The Cemeteries & Crematoria Association of NSW (CCA) invite you to the 14—15 May 2015
Conference being held in Liverpool, NSW.
The conference will commence at 8.30am with arrival tea and coffee followed by the CCA
Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) and Annual General Meeting (AGM). The EGM will provide
an update on a number of important industry issues and the AGM will finalise the CCA committee
members for 2015 and reports on the 2015 financial year will be tabled. A Notice of Meeting and
Agenda for both meetings will be circulated to members closer to the event.
Following the conference theme “ON THE FRONT FOOT”, presentations will be giving by leading
industry experts:

Michelle Blyth and Dr Lloyd Peters: “Data for Cemetery Intelligence”.
Michelle Blyth and Dr Lloyd Peters will provide an overview of demographics and the relevance
for the cemetery sector, including the following:148,000 Australians die each year, including about 47,000 in NSW and about 37,000 in
Victoria. New South Wales has a population of 7.63mil or 32% of the Australian population.
The population growth is 9.1% and the total fertility rate is 1.94%.
Dr Lloyd and Michelle’s combined presentation will feature important statistical data that will
require your attention.

Dr Lloyd is a Business Analyst for the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) (Vic)
within the Customer and Industry Intelligence department. SMCT is a not-for-profit organisation
administering eight cemeteries in the southern metropolitan Melbourne region. Since joining
SMCT, Dr Lloyd has been very active in developing predictive mathematical models, which has
led to deep insights in the industry.
Dr Lloyd’s previous experience includes research in pure mathematics at Monash University,
the University of Cape Town and the CSIRO (Australia). He has received a B.Sc, B.Sc (Hons)
and a Ph.D. in pure mathematics from Monash University. He has also published an article in
the Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society and has submitted another to the Cambridge
Philosophical Society.
Michelle Blyth is currently the General Manager, Customer and Industry Intelligence with the
SMCT. She has been at SMCT since February 2012 and her portfolio includes research,
consumer insights and community engagement.
Michelle has a senior management background in client services with over 20 years of
experience. She has worked in the private and public sectors including the manufacturing,
transport and exhibition industries. With an accounting degree, Michelle has extensive
experience in management and administration, information technology and has completed both
her Bachelor of Commerce and her Masters of Business Administration at Deakin University.
She currently holds the appointment as Secretary of Committee of Management of the
Cemeteries and Crematoria Association of Victoria (CCAV). The CCAV is an industry body for
the cemeteries and crematoria industry in Victoria and participates on the Funeral Industry
Round Table with the Department of Consumer Affairs which advises the Minister on matters
relating to the provision of funeral services.

Vera Visevic: “Understanding the Cemeteries & Crematoria Act 2013”. Back by popular
demand. Vera spoke and led discussion at the November 2014 Albury Conference on the
interpretation of the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2013. This follow-up presentation will
assist members in their understanding and interpretation of the Act.

Vera is a partner at Mills Oakley Lawyers, specialising in not-for-profit law and property law.
Vera sits on a number of Boards and committees including the Catholic Cemeteries Board,
where she was appointed a Governor in February 2007. Vera has been a keynote speaker at a
number of CCA conferences.

Graham Evans: “Using a positive reporting culture to achieve legal compliance”.
Graham’s presentation will cover the risk for organisations of not moving to a workplace culture
where making reports of incidents, situations, observed events will leave them exposed to
prosecution and claims under a growing number of statutory provisions. These provisions
include:





Work health & safety issues
Bullying issues
Harassment and discrimination
Fraud and misconduct
Workers compensation.
Using a number of relevant case studies, Graham will provide an eye opening of this often
overlooked area and provide plenty of time for questions.
Graham, Legal Practitioner Director, AFEI Legal Pty Ltd, has practiced in the area of
employment for over 30 years and assisted thousands of employers over that time to deal with
the complexities of the Australian workplace relations system. His expertise has been
recognised by the Law Society of NSW who have conferred him status as an Accredited
Specialist in Employment and Industrial Law. Graham is also on the panel of accredited
workplace mediators with the Law Society of NSW, along with the NSW District Court.

Alistair Shaw: “Infection Control, Bearing the Responsibility”. Alistair’s presentation
will be based around infection control:



What is it?
What are our responsibilities to it?
How will the use of personal protective equipment and other strategies help us to avoid
cross contamination within the work place?
Having been an embalmer and Funeral Director for more than 30 years who is actively involved
in industry training, advice and technical support, Alistair is well qualified to discuss the
relevance of infection control within the modern day cemetery and crematorium setting. Alistair
is with Hyqual Australia, a family owned company manufacturing funeral supplies and
accessories for the Australian funeral industry.

Craig Lapsley: “Involvement of Cemeteries and Crematoria during a Pandemic”.
Craig Lapsley will speak on the involvement of a cemetery or crematoria during a pandemic
situation in Victoria.
Craig is the Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner (EMC). He is Victoria’s first EMC
with legislated control over all major emergencies in the State of Victoria.
Craig has enjoyed a career in the Australian emergency management sector for more than 30
years.
As Victoria’s first EMC, Craig believes the shift to an “all hazards, all emergencies” approach to
emergency management is the next logical step in ensuring a systematic and coordinated
approach before, during and after major emergencies.
It is also an opportunity for the alignment of strategy, planning and investment across multiple
agencies, to champion unified information systems, an organisational culture that supports
information sharing, and a sharp and deliberate focus on better decision making with the
community as a central partner in emergency management.

monuments nor artificial wreaths or tributes. The field is minimally maintained to encourage
growth, protect trees and wildlife and avoids the use of horticultural chemicals to create a selfsustaining eco-system.
The natural beauty of the landscape is your lasting memorial. Graves are unmarked, but each
is mapped and surveyed using GPS technology to accurately record locations for future visits.
A central commemorative feature in sandstone at the entrance to the field records the names of
those interred and provides a place for reflection for families.

Liverpool Cemetery and Crematorium: The imposing new St Padre Pio Garden
Mausoleum, is anchored in the south east corner of Liverpool Cemetery, and the heart of the
Liverpool community.
The L-shaped design embraces a lovely landscaped burial lawn on the forecourt. The tall
vertical white panels will have bronze plaques attached depicting the Way of the Cross. The
panels lead from the buildings northern most point to an intimate chapel for services.
The chapel features a skylight over the cross that allows daylight to reflect on the curved
polished walls, whilst reminding us of Christ’s ascension to heaven. A bronze statue of St
Padre Pio, depicted with his bandaged hands raised to remind us of his stigmata, is located at
the building entrance.
Designed to set a new benchmark in above ground burial innovation, Catholic Cemeteries &
Crematoria and Ignite Architects have created this light filled, environmentally sustainable
building. This stylish garden mausoleum offers a range of beautifully appointed crypts,
including family vaults and a range of configurations to choose from on each level. The upper
levels are accessible by lift, pedestrian ramps and stairs. The crypt capellas provide views over
the cemetery, and the landscaped lawns create a beautiful setting.
