2015 Local Literacy Advocate Agreement Form
Barbershop Books is a community-based literacy program that creates child-friendly reading spaces
in barbershops. This innovative program brings children’s books into a male centered environment,
connecting barbers and parents to the early reading experiences of young boys in a positive and
culturally meaningful way. Barbershops Books works to improve boys' access to engaging
books and to increase the amount of time boys read for fun.
The Barbershop Books local Literacy Advocate’s role is to maintain the reading space at a
Barbershop Books affiliate. The local literacy advocate works closely with the barbershop owner and
barbers to promote reading in the barbershop. Below is a list of the responsibilities that accompany
this position. These important tasks help ensure that Barbershop Books program is successful.
Failing to meet the following responsibilities may result in the barbershop listed below being removed
from Barbershop Books’ national network.
By checking the following boxes, you accept the responsibilities described below.
o I will replace missing and damaged books at least once a month
o I will use the Barbershop Books maintenance form to track missing and damaged books
o I will communicate program challenges/successes to Barbershop Books head quarters (HQ)
o I will take a picture of the reading space within a week of its installation
o I will advertise Barbershop Books events in the community
o I will remind children to keep the books in the shop for other kids to read.
o I will inform barbers and parents of the program’s goals (see first paragraph of this form)
o I will complete a 5 minute literacy advocate survey every six months
o I will respond promptly to requests for information
o I will take and share Barbershop Books related pictures regularly on social media:
