Rome
For much of its history Rome has been at the centre
of world events, first, as caput mundi (capital of the
world), the fearsome hub of the Roman Empire. But
there’s more to Rome than history, a trip to Rome is
as much about lapping up the lifestyle as it is gorging
on art and historic sights. And there’s no betterway
of getting into the local spirit of things than by eating
and drinking well. Food and wine are central to
Roman social life and thehundreds of pizzerias,
trattorias, restaurants and gelaterie that crowd the
city centre do as much business catering to locals as
to tourists and out-of-towners.

Grand
Canyon
No matter how much you read about the Grand Canyon
or how many photographs you’ve seen, nothing really
prepares you for the sight of it. One of the world’s seven
natural wonders, it’s so startlingly familiar and iconic
you can’t take your eyes off it. At about two billion years
old – half of Earth’s total life span it is one of the most
popular places to visit with with nearly 5 million people
going each year.
Grand Canyon West is famous for its Skywalk, the
controversial glass bridge jutting out over the rim that
debuted in 2007.

LakeGarda
Lake Garda is located in the north-east of Italy, dividing
the regions of Lombardy, the Veneto and Trentino
Alto-Adige. The large lake is long and slim, stretching
from north to south. The southern lakeshore is low,
rolling land and fairly built-up. In contrast, the dramatic
fjord-like northern end is surrounded by towering
mountains and cliffs.
Poets and politicians, divas and dictators, they’ve all
been drawn to captivating Lake Garda. In fact, 7% of
all tourists to Italy head for the lake’s shores, taking to
its wind-ruffled waters in the north and village and
vineyard hopping in the south.
The beautiful lakeside towns around Lake Garda have
charmed foreign visitors for centuries. Even for the
ancient Romans, the area was a luxury summer
destination.

China
Let’s face it: the world’s oldest continuous civilisation
is bound to pull an artefact or two out of its hat. With
tumble-down chunks of the Great Wall, mist-wreathed,
temple-topped mountains, quaint villages, water towns
and sublime Buddhist cave statues, China insists on a
few requirements: a well-made pair of travelling shoes
and a strong stomach for long-distance wayfaring..
Treat yourself by trading your meagre local Chinatown
menu for the lavish Middle Kingdom cookbook. Wolf
down Peking duck, size up a sizzling lamb kebab in
Kāifēng or gobble down a bowl of Lánzhōu noodles on
the Silk Road. Spicy Húnán or Sìchuān dishes really raise
the temperature. Culinary exploration is possibly the
most enticing aspect of Middle Kingdom travel:
you’ll return with stimulated taste buds and much
cherished gastronomic memories.
9
Sydney
Defined just as much by its rugged coast as its exquisite
harbour. Jump on a ferry and Sydney’s your oyster, the
harbour prises the city’s two halves far enough apart to
reveal an abundance of pearls. On the coast, Australia
ends abruptly in sheer walls of sandstone punctuated
by arcs of golden sand. In summer they’re covered with
people making the most of a climate that encourages
outdoor socialising, exercising and fun.
After a lazy Saturday at the beach, urbane Sydneysiders
have a disco nap, hit the showers and head out again.
There’s always a new restaurant to try, undercover bar
to hunt down, hip band to check out, sports team to
shout at, show to see or crazy party to attend. The city’s
pretensions to glamour are well balanced by a
casualness that means a cool T-shirt and a tidy pair
of jeans will get you in most places. But if you want to
dress up and show off, there’s plenty of opportunity for
that among the sparkling lights of the harbour.
10
Venice
Although there are days when tourists outnumber
locals by two to one, Venice never loses its capacity
to enchant.
Summer brings some of the most daunting crowds, but
there’s a reason why they come: the sheer loveliness of
an exquisite city that seems miraculously built on
water. It’s important to remember that, even at peak
visitor times, you are never more than a bridge and an
alley away from a more secluded city, full of secret
campi (squares), handsome Gothic palazzi and lively
neighbourhood wine bars.
In any season, Venice’s churches and museums offer
antique glories aplenty, but there is also a vibrant
contemporary art scene, even away from the
Art Biennale.
