Beauty I and the Beast t is an exciting thing to be able to sit in a sound booth and watch 70 students take part in what was a fantastic musical. Between the ushers, band members and back stage crew, our students showcased their ability to work as a TEAM and take pride in what they have achieved. The community shouldn’t go without praise. What an excellent display of community coming together, with two night performances a sell out and strong attendance at our Matinee performance on Saturday. Thank you for your support of our students. The week ended with our best performance, and was topped off with a fantastic dedication from our school captains Kate and Trae, thanking those who have put their heart into this production. Highest appreciation to Miss Jenna Griffiths, Mrs Helen Hubbard and Mr Peter Gerke whose expertise enrich the lives of the students who participate in The Arts and in extra-curricular activities within our school. I was particularly impressed by their ability to maintain our student’s educational outcomes within their subject areas whilst creating the masterpiece on stage. Finally, to our students who have spent many hours working hard in rehearsals and at home. Their strong performances will ensure Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will forever be a positive memory for us all. Mr Brian Shoesmith Director 14 May 2015 - Issue 7 From the Principal D ear Parents, students, staff and community supporters This past week has seen two excellent whole-school activities take place that have generated a lot of interest across our wider community: Our school Cross Country was held on Tuesday and it was a great event that provided a good physical challenge for students and some staff. Some changes were introduced to the course this year and the decision to have all of the school attend proved successful, with an increased presence of teamwork on display. Congratulations to our convenor, Mr Marcus Weller, for his great organisation, the HPE staff, and also to all of the staff, students and parents who supported this event. Our school musical, Beauty and the Beast, proved to be an outstanding success last weekend. The teamwork on display by the cast, crew, parents, staff and wider community was nothing short of inspiring. I feel very proud of the significant contribution made by many people within our school and wider community to ensure that this production would be ‘one to remember’. Congratulations to all of the staff and students involved in the production. Their ongoing commitment ensured that the highest standard of performance would be achieved and they have forged many wonderful memories in the hearts and minds of the cast, crew and audience. Congratulations to Mr Brian Shoesmith (Director), Mr Peter Gerke (Producer), Mrs Helen Hubbard (Music Director), Miss Jenna Griffiths (Choreographer) and to all of the students, staff, parents, families and community friends for making this an outstanding event. Staffing Last week we farewelled two of our non-teaching staff – Mrs Rebecca Clarke (Administrative Assistant) and Miss Grace Coverdale (Cleaner / Teacher-Aide). I would like to sincerely thank both of these staff members for the significant contribution that they made to our school during their time with us. Our Guidance Officer, Mrs Sandra Sytsma, will remain on extended Leave for the remainder of the term. Student Expectations letter to parents, students, families and staff All families should have received a letter last week outlining the school’s focus on maintaining high standards across our school community. The letter seeks the support of all parents and families in keeping students focused on: learning for a happy and productive future, meeting their commitments and achieving their best. Anyone who did not receive a letter is asked to contact the school office so that one can be provided to you. Thank you all in anticipation of your support as we continue to support our students to get the most out of their education. Chinchilla SHS 2015 Attendance minimum target for each student – 92% Every lesson, every day, counts at Chinchilla State High School. We expect that all students will attend every day unless they are too sick to attend. Any absences should be supported with a note from parents or a phone call to the School Office. The progressive Whole School Attendance Data for week 3 Term 2 was 87.6%, which is approximately 2% below where we were last fortnight and further from our target of a 92% minimum attendance for each student. We will continue to work with our students and families to focus on improving these figures in Term 2. In line with our letter on ‘expectations for students’ to our families, we will be addressing students with unjustified low levels of attendance and enrolment processes may follow. • 90% attendance = 1 day off/fortnight • 80% attendance = 1 day off/week Best wishes to all of our students, families, staff and many supporters in the wider community. Interact Clubs operate under Rotary and carry out two service projects a year: one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. In the last week of Term 1, the Interact Club organised their community service project: an Easter egg drive within the school. A huge thank you to all of the students and families who contributed to this worthy cause. We collected over 900 Easter eggs, which were delivered to 'Illoura Village' when the students went to visit and chat with the residents. This was a great morning with residents and students alike thoroughly enjoying meeting one another and sharing stories. With such an overwhelming response to our Easter egg drive, we were also able to deliver boxes of Easter eggs to the Chinchilla Hospital, Anglicare, Blue Care and other organisations around the town who were all very appreciative of the gesture. Interact students were again out and about assisting the local community during the town’s ANZAC day service. Several students who marched with the Interact Club were then responsible for the collection on behalf of Legacy and represented both the Club and School extremely well. Any students who would like to join Interact are encouraged to come along to our next meeting, which will be held on Thursday 7 May. Listen out for notices for more details! Keely Title: Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl Author: Anne Frank Genre: Autobiography Difficulty: Medium Availability: School and town libraries, in stores and online Rating: 4 out of 5 apples (delicious) What is the book about? The story is written from a young girl’s perspective and describes how she and her family hide in order to avoid German capture during World War II. Where and when is the book set? The book is set in Holland in 1942, during the second World War. Did you enjoy the book? Yes, I enjoyed the book. It was interesting to read about how Anne and her family lived in hiding for two years. I also learnt a lot about the horrors inflicted on Jewish people by the Nazis during that time. Can you relate to the protagonist and their plight? I can’t really relate to Anne as what she and her family endured is very different to how we live here in Australia. They were cut off from the outside world for years, facing hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined spaces and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. I’m thankful that we are so different in that respect. Did you know anything about the topic before you read the book? I only knew a little bit about the war, but I didn’t know much about the Holocaust and the unimaginable horror faced by Jews during that time. Who would you recommend this book to? I would recommend this book to senior students or younger students with a keen interest in reading. Booked for Lunch runs fortnightly (Thursday, first break) and is open to staff and students alike. It’s a great way to meet new people and read new books, all while indulging over culinary delights. Are you booked for lunch? See Miss Taylor in GSF1 for more information. Alisha Rides to Victory Black Out Y T ear 7 student Alisha competed last Friday 8 May at the Darling Downs and South-West Inter-school Regional Championship in Dalby. Against fierce competition, Alisha secured a first and second place in the Senior Elementary Dressage levels 3:1 and 3:2 tests. Alisha's percentage scores over both tests gained her the 2015 Senior Elementary Overall Champion title, winning a saddle cloth, ribbon and a trophy for Chinchilla State High School Equestrian Team. Alisha competed against some of the best schools in the region. Mrs Ann Griffiths VET Coordinator he domination of Black House has continued with a strong performance in the recently held Inter House Cross Country Carnival. This year the event was convened at the school Agricultural Farm, in some unseasonably hot conditions for running. It was great to see the majority of our student’s line up to support their house on the day. As with the majority of previous carnivals the efforts put in by the house as a whole made the difference in the final results. This year, it was Black House that put in the greatest effort. They were duly rewarded with victory edging out a determined Atkins House. Congratulations to all students who competed on the day. A special mention must be made of the students who were crowned Age Champions. Well Done!
