t that time, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.” Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also, because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus. The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel!” Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it, as it is written: “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt.” His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. People: Glory to Thee, O Lord, glory to Thee! FEAST DAY OF THE ANNUNCIATION ON HOLY TUESDAY, APRIL 7 In The Prologue, Saint Nikolai wrote: “The history of the New Testament was opened by the words of the Archangel Gabriel: ‘Rejoice, thou that art highly favored.’ This shows that the New Testament signified joy to mankind and to all created things. Therefore, the Annunciation is considered not only a great feast but also a joyful feast.” THE SACRAMENT OF UNCTION FOR THE SICK & SUFFERING APRIL 8, 7:00 P.M. The express purpose of the sacrament of holy unction is healing and forgiveness. Since it is not always the will of God that there should be physical healing, the prayer of Christ that God's will be done always remains as the proper context of the sacrament. In addition, it is the clear intention of the sacrament that through the anointing of the sick body the sufferings of the person should be sanctified and united to the sufferings of Christ. In this way, the wounds of the flesh are consecrated, and strength is given that the suffering of the diseased person may not be unto the death of his soul, but for eternal salvation in the resurrection and life of the Kingdom of God. BLESSING OF THE BRANCHES ON PALM SUNDAY Please take a palm and willow branch as you enter the church this morning. Following the Prayer before the Ambo at the conclusion of the Liturgy, the Prayer at the Blessing of the Branches will take place and everyone should hold their branches high so they receive sprinkling with Holy water. As the prayer indicates, it is a blessing of the palms and especially a blessing upon us who, in remembrance of the New Testament event, hold the palms in our hands as symbols of our faith that Jesus of Nazareth is the prophesied descendant of David called to be the Messianic King and Savior to ultimately deliver God’s people and eternally rule with righteousness and peace: “His seed shall remain forever and his throne as the sun before Me” (Psalm 88: 37). Prayer at the Blessing of the Branches O Lord our God, who sits upon the Cherubim, You have reaffirmed Your power by sending Your Only‐begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to save the world through His cross, burial and resurrection. When He came into Jerusalem to suffer His voluntary passion, the people that sat in darkness and in the shadow of death took boughs of trees and branches of palms and willows as signs of victory, thus foretelling His resurrection. Do You, Yourself, O Master, keep and preserve us who, in imitation of them, carry palms and branches in our hands. As we join the crowds and the children who sang ‘Hosanna’ to You, may we, with hymns and spiritual songs, attain the life‐giving resurrection of the third day.
