With apartment buildings expanding
out from urban boundaries, Aspera
Apartments offered city living in a
suburban location. Features included
modern architectural finishes and state of
the art designs. As the project progressed,
the builder showed a keen interest in prefabricating areas of the building owing to
the wide ranging benefits on site. After
initial scope and pre-design meetings,
SBS Group were awarded the package
to shop detail, engineer and manufacture
boxes surrounding the balconies. Prefabricated cold formed steel framing was
then fabricated off site within a controlled
environment for accurate efficient
results. Added benefits enabled external
cladding to be directly fixed to the framing,
excluding top hats and battens. Labour
and costs were reduced while achieving
the desired architectural finishes with
superior, beneficial and productive results
for the builder. SBS Smart Frame…off site

Creating a truly inspirational
state of the art lobby, featured
some incredible challenges of
detail design and construction.
567 Collins St, a new CBD
office tower boasting some 26
levels of modern architectural
features has become one
of Melbourne’s showpieces.
As the development grew,
designing the lobby became
a key feature as the first
impression for prospective
clients. As a result, an
impressive wave diamond
pattern cranked ceiling was
created, utilising reflective
neon lighting and hidden
services. A variety of designs
were considered involving
coordination
of
recessed
lighting,
acoustical
and
mechanical services. This
challenged many detailers and
architects alike, acknowledging
the stringent criteria set by
the developer and associated
consultants.
Specialised
and efficient solutions were
required, and as pursued,
SBS Group were engaged to
provide alternative smarts,
utilising its vast experience of
pre-fabricated solutions for
complex projects.
Detailed
design commenced, concepts
were workshopped, adjusted
and approved, while keeping
in mind building constraints
and tight budgets. As the
pre-fabricated process got
underway, a specialised clip on
panel system was developed,
incorporating lighting recesses
and more importantly, the ability
to pre-clad the triangulated
frames off site. Cost efficient
Ultra Frame technology and
aluminium
frames
quickly
became manifestly evident
to the construction progress.
For strict and precise quality
control involving over 200
different shapes and over
560 frames, detailed 3D shop
drawings and layouts were
meticulously delivered. As
panel by panel locked into
place, a truly inspirational
ceiling was created and the
hours of detail design and
modelling finally materialised.
In conclusion, SBS Group
appreciated the opportunity
to join the construction team
and be part of solving what
was once a daunting task to
a successful cost effective,
quick and smarter result.
