Dear Babinda P-12 School Community,
Tuckshop taking orders
Over recent weeks it has been great to have the school’s tuckshop back up
and running again with solid numbers of orders and lots of smiling faces. A
huge thank you must go to the steady stream of volunteers giving up their time
to make it successful. Thank you all - my regular sandwich and fruit salad
are fantastic! With all of the volunteers it has also meant that the tuckshop
has started taking orders right up until 9am on the Tuesday and Friday mornings. So if you are not
feeling like the early morning lunch creation I highly recommend putting an order in. Feel free to join
our volunteers too.
Under 8s Day
Last Thursday, the school held our annual ‘Under 8s Day’ for all of the early years’ children in our
community. Among those to join the school for the morning were children from: Mirriwinni, Bartle
Frere, Bellenden Ker, McDonnell Creek and St Rita’s Schools, as well as Babinda Community
Kindergarten and Babinda Community Day Care children and parents. The morning was buzzing with
excitement as everyone enjoyed rotating through collaging, necklace threading, biscuit decorating,
painting and drawing, Lego, dress ups, face painting, obstacle courses, cricket, rugby league, bike riding
and the highlight of the day - the wildlife presentation delivered by Zoo to You. The morning finished
off with dancing fun from our year 5/6 students dressed as clowns. A big thanks to all involved for
your efforts.
Get in the Spirit!! Crocs or Cudas – Who will be champions?
It’s time again to drag out the red and green anything, throw on some war paint and get your house
spirit on. With just under 2 weeks until our annual school Athletics Carnival the students have been
honing their track and field skills ready for the full day program being held on Friday 12 th June. Please
come along and help cheer on the athletes. Go Crocs! Go Cudas!
Performance Pact – Staying on track to success.
Another 5 week performance check is just being collated and parents should expect an update letter in
the coming week or so as well as correspondence about tuition support and on-track awards. Well done
to those students working really hard to maintain their goals.
Student achievement of learning goals is the most important performance measure for our school and
we are all committed to making sure that children are meeting or beating their personal learning goals.
Whether your child’s goal is an A or a C – we are committed to getting them there and keeping them
there. Please feel free to contact the school to discuss your child’s performance, support options or if
you would like to adjust their learning goal.
Connect Program Campers
Congratulations to the year 7/8 students in our Connect program who, despite rain and leeches,
successfully camped overnight and walked the track between Goldsborough Valley and Babinda this
week. Thank you to program leader, Mr Coleing. What a challenge to have successfully completed!!
Endeavour Foundation’s Older Carer Initiative invites you to a
presentation on what will the National Disability Insurance
Scheme mean to locals with a disability & their families and how
to get the best support. Kerrie Morgan is guest speaker.
WEDNESDAY 3 JUNE 1:30pm to 3:00pm OR 5:30pm to 7:00pm
at the SPIRIT OF BABINDA, rear of Babinda Taskforce. RSVP to
Kerrie Morgan on 0423 823 114, email [email protected]

There were two girls called Waveny and Alinta who were
the entertainers. It was very funny especially when the
girls sang about how wombats’ pooh and how a koala
wanted to be Spiderman. This would give him courage.

I liked it when they told us about aboriginal culture. They told us
about their names and what they meant. Waveny means green
tree frog and she said if she sees a frog it means something good
will happen. Alinta means some type of bird and if she sees this
bird something bad will happen. We sang about nature and Joe
the Wombat. I enjoyed it.
It was good. I liked the girl, Waveny, when
she sat on a bo0x and different drums and
they made different sounds.

Indigenous Leaders of Tomorrow Conference
Eight students, including myself, had the opportunity to represent the school at the ILT Conference last week in Cairns.
Approximately 200 students from 17 schools from across Far North Queensland, as far north as Taigai Secondary
College and south as Tully State High, came along to the Conference for an empowering 3 days. Day 1 introduced the
2015 ILT theme “Journey to the Land of Empowerment”. Ice breakers, times of self-reflection and affirmation were
opportunities to mix it with other schools. Day 2, Year 12s toured Wu Chopperen and visited JCU where Minjiluk, our
school captain last year, talked
about alternative pathways. Year 11s participated in
team building and personal challenge activities at
Holloways Beach. Day 3 was about closing remarks and
the ISSU/ILT team showed Babinda’s 2013
presentation as an example to the
other schools of what we all can do as projects this
year. Overall it was an amazing
experience and on behalf of the ILT students here at
Babinda, we thank the school and
our mentor for this opportunity and ISSU/ILT for this
life-changing leadership program
