Angela Wright is a final year International Business & Modern Languages student and
has spent time studying abroad, has had degree-related work experience and also
voluntary and part-time work experience. She has applied for a graduate position as a
Media Buyer and has targeted her CV and covering letter to the key skills required for the
post.
The job involves communicating with media sales companies to buy advertising space on
behalf of clients and involves lots of communication and contact with clients and
companies, a fast-paced working environment and a need to keep up to date with the
market and changing audiences.
SA
M
The key skills for this position are the ability to establish good relationships with clients,
as well as strong communication, negotiating and organisational skills. Media Buyers also
need to have good financial management skills, an ability to work under pressure and to
act decisively. As you can see, Angela has reflected these skills throughout her CV and
has brought them all together in a confident and positive manner in her covering letter,
with strong examples as evidence of these skills. She has also emphasised her interest in
the media, and shown how that interest combines with her knowledge and experience.

Mr Thomas Daniels
Media Ad UK
46 Charbridge Avenue
Edinburgh
EH4 7YY
I am currently in the final year of an Honours degree in International Business and
Modern Languages at the University of Strathclyde, specialising in Marketing and
French, and wish to apply for the position of Media Buyer, as advertised on the
Mediaweek website.
I have studied a range of marketing subjects including in-depth modules in Marketing
Communications, Direct and E-Marketing, and Buyer Behaviours which have given me a
sound knowledge of advertising, the media and the business side of marketing. Having
studied finance at both Strathclyde and the International School of Business in Lyon,
France, I have developed skills in financial management, as well as a strong analytical
ability.
M
My enthusiasm for the media side of marketing was confirmed through my experience
with a busy marketing agency, which gave me a unique insight into the challenging and
high pressure role of a media buyer. During my placement I was able to use the effective
communication and strong interpersonal skills I have developed in my previous work
experience, particularly while Vice President and Executive Board Member of AIESEC
UK.
SA
I am ambitious, friendly and highly organised and Media Ad UK would be a perfect
opportunity for me to combine my knowledge in business and marketing, skills in
communication and negotiation, and interest in the media. That Media Ad UK is planning
to expand its business in Europe is a further attraction for me, since it offers the
possibility of using my language skills and travelling, both of which I thoroughly enjoy.
My CV is enclosed for your consideration. Please contact me if you need further
information. I shall look forward to the opportunity to discuss my application with you at
an interview.
Yours sincerely
Angela Wright

Robert Allen has recently completed a Masters in Computer Aided Engineering Design.
He also has an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering qualification, industrial experience
(a project-based summer placement) and further work experience in a range of part-time
posts. Robert has two CVs – a two-page graduate CV for a Graduate Traineeship in
Design Engineering and a one-page CV for a part-time post as a Team Leader in a call
centre.
M
Graduate CV: As a design engineer, in whatever branch of engineering Robert chooses
to specialise (his Masters allows him to work in almost any engineering discipline, as the
focus of his degree is on the use of knowledge-based computer systems to support
engineering design). As well as the knowledge gained from his subjects, projects and
dissertations, Robert has identified and presented the technical skills he has developed
through both his study and his work experience, including his knowledge of software,
design skills and practical abilities. In addition, Robert has demonstrated his qualities and
attributes and these tie in nicely with the personal skills sought in graduate trainee design
engineers – for example, his interpersonal and team working abilities since design
engineers often need to work across departments and liaise with both management and
clients about their needs.
SA
Part-time CV: While completing applications for his first graduate post, Robert has
decided to work part-time in a well-paid job to pay his bills. The information that he
needs to highlight for a team leader post in a call-centre is different from that of a design
engineering one, so he has a one-page CV that highlights his work experience first. This
allows him to cut information from his graduate CV that is not relevant and focus the
potential employer’s attention on the experience that is.

