Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and is the leading cause of adult disability. Cognitive
deficits as a result of stroke may have a permanent impact on all activities carried out during a patient’s daily life,
and lead to accelerated physical decline as well as increased falls risks. Cognitive deficits typically include difficulties
with attention, orientation, memory, thought organization, reasoning, and functional problem solving. Cognitive
deficits significantly affect a patient’s ability to successfully and independently complete ADLs, including feeding and
swallowing. Often the patient has limited or no awareness of these deficits and the complications associated with
them. Therefore it is imperative for the rehab professional to be able to recognize these deficits, and to understand
how these deficits will affect a patient’s overall function, completion of ADLs, and discharge plans.
This workshop will provide you with the latest evidence-based knowledge related to cognitive deficits and their
impact on stroke recovery. You will learn how to apply principles of experience-dependent neuroplasticity to select
and implement functional treatment objectives that help your patients to maintain and improve their current levels
of function. This workshop will increase your ability to apply patient-focused interventions that facilitate more
independent completion of language-based ADLs. You will learn about proper documentation of patient goals and
outcomes to optimize reimbursement for skilled services provided.

Anysia J. Ensslen, Ed.D., M.S., CCC-SLP, is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with extensive experience in a
variety of clinical settings, including acute care, outpatient, inpatient rehab, and home care. In three of these settings
she has had the opportunity to serve as a graduate student supervisor, and a CFY supervisor. She is currently employed
at two Luthercare skilled nursing facilities in central Pennsylvania. Dr. Ensslen is also an instructor for Project IMPRESS
(school-based SLP graduate program) at Bloomsburg University. She earned her doctorate in educational leadership
from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Her dissertation research focused on the clinical training and supervision
of speech-language pathology graduate students. She has significant experience working with adults with TBI in an
outpatient work and community re-entry program. In her current work setting, Dr. Ensslen’s caseload consists primarily
of geriatric patients with cognitive-linguistic deficits. Many of these patients will remain in the SNF long-term; however,
others are rehabilitated to return to assisted living, independent community, or home settings.

1. Identify various etiologies of cognitive deficits as they relate to the neuroanatomy of strokes.
2. Define experience-dependent neuroplasticity and its impact on rehabilitation.

4. Explain how cognitive impairments impact feeding, swallowing, and ability to improve overall swallow function.
