President’s Report to 6 April 2015
Well 2015 seems to have moved on at a great rate.
Samford Lions have been quite busy over the last seven weeks or so since
my last report.. We had a Beyond Blue speaker at our February dinner
meeting. His message was relevant and cogent and we all left with a heightened awareness of this important issue.
With March came election time and we received nominations for the 20152016 Board and Committees at our 5 March Business meeting, filling all
positions except President. John Burnham subsequently volunteered to
take on this role in absence of other nominations. For those who wondered
I declined a second term for personal reasons, including that Amanda and I
expect to be away a fair bit in the coming year.
The following Saturday 7 March saw Samford Lions join with Rotary and
the RSL for a massive working bee with the Council arborists to plant 80
young trees for the Samford Avenue of Honour project. The project is well
advanced and the committee is confident that it will be completed in time
for the Anzac day centenary.
Following cyclone Pam and its impact on Vanuatu in March we decided to
run a collection outside IGA in support of LCIF’s relief efforts. Over three
days Thursday, Friday and Sunday 19, 20 22 March we collected getting
on towards $4000 from the generosity of the Samford community, especially those shopping at IGA. While it was a Lions initiative it became somewhat of a cooperative effort with Rotary who covered Saturday. The efforts
of those Samford Lions who were able to find the time at such short notice
to man the roster for the three days were very much appreciated.
On the following Wednesday 25 March we were guests of North Lakes Lions
and president Diane Unwin for a joint Dinner meeting at Murrumba downs
tavern. Just over half the Samford club was able to attend. It was interesting
to see how another Club does it, their set-up, their agenda, their bar, their
food service. There was good fellowship beforehand including renewed con-
tact by those from each Club who already knew each other and a comprehensive and entertaining agenda Guest speaker was Reg Gulley, immediate past
MP for their electorate. There also appeared to be a fair bit of envious attention by Samford Lions on the dinner menu. Safe to say we all thought it was
pretty good value for the same $25 as our own meetings.
The next Saturday 28 March was Twilight market day, organized by the Samford Leos’ budding Omega group. It was a big effort by these Leos and by all
accounts successful, with many queries of “when is the next one”? A small
number of Lions manned an information stall for Samford Lions Club to promote awareness into the Samford community and encourage those interested
to consider becoming a Lion.
We have just finished the Easter Art Show, where we sponsored and supported the Samford Artworks Group in putting together their Art Show. While noone was counting it was generally thought that attendance was better than
their previous show two years ago and they hope to make it a regular event. It
was a great display of the quality of artistic talent in and around Samford.
Samford gets quite a lot of visitors over Easter who compensate for the locals
who like to go away. On Saturday evening they held a glamorous opening
event with champagne and canapés. Yours truly and Lion David Roberts performed as the black-bow-tied bartenders, Lion Jo Roberts and Lions partner
Amanda both in elegant dress helped with the canapé service and Lion Alice
did the essential photography and social reporting. As Lions President I was
called on to say a few words and I officially opened the art show. Guests included newly elected local MP Mark Furner and his wife plus the Samford socialites and artists’ friends. We also ran a sausage sizzle on each of the three
days as the Artworks Group were really keen to have this. Unfortunately sales
generally met the pessimistic expectations of the experienced sizzlers and we
would probably rethink this next time. Nonetheless everyone involved really
appreciated the efforts of those who rostered on for the three consecutive
days of sausage sizzle and it was all worthwhile. When counting is finished it
looks like Samford Lions has made around $1700 for our Community account.
Coming up in April are the Zone 7 Pillowathon in Mitchelton Park on Sunday
12 April, walk for an Aussie Kid by Brisbane Bunya Lions on 19 April, Anzac
day centenary on the 25th and our combined dinner meeting at Ashgrove The
Gap lions on Tuesday 28 April.
Finally our dinner meetings have shifted to a new venue and will be at Topiaries from April 16, our next dinner meeting. Our new hosts are Helen and Peter
Hempsall. We said goodbye to Steve Cowley at a farewell function in the
Homestead on Wednesday 1 April. It was organised by the Samford
Chamber of Commerce and I attended on behalf of Samford Lions. I said
a few words on our behalf to thank Steve for his years of support and
wish him well for the years ahead, as did Rotary, Bob Millar as local councillor and the Chamber. Rotary presented him with a watch and the
Chamber brought out a magnificently iced superman cake. The Chamber
also put together a memento book for Steve with photos from all the
groups and people he hosted over the years.