Graham MacLeod has recently completed a Masters in Social Research, after having
gained a first class Honours in Geography and has a range of part-time work experience,
though no degree-related work experience. Graham has written a speculative application
to a Health Research Board centre looking for research opportunities.
Social researchers design, plan, carry out, analyse and collate social research projects
using a variety of methodologies and approaches for a number of different purposes.
Thus, knowledge of research methodologies and techniques, analytical abilities and
project management skills are crucial to the job.
SA
M
In his CV Graham has clearly shown the knowledge he has of social research, both
theoretical and practical, and has summarised the key methods he has used. He has also
described his work experience in a manner that highlights his transferable skills, showing
how these would benefit him in a social research environment. Since Graham is applying
speculatively, he has had to write a very focused, confident and persuasive covering letter
that expands on the information in his CV. He has also clearly shown his knowledge of
the organisation he is applying to, identified exactly how he matches their work and how
he could be a valuable new member of staff.

Dear Professor Rushford
I have recently completed a Masters in Social Research at the University of Strathclyde
and am writing to you to ask if you have any opportunities for a committed researcher
with a range of proven research and analytical skills, and an interest in research into
health and education in Scotland.
Throughout my studies I have been continually intrigued and impressed by the amount
and quality of research undertaken by the Health Research Board, and in fact I have used
HRB reports in both my undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations – on health and
education in Scotland respectively. (Please see enclosed CV for titles.)
SA
M
My MSc in Social Research has equipped me with a sound knowledge of key quantitative
and qualitative research methodologies and through my dissertation I gained experience
in in-depth qualitative interviewing, having interviewed a sample of 20 education
professionals active in the west of Scotland. I have developed an awareness of key
considerations in the design and implementation of engaged research practices and I
worked on an HRB case study for my Social Research in Practice group project,
analysing and evaluating its design and methodology. I have also become adept in the
evaluation and analysis of data using both practical techniques and statistical packages,
particularly SPSS.
Having worked in customer service roles and as a tutor for second year undergraduates I
have developed excellent communication, interpersonal and listening skills, while my
experience supervising in my local video store has highlighted to me the importance of
team work and of maintaining clear communication and co-operation between
management and staff.
With my knowledge, experience and interests in health and education I feel I would be a
valuable addition to the HRB team and am particularly interested in working on research
related to the 'West of Scotland Twenty-10 Study: Health in the Community', either on
current research or on analyses yet to be done. I am available to start work immediately.
My CV is enclosed for your consideration. I will call you at the beginning of next week to
discuss any opportunities you may have for me. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if
you have any questions.
Yours sincerely

Lynne Forbes is in the final year of her Chemistry degree and has had two years of
relevant work experience. Her CV is targeted towards a Research & Development job
with a major pharmaceutical company.
In Research & Development work a lot of time is spent in the laboratory, designing,
planning and carrying out experiments, analysing data, and developing the results of
experiments. Those working in R&D usually work in a team setting and need to regularly
communicate plans and results to the rest of the team, as well as to the wider organisation.
SA
M
A related degree discipline is crucial for Research & Development and Lynne has chosen
to describe her current studies in a very positive, focused manner instead of listing
subjects studied. As well as clearly highlighting her practical knowledge in her Education
and Work Experience sections, Lynne has also identified and laid out her key skills right
at the beginning of the CV, and has used evidence pulled from work experience,
university study and extra-curricular activities. At the beginning of the CV, she has
included a very punchy and focused Career Aim, and it is clear that the rest of the CV
shows that she has the knowledge, skills and experience to work in her chosen field.
Above all, her CV communicates her enthusiasm for her subject and chosen profession.

Joe Carlin is in his first year at university, studying a degree in Mathematics. He is
currently looking for part-time work in retail, perhaps in a high street clothing or music

to potential employers that he can ‘do the job’.

Although Joe’s actual degree subject would seem irrelevant to a part-time job in retail, he
has described it in such a way that it strongly conveys transferable skills attractive to
retailers; problem-solving, team working and communication skills (each tied in to the
context in which he has developed them). Joe has also emphasised positions he held while
at school and shown what knowledge and skills he gained from them.
