First Impressions
Most people know how important first impressions are. Before
you even meet a prospective employer, or admissions committee member, they already have an impression of you….from your application, resume, cover letter and/or personal statement. These are all ways that are
used to get a feel for the applicant before meeting him/her in person. A
thoughtful, well worded, organized and grammatically correct resume,
cover letter and/or personal statement tells the person receiving it that
you have good communication skills, care about your work, have the motivation and drive for the profession.
The personal statement is a well-known part of the application to
most health professions programs. If you want your statement to make
an impression on an admissions committee, a laundry list of your past accomplishments will NOT do the trick. Rather than a rehashing of information in other parts of your application, an interesting personal statement should be a story, your story about how you came to the decision to
pursue this particular career.

Likewise, a resume can be more than a summary of your education and employment history. A well-written resume will highlight your
particular skills and show how they can be used by the company you are
applying to. Writing one of these is a process. You develop a resume or
personal statement over time. A good personal statement or resume will
go through several revisions. Even though you may not be applying for a
job or for professional or graduate programs at the moment, it is a good
idea to begin the process now! Your advisor and/or featured in this edition, Melissa Scholten, Coordinator for Undergraduate Career Advising
UMKC Career Services will comment on the professional school personal
statement and the resume. BE SURE TO READ ON!

Your Resume ;
Your First Impression
Whether you are starting your first resume or just finding ways to
share your newest experience, Career Services can help you out.
When creating your resume, there are many important components to resumes and some common guidelines to follow.
Your resume is never done. It’s good to think of your resume
as always being a work in progress. You will always be gaining experience so your resume will always have a need to
be updated.
Make your resume easy to read. Can an employer easily find
your education, relevant work experience, and important
skills on your resume? Is your font basic (Times, Arial, Calibri)? Does your resume make good use of space? Are you
using bullet points to describe experience rather than paragraphs? Is your name and contact information listed clearly
at the top of the page?
Your resume should be concise. Most employers expect a one
page resume from recent grads. There are of course exceptions to this, but as a rule of thumb keep one page in mind
for applications. Use strong action verbs to convey as much
meaning in your bullet points as possible.
Target your resume. Your resume should highlight the experiences that are most important to each position you apply
for. Reordering and grouping your experiences can help
you achieve a targeted resume.
Your resume should not tell the whole story. Remember that
the purpose of a resume is to land you an interview. The
resume should highlight your key qualifications and prompt
an employer to invite you for an interview.
Proofread! Watch for typos and misspellings, especially in
headings. Have a couple of people look over your resume
before submitting it.
Upload your resume in Roo Career Network for a quick review. You
can also request an appointment with one of our career counselors
to discuss your resume and job/internship search.
