IHOP Executive and Former Food Bank Client Gives Back Over the holidays, Jennifer Steger, IHOP’s Director of Human Resources, visited the Food Bank and presented the Food Bank’s CEO, James Floros, with a donation check for $500 on behalf of San Diego County IHOPs. During the check presentation, Steger told Floros that the last time she visited the Food Bank was when she was teenager and she and her mother needed food assistance. “My father died of a drug overdose when I was three years old. My mom wasn’t educated. Like most people then, you got married and raised your kids, and the man was supposed to be the provider. Well, in this case the man wasn’t the provider. The man overdosed, and all of a sudden my mom had to figure out what she was going to do with three little children. She worked in grocery stores. She worked for Kentucky Fried Chicken. She did whatever she could to feed the kids and pay the rent. So it was my mom and three kids trying to make ends meet, and we grew up very poor.” explains Steger. “There was a time when we didn’t have food. When I was a teenager my mom got injured at work and became completely bedridden. During that time it was just the two of us living in a one-bedroom apartment in Escondido, and I was going to San Pasqual High School. I didn’t know what to do. I was thinking, ‘How am I going to feed us?’ There was no food. I had paid all the bills that I could with the little money I had coming in from working part time. We had electricity and a phone. We had toothpaste and soap. But we were out of food,” says Steger. “I called the Food Bank and said we need help. I said, ‘I just don’t know what to do.’ I was just a teenager in high school. It was incredibly humbling to say that we needed help, and to receive the help. But the people at the Food Bank were friendly and warm and asked me what we needed. We got help from the Food Bank for three months.” continued on page 3 www.sandiegofoodbank.org 9850 Distribution Avenue San Diego, CA 92121 858-527-1419 www.sandiegofoodbank.org “Thanks to you, the Food Bank enters 2015 from a position of strength” Steve Bernstein – Vice Chairman Business Banking President, Wells Fargo Bank Harvey C. Sometimes Steger and her mother reflect on their period of hardship. “My mom has regrets that she couldn’t provide better. She feels like she wasn’t a good parent. She feels like she should have done more and been able to give more. The thing that I told my mom is that whatever we didn’t have, we always knew that we were loved. There was a huge amount of love. My family has had our ups and downs. For me to come out from under and on the success side and to be able to volunteer and give back is a blessing. It’s just a huge thing for me.” Jennifer Steger donates $500 to the Food Bank on behalf of San Diego County IHOPs. Save the date for the Food Bank’s annual gala taking place at our 80,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Miramar on Saturday, May 2, 2015. After graduating from high school, Steger got a full time job as a hostess at IHOP, and at the age of 23 she was promoted to general manager. Two years later she was promoted to district manger overseeing six IHOP restaurants in San Diego County. In addition to volunteering 20 hours a month with the San Diego Police Department as a Crisis Interventionist, Steger also cares for her mother. “I take care of my mom now.
