Zoie General Manager 2 NURSING NEWS Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month: “IBS is a chr onic, often debilitating, functional gastrointestinal disorder with symptoms that include abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel behaviours. These are constipation and/or diarrhea, or alternating between the two stool consistency extremes. IBS is a functional disorder, in that the function or movement of the bowel is not quite right. There are no medical tests to confirm or rule out a diagnosis and yet it is the most common gastrointestinal condition worldwide and the most common disorder presented by patients consulting a gastrointestinal specialist (gastroenterologist). IBS affects an estimated 13-20% of Canadians at any given time, depending on which criteria researchers use to assess symptoms. The lifetime risk for a Canadian to develop IBS is 30%. IBS can begin in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood and can resolve unexpectedly for periods throughout an individual’s lifespan, recurring at any age. In Canada and most Western nations, IBS seems to arise significantly more frequently in women than in men, but the reason for this remains unclear.” http://www.badgut.org/information-centre/a-z-digestivetopics/irritable-bowel-syndrome/ Earth Day: April 22, 2015 “Celebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day is the largest environmental event in the world. More than six million Canadians—including nearly every school-aged child— participate in an Earth Day activity in their communities. We partner with and support hundreds of organizations across the country, as they engage Canadians in annual celebrations of this special day. Founded in 1990, Earth Day Canada is a national environmental charity. We offer free, year-round, award-winning programs to educate and inspire Canadians of all ages, backgrounds and sectors to reach local environmental solutions. Our mission is to foster and celebrate environmental respect, action and behaviour change that lessens our impact on the earth.” http:// earthday2015.ca/about/ Health Clinic’s coming up Onsite specialists vision appointments April 2, 2015 Direct Dentistry dental clinic May 5, 2015 (see flyer attached) To sign up for any clinic appointments, please contact Megan Newbury, DNC, at extension 805, or email [email protected] Coming soon….. A Message from Chaplains Corner Spring has officially arrived, or so says the calendar. Despite the cold weather lingering there are signs that spring is creeping its way in ever so softly. If you take the time to observe the world around you especially outside, you will see the Canadian Geese returning and soon little goslings’ will follow suit. As the snow has receded the grass still brown will begin to turn a luscious green color, buds on the trees will begin to sprout, TABLE OF CONTENTS as with the perennials in the surrounding gardens. In this silence we can see nature come back to life, all of which reminds us of the seasons of our lives. What a wonder we are as human beings. We move from conception, through birth, infancy, childhood, teens, adulthood, parenthood, possibly grandparenthood, and our senior years. No doubt as you watch those who are younger, a part of you remembers what it was to be a certain age. As you take time this spring to be silent and observe, may you recall that which brought you joy throughout your life and in your relationships. Treasure the blessings that surround you now.