LEO NEWS
The Omega Leos’ ambitious inaugural markets were a huge success—
lovely weather, interested visitors and happy stallholders.
The Alpha Leos painted faces and coloured hair and accrued over
$200 thereby. All in all a very pleasant afternoon..
The Alphas are keeping busy:
Their March meeting featured speakers from Canine Helpers, an organisation which trains and certifies assistance dogs for disabled
people. Each dog is trained to meet the needs of its individual owner.
We were especially impressed by the skills of Harley, one of the two
assistance dogs at the meeting, who was able to pick up items as
small as a dropped coin and pass them to his owner Peter.
The April meeting was addressed by a representative of Samford
Commons. During the presentation the Leo club was invited to assist
with the inaugural Samford outdoor movie night on Friday 17th April.
They will be supplying cakes and popcorn (and raising funds through
doing so.)
So—the upcoming events for the Leos include:

Friday April 17th: supporting Creative Samford’s inaugural movie-in-thepark night.

Saturday 18th April: a team of Leos will be assisting at Vital Connection’s
Soup Kitchen in Brisbane’s CBD

Sunday 19th April: the Leos are going ice-skating together and hoping to
garner new members by inviting friends to the event.

17th May: Leo face painters have been asked to practise their skills at the
Million Paws walk (they’ll need to buy more paints first.)

23rd—30th May: the Leo club will be participating in the Red Shield Appeal
collection.

21st June: Leo High Tea at Topiaries. Soon a band of Leos will advance on
Samford’s Main St on a quest for sponsorship for this event.

Easter Art Show
Over the Easter Weekend the Lions auspiced Samford Artworks’ Easter Show in the
Farmers’ Hall. Lion partner Amanda and Lion Joanna had been meeting regularly with
the Artworks subcommittee and were able to help plan logistics. On the Opening Night
Lions David and Peter manned the bar while Lion Joanna manned the kitchen with the
aid of a commercial pie-warmer kindly loaned by St Paul’s Church. The entry-donation
went to Lions and that and certain other monies will add about $1700 to the Lions community account!

Sizzling was being practised.

A coalition of community groups came together to plant 80 advanced trees under the direction of arborist Peter Bishop. The process included forming up swales and placing mulch to
allow for the efficient collection of rainwater flow across the slope. Samford Lions fielded 3
teams for the event.
Other works have been proceeding on the site in preparation for the opening on Anzac Day,
in which Samford Lions will again be participating.

play….
At short notice a number of Samford Lions and Lions partners took part in a collection
outside the IGA for the victims of Cyclone Pam—reckoned to be the worst natural disaster ever to strike Vanuatu. Samford people had all seen pictures of the devastation,
and were very generous. Altogether the exercise raised some $4000!

A woman starts her own business. She's a good businesswoman, shrewd and diligent, and the company keeps growing strongly. Eventually she decides that she's spending so much on legal advice it
would be a good idea to employ a young in-house lawyer.
"As I'm sure you can understand," she begins her interview with the first applicant for the position, "in
a business like this, our personal integrity must be beyond question." She leans forward. "Mr. Peterson, are you an 'honest' lawyer?"
"Honest?" replies the young man. "I'm so honest that when my dad lent me $100 000 for my education I paid back every cent the minute I completed my first case."
"Impressive. And what sort of case was that?"
He squirms a bit: "My dad sued me for the money."
A blonde woman is having financial troubles so decides to kidnap a child and demand a ransom.
She goes to John Scott Park, grabs a little boy, takes him behind a tree and writes a note: "I have kidnapped your child. I am sorry to do this but I need the money. Leave $10,000 in a brown paper bag
behind the big pine tree near the Arts and Crafts shop - by 10am tomorrow. (Signed) ‘The Blonde’”
She pins the note to the little boy's shirt and tells him to go straight home.
The next morning, she returns to the park to find $10,000 in a brown paper bag behind the big pine
tree. Inside the bag with the cash is a note: "Here is your money. I cannot believe that one blonde
would do this to another…."
An old man and his wife go to their doctor for a check-up. They discuss the fact that though they feel
fine, their memories are not what they used to be. The doctor assures them that this is normal. He
suggests that they start to write themselves notes to help remember things.
Later that night while watching TV the old man decides to get himself some ice cream. He asks his
wife if she wants any.
She says "Yes, a bowl of vanilla, please." As he goes she asks, "Aren't you going to write that down?"
"No - just a bowl of vanilla, That's easy."
"Could I have some strawberries with it as well?"
"OK."
"Do you think you should write that down?"
"No need - vanilla ice cream and strawberries."
"And some whipped cream also."
"OK."
"Shouldn't you write that down?"
"No! A bowl of ice cream, strawberries and whipped cream! I remember!".
After several minutes in the kitchen he comes back with a plate of bacon and eggs.
"I told you that you should have written it down," says his wife. "You've forgotten my toast!"
