INTERNAL / EXTERNAL POSTING Summer Support Worker (Full-time, contract position: June to August 2015) Interval House of Ottawa is a 30-bed emergency home for women and their children fleeing violence. SCOPE OF POSITION Under the supervision of the Residential Program Manager and participating as part of the Residential Program team, Summer Support Worker supports with the children’s summer recreation program at Interval House of Ottawa-Maison Interval d’Ottawa (IHO) and provides immediate and responsive support to women and their children experiencing violence in accordance with the IHO mission and basic beliefs, and the needs of diverse communities. Participation in and promotion of cooperative living is a component of this position. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES In consultation with the Child & Youth Counsellors create a monthly calendar that involves onsite and off-site activities; Supervise the children at IHO who attend the summer recreation program; Maintain a safe a secure environment for children; Maintain cultural diversity and inclusiveness in all programming; Provide coverage of the Residential main office; Provide crisis intervention through telephone and personal contact with women experiencing violence; Ensure that service is accessible to all women by accessing communication and interpretive services as requested; Assess level of risk and executing emergency measures and safety planning as necessary; Assess requests for residential shelter services according to IHO policies and procedures, ensuring alternatives are found if IHO services are not appropriate; Ensure the effective day-to-day operation of services at IHO; Ensure that all health, medical and safety needs of residents are attended to and documented; Assist residents in their adjustment to cooperative living in the shelter and to promote and practice conflict resolution; Provide opportunity for and facilitate peer support among residents. Work closely with staff at IHO to learn, improve and demonstrate new skills related to the position. EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE Must have been a full-time student during the preceding academic year and have the intention to return to school full-time in the upcoming academic year; Education in Child and Youth Worker, Social Service Worker or Bachelor of Social Worker programs; Experience working with children and youth, including children and youth from diverse communities and of diverse abilities; Child and youth intervention skills such as behaviour management, crisis intervention, etc.; 1 Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of community-based model of intervention and feminist principles; Knowledge of violence against women and children who witness abuse issues; Demonstrated crisis intervention and counselling skills; Demonstrated group facilitation skills; Proven conflict resolution skills; Proven ability to work independently, and within a team approach; Strong communication skills; Valid First Aid/CPR certification is an asset. LANGUAGE COMPETENCIES Ability to communication fluently in English – spoken and written; Ability to communicate in another language an asset. COMPUTER COMPETENCIES Word processing – Basic; Database management – Basic; E-mail software – Basic.
