It is with great pleasure
that we present the
results of the 18th Laurie
Thomas New Zealand
Landscape Salon 2014,
along with a selection of
successful images.
This salon honours the
memory of the late Laurie
Thomas HonFPSNZ,
APSA, a fine landscape
slide photographer
and member of
the Christchurch
Photographic Society.
Laurie was also one
of the pioneers of the
Photographic Society of
New Zealand.
This year the salon
received 608 entries with
184 images receiving an
award.
Special thanks go to
Ann Bastion APSNZ,
FiAP for creating the
CD presentation, Dave
Slaten as webmaster
and to Belinda Carter
for creating this year’s
catalogue. Special thanks
also go to this year’s
panel of judges convened
by Bob McCree FPSNZ.

Convening Judge’s Comments
On behalf of my fellow judges, Rosita Manning FPSNZ and
Brian Cudby FPSNZ EFIAP ESFIAP, it was a great honour
and pleasure to have been asked to judge the 2014 Laurie
Thomas New Zealand Landscape Salon. Each of us has
participated enthusiastically in this Salon for many years
with some success and it was interesting and pleasurable
to be able to assess this year’s crop of images from the
other side of the fence.
Whilst the top images were of a very high standard indeed
it was a little disappointing to see quite a number of images
that suffered from such basic faults as poor exposure, poor
use of lighting, simple compositional errors and basic errors
in post editing. This did rather surprise us given that many
of these images were probably subjected to some form of
assessment or judging at club level prior to submission in
this higher forum.
However, there was a good level of images that easily met
the required acceptance standard with those awarded higher
awards all readily meeting the higher standard expected of a
Salon of this standing. It was encouraging to see the exquisite
use of lighting and composition in the top images, and in
most cases, the imprint of the author in conveying his or her
feelings toward the subject. It was great to see an ongoing
empathy amongst New Zealand’s amateur photographic
community for both the traditional and modern approach
to the New Zealand landscape. A worthy exhibition to the
memory and achievements in the disciplines of Landscape
photography of the late Laurie Thomas.
We congratulate all of those who participated in this
Salon and especially applaud those of you who achieved
higher awards. We hope that you will all have gained good
experience from having participated at this higher level of
Landscape photography and that you will all be encouraged
to participate again in the 2015 Salon.
In conclusion I would like to thank the small dedicated team
of people from the Howick Camera Club, led by Sheryl
Williams, who supported the judging team on judging day and
attended to all the behind the scenes planning so necessary
to making the judging day the success that it was.
