The Right Medicine
Sharps Disposal
1) Take an inventory of your
prescription and over-the-counter
medications.
California law prohibits the disposal of sharps
waste—including needles, lancets, and
syringes—in the trash or recycling containers.
2) Lock up and secure your medicine
chest.
Sharps waste must be delivered in a punctureand shatter-proof container with a tight lid
(detergent bottle or coffee can, etc.).
3) Take your medication EXACTLY as
prescribed.
4) Have any unwanted medications?
Take them to your local Police or
Sheriff’s Department where
prescription drug collection boxes
are located, as detailed in this
brochure.

Household Hazardous Waste
Collection of household hazardous waste (such
as aerosol cans, mercury thermometers, and
hearing aid batteries) differs by city or jurisdiction.
