FOOD FOR THOUGHT - San Diego Food Bank

Corporations
In October, UC San Diego, San Diego State University, and California
State University San Marcos participated in the three week Colleges
Rock Hunger Food Drive and collected more than 310,000 pounds of
food through food and monetary donations!
Each college hosted campus-wide events to collect food and educate
students about hunger in San Diego. Colleges hosted food drives
during homecoming festivities, at sporting events, concerts, and at
university transport hubs.
SDSU collected an astounding 304,718 pounds of food with
UCSD and Cal State San Marcos collecting 2,000 more pounds
than last year.
A huge thank you to all of the students
who participated in the competition!

Over the holidays, SDG&E employees collected donations
for the Food Bank on #GivingTuesday, the national day of
giving. And SDG&E matched their employees’ donations to
the Food Bank for the day of giving totaling $56,000! In
addition, SDG&E donated $31,000 to hunger-relief programs
for low-income military families, the purchase of fresh
produce for our Neighborhood Distributon Program, and for
the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. In total,
SDG&E has donated $87,000 to the Food Bank!
All participating schools win just by helping provide food to
about 500,000 San Diegans in need. The top four schools that
collect the most food will receive a cash donation to their
ASB fund. All schools that register and hold a food drive will
be entered in a drawing to win the Titanium Package School

IHOP Executive and Former Food
Bank Client Gives Back
Over the holidays, Jennifer Steger, IHOP’s
Director of Human Resources, visited the
Food Bank and presented the Food Bank’s
CEO, James Floros, with a donation check
for $500 on behalf of San Diego County
IHOPs.
During the check presentation, Steger told
Floros that the last time she visited the
Food Bank was when she was teenager and
she and her mother needed food assistance.
“My father died of a drug overdose when
I was three years old. My mom wasn’t
educated. Like most people then, you got
married and raised your kids, and the man
was supposed to be the provider. Well, in
this case the man wasn’t the provider. The
man overdosed, and all of a sudden my
mom had to figure out what she was going
to do with three little children. She worked
in grocery stores. She worked for Kentucky
Fried Chicken. She did whatever she could
to feed the kids and pay the rent. So it was
my mom and three kids trying to make
ends meet, and we grew up very poor.”
explains Steger.
“There was a time when we didn’t have
food. When I was a teenager my mom got
injured at work and became completely
bedridden. During that time it was just
the two of us living in a one-bedroom
apartment in Escondido, and I was going
to San Pasqual High School. I didn’t know
what to do. I was thinking, ‘How am I
going to feed us?’ There was no food. I had
paid all the bills that I could with the little
money I had coming in from working part
time. We had electricity and a phone. We
had toothpaste and soap. But we were out
of food,” says Steger.
“I called the Food Bank and said we need
help. I said, ‘I just don’t know what to do.’
I was just a teenager in high school. It was
incredibly humbling to say that we needed
help, and to receive the help. But the people
at the Food Bank were friendly and warm
and asked me what we needed. We got help
from the Food Bank for three months.”

I would like to recognize our Holiday Food Drive partners First 5 San Diego and Wells

FOX5 News, NBC 7, KyXy 96.5, KPRI 102.7, and the U-T San Diego who did a great
job getting the message out to the community!
Thank you to everyone who supported the Holiday Food Drive and enabled us to feed
families in need over the holidays and into the New Year!
I am excited to announce some important construction projects that we have planned
which will make the Food Bank’s warehouse a state-of-the-art facility! Thanks to
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding and support from long-term
donors, below are a few major projects that will be completed this year:
• Building a 3,800 sq. ft. recycling center in our warehouse to recycle
cardboard, plastic, glass, cans and compost that will save the Food
Bank $10,000 annually in landfill disposal fees.
• Renovating 9,000 sq. ft. at the east end of our warehouse to create a
Volunteer & Events Center which will provide a safe environment for
volunteers to work and a venue for Food Bank events.
• Expanding our 72,000 cubic ft. refrigeration unit by 48,000 cubic ft.
to total 120,000 cubic ft. enabling us to procure and distribute more
healthy, fresh food.
• Installing solar panels on our roof which will save $120,000 annually
in utility costs.
In 2001, Steger’s CEO Mike Szawielenko asked her to establish a
human resources department for the company. Szawielenko paid
for Steger to attend night classes to get her Professional Human
Resources (PHR) Certification at SDSU while she worked full time.
After completing the course, Steger established the department
and has been its head for 14 years.
The evening will kick off with a reception and silent auction with
tray-passed hor d’ouevres and craft cocktails which will be followed
by dinner prepared tableside by your table’s own personal chef. The
program and live auction will follow, and the evening will finish with
live entertainment and dancing.

hardship. “My mom has regrets that she couldn’t provide better.
She feels like she wasn’t a good parent. She feels like she should
have done more and been able to give more. The thing that I told
my mom is that whatever we didn’t have, we always knew that

I would like to recognize our Holiday Food Drive partners First 5 San Diego and Wells
Fargo Bank, our supermarket partners Vons and Stater Bros., and our media partners,
FOX5 News, NBC 7, KyXy 96.5, KPRI 102.7, and the U-T San Diego who did a great
job getting the message out to the community!

Fundraising 4%
These exciting projects will better equip the Food Bank to be an even more efficient
agency and help ensure that every possible donor dollar will be put to work serving
our community.
The Food Bank is one of the highest rated charities in the country –
receiving four out of four stars from Charity Navigator, the nation’s
leading independent charity evaluator.
But we couldn’t do this without our supporters! Thank you again for all of
your help!
And the Food Bank is one of the most efficient charities in San Diego
County. For every dollar you donate, 94 cents goes directly to our
food programs and services – only 6 cents goes towards
administration and fundraising.

