JENN SHIFFLET

JENN SHIFFLET
BIO / ARTIST STATEMENT
Jenn Shifflet's work is an exploration into the inner experience of time, the perception of
space, and reflections of the natural world. Rhythmic, atmospheric, and organic in
nature, her paintings rest in the pause between movement and stillness, emergence and
dissolution, where time may unfold slowly through subtle interplays of color and shifting
light.
Shifflet sees the painting process as a balancing act of exercising control while also finding
freedom in stepping out of the way enough to allow for chance and intuition to guide her.
In the repetition of brushstrokes, she finds the meditative possibility of absorption in the
rhythm of the process. Each painting is slowly built up of many thin transparent glazes that
become saturated color, depth of space, and luminosity over time. While embodying a
symbolic relationship to the natural world, Shiffflet's paintings intend to remain ambivalent
in their reference to a particular time, place, or relationship to gravity, allowing them to
encourage the contemplative experience of personal resonance, recollection, or familiarity.
