade 8 Social StudiesCongratulations to the 8th grade! We have concluded our time together with a study of WWII and a quick look at the Cold War. I believe they are all well prepared for their high school Social Studies classes. Final Exam is Monday, June 8th. Good Luck! Grade 6 Skills- Students are working on writing conventions and are currently studying unit 14 in Vocab. Final exam will be the week of June 15th. Grade 7 Vocabulary: Currently studying unit 12. Creative Writing: Students have completed their writing portfolios and they will be available for review in early June. Grade 8 Vocabulary: Final exam will take place on June 5th. Students have completed a rigorous writing and vocabulary curriculum and likewise, I believe all students should ST. PAUL SCHOOL NEWS be ready to meet the demands of their high school English classes. Congratulations! In seventh grade science we recently began a new chapter on Nonrenewable Energy. In sixth grade literature we are continuing to read “The Maze Runner”, by James Dashner. In sixth grade science the students finished their chapter on Interactions of Living Things, and we began Cycles in Nature. We will soon begin a mini unit on Earth Processes with the Kites Kit. We will be learning about tectonic plates along with Earth’s interior. In eighth grade science the students have just begun the egg project. We will finish the week by determining if the students have fashioned a container which can stand the two story drop from the fire escape, by keeping little Eggbert intact. Unfortunately last year not all of the progeny survived the drop, I am hoping for larger survival rate this year. I letter was sent home explaining the project criteria. In seventh grade literature we finished “My Brother Sam is Dead”, by James Collier and Christopher Collier. We will begin working on reading comprehension skills utilizing various short stories. In eighth grade literature, we are finishing, “My Thirteenth Winter, a Memoir” by Samantha Abeel.
