Dear Summit Community,
Thank you for your participation in the exciting process of transforming our school into an
innovative state-of-the-art 21st century learning facility which will meet our current and future
needs. We are enjoying a productive partnership with Fielding Nair International, known for its
innovative school design practices, and with Cuningham Group, whose knowledge of our school
building and the local construction environment is invaluable. Boulder Valley School District has
also hired FNI as the primary design consultants for the school bond district-wide.
We have learned a great deal in the planning process. With each step, we follow one simple
guideline: “instruction is guiding construction”. Every day, our incredible teachers engage
students in a variety of effective learning strategies including: teacher-directed instruction,
student-directed learning, projects, inquiry, peer learning, hands on creation, critical thinking,
experimentation, digital learning, field studies, drawing, research, and much more. We also use
a variety learning assessments.
Viewing our new building concept, it is helpful to understand that 21st century learning starts
with core academics connected to global themes like environmental ethics. It incorporates
learning and innovation skills including creativity and critical thinking. It includes information and
technology skills including media literacy and digital citizenship. It addresses life and career
skills including flexibility, resilience, leadership, and responsibility.
We have examined our practices, assumptions, and vision concerning 21st century learning and
innovative school design. Some people equate innovative learning spaces to open classrooms
popular in the 70’s or expect they mirror the corporate offices of Google. FNI has shown us how
the intentional design of learning communities creates structure and space that supports
multiple modalities of learning and provides a catalyst for active, student-centered engagement
and teacher-directed learning.
We’ve read books and articles to solidify our learning, including two FNI books: Blueprint for
Tomorrow and The Language of School Design. We also read Susan Cain’s bestseller Quiet:
The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. Mr. Teasdale’s research has shown
that many of our students and faculty tend to be introverts. This book challenges the assumption
that creativity and innovation only improve through collaboration and group work.
I am pleased and excited with the work we have done thus far. I invite you to think critically
about our work and share your opinions with us so we can make this project the best that it can
be. Please note the presentation illustrates our primary Proposed Plan on page 20, but also
references an Alternate Plan on page 21 which is under consideration but currently exceeds our
budget. Thank you for your support and input.
Sincerely,
Adam

Program
Heart/Café Commons
The new central feature of the school would be a commons area
which would be the hub of many activities. A portion of this area
near the kitchen would be reserved for cafeteria tables at lunch
time. The rest of the area would be a center for collaborative
learning and community partnership. We would engage in many of
our community-related learning activities in this space such as
science fair, history day and open enrollment meetings

Administrator/Educator Studio
The administration block houses all faculty resources and offices,
while providing reception services. The location of these spaces
adjacent to the main entrance serves as a secure checkpoint for
visitors; as well as being centrally located within the entire facility.
This location serves as a resource to both teachers and students.

Performance/Gathering/Exhibit Hall
The Performance/Gathering Hall is a one-of-a-kind space that
combines the functions of a traditional performance hall with an
informal gathering space. By blending a seating platform with an
informal gathering stair, the space can be fully transformed from
one setting to the other.

Music Room
The Music Room is a large classroom-type space with all the
amenities for a successful music class. There is plenty of room for
students and instruments, used in either an instructional setup or
small group practice. This space is adjacent to the shared Stage
which can be taken advantage of for practice and live
performances.
The Practice Rooms supplement the Music Room with small
group room spaces. Students can take advantage of these rooms
to break away from the larger environment of the Music Room to
practice individually or in a small group. These spaces perform
acoustically well and are more tailored for a musical setting.

Maker Space
The Maker Space is a place for doing. This should be an active,
engaging, challenging, and creative space for students and
teachers to research and explore through the art of making.
Resources such as hand tools, technology, materials, etc. provide
students with the necessities to learn by doing hands-on projects.
This space is adjacent to the Art Studio for more area space and
enhanced collaboration on projects.

Art/Design Studio
The Art Studio is a place to get messy and express yourself
through creativity. This space has the resources to create projects
with multiple media, and is adjacent to the Maker Space for even
more resources. This space can open up to the Maker Space for
more area space and enhanced collaboration on projects.

Learning Community Commons
The Learning Community Commons houses many different
modalities of learning throughout the day. Whether it’s serving as
a classroom breakout space, transitional space, full class
instructional space, or individual and small group learning space,
the commons is always used. Having a common area helps
facilitate the learning process in every space of the school without
having wasted space just for traveling from one place to another.

Learning Studio
The Learning Studio replaces the typical classroom space by
adding more flexibility, function, and aesthetic. Generally around
the same size as a classroom, the Learning Studio can break out
to a common space for even more instruction and work space.
Students can work in many different group variations inside and
out of the Learning Studio, which helps meet each students’
learning needs to help them grow and learn more efficiently.

Seminar Room
The Seminar Room starts to break down the traditional
classroom into a space that serves up to half a class of
students. These students can work as one large group or
collaborate in a couple smaller groups. Seminar Rooms
usually have supplemental technology to accommodate
distance learning, conference calls, and small group
presentations and collaborations.

Small Group Room
The Small Group Room also becomes a breakdown of the
traditional classroom. Instead of looking for students to work in
small groups or individually in a noisy classroom, students can
break out of the Learning Studio to a Small Group Room for
individual reflection or small group collaboration in a more
conducive setting. These spaces have collaborative furniture and
technology to accommodate different learning tasks given to
students.