Food Drive Raises 22,000 Pounds of Food!
The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS)
teamed up with the North County Transit District,
Albertsons supermarkets and the San Diego Girl
Scouts to host the seventh annual ‘Stuff the Bus’
Food Drive.
The food drive was held during the first week of
December, and on Saturday, Dec. 6, over 540 Girl
Scouts volunteered at all 40 San Diego County
Albertsons and asked shoppers to donate to the
food drive on behalf of the Food Bank.
At the end of the food drive the buses drove in
a caravan to the Food Bank where they were
unloaded by military volunteers.
Thanks to our streamlined efficiency, your donation goes a
long way towards feeding hungry families and individuals in
San Diego County!

The Food Bank’s gala dinner will feature 40 celebrated, local chefs who
will each host a personal table of 10 guests, and they will prepare a
multi-course dinner of their own signature, mouthwatering delicacies.
Each table will be personally styled by your chef with exquisite
centerpieces, linens and décor.
Sometimes Steger and her mother reflect on their period of
hardship. “My mom has regrets that she couldn’t provide better.
She feels like she wasn’t a good parent. She feels like she should
have done more and been able to give more. The thing that I told
my mom is that whatever we didn’t have, we always knew that
we were loved. There was a huge amount of love. My family has
had our ups and downs. For me to come out from under and on
the success side and to be able to volunteer and give back is a
blessing. It’s just a huge thing for me.”
Jennifer Steger donates $500 to the Food Bank on behalf of
San Diego County IHOPs.
Save the date for the Food Bank’s annual gala taking place at our
80,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Miramar on Saturday, May 2, 2015.
After graduating from high school, Steger got a full time job as a
hostess at IHOP, and at the age of 23 she was promoted to general
manager. Two years later she was promoted to district manger
overseeing six IHOP restaurants in San Diego County.
In addition to volunteering 20 hours a month with the San Diego
Police Department as a Crisis Interventionist, Steger also cares for
her mother. “I take care of my mom now. She’s lived with me for
the last six years.”

IHOP Executive and Former Food
Bank Client Gives Back
Over the holidays, Jennifer Steger, IHOP’s
Director of Human Resources, visited the
Food Bank and presented the Food Bank’s
CEO, James Floros, with a donation check
for $500 on behalf of San Diego County
IHOPs.
During the check presentation, Steger told
Floros that the last time she visited the
Food Bank was when she was teenager and
she and her mother needed food assistance.
“My father died of a drug overdose when
I was three years old. My mom wasn’t
educated. Like most people then, you got
married and raised your kids, and the man
was supposed to be the provider. Well, in
this case the man wasn’t the provider. The
man overdosed, and all of a sudden my
mom had to figure out what she was going
to do with three little children. She worked
in grocery stores. She worked for Kentucky
Fried Chicken. She did whatever she could
to feed the kids and pay the rent. So it was
my mom and three kids trying to make
ends meet, and we grew up very poor.”
explains Steger.
“There was a time when we didn’t have
food. When I was a teenager my mom got
injured at work and became completely
bedridden. During that time it was just
the two of us living in a one-bedroom
apartment in Escondido, and I was going
to San Pasqual High School. I didn’t know
what to do. I was thinking, ‘How am I
going to feed us?’ There was no food. I had
paid all the bills that I could with the little
money I had coming in from working part
time. We had electricity and a phone. We
had toothpaste and soap. But we were out
of food,” says Steger.
“I called the Food Bank and said we need
help. I said, ‘I just don’t know what to do.’
I was just a teenager in high school. It was
incredibly humbling to say that we needed
help, and to receive the help. But the people
at the Food Bank were friendly and warm
and asked me what we needed. We got help
from the Food Bank for three months.”

guarantee a hungry individual at least one healthy meal every day,
every month, for the entire year. And a monthly gift of $30 will
provide three meals a day, every month, for the entire year.

IHOP Executive and Former Food
Bank Client Gives Back
Over the holidays, Jennifer Steger, IHOP’s
Director of Human Resources, visited the
Food Bank and presented the Food Bank’s
CEO, James Floros, with a donation check
for $500 on behalf of San Diego County
IHOPs.
During the check presentation, Steger told
Floros that the last time she visited the
Food Bank was when she was teenager and
she and her mother needed food assistance.
“My father died of a drug overdose when
I was three years old. My mom wasn’t
educated. Like most people then, you got
married and raised your kids, and the man
was supposed to be the provider. Well, in
this case the man wasn’t the provider. The
man overdosed, and all of a sudden my
mom had to figure out what she was going
to do with three little children. She worked
in grocery stores. She worked for Kentucky
Fried Chicken. She did whatever she could
to feed the kids and pay the rent. So it was
my mom and three kids trying to make
ends meet, and we grew up very poor.”
explains Steger.
“There was a time when we didn’t have
food. When I was a teenager my mom got
injured at work and became completely
bedridden. During that time it was just
the two of us living in a one-bedroom
apartment in Escondido, and I was going
to San Pasqual High School. I didn’t know
what to do. I was thinking, ‘How am I
going to feed us?’ There was no food. I had
paid all the bills that I could with the little
money I had coming in from working part
time. We had electricity and a phone. We
had toothpaste and soap. But we were out
of food,” says Steger.
“I called the Food Bank and said we need
help. I said, ‘I just don’t know what to do.’
I was just a teenager in high school. It was
incredibly humbling to say that we needed
help, and to receive the help. But the people
at the Food Bank were friendly and warm
and asked me what we needed. We got help
from the Food Bank for three months.”
