SPOTLIGHT ON GRADE 5
MAY the Fun Begin! The month of May brings opportunities and challenges for 5 th
graders at St. Barnabas School.
8:30 - 8th Grade Last
All School Mass
Students in 5th grade wrapped up the month of April by hosting their annual Wax Museum of American heroes. Each student dressed up to look like an American Hero and
Volunteer Brunch
recited a small speech to visitors who wished to learn about his or her person. The
following Mass
students had a blast!

1:30 - 8th Grade
Talent Show
Once the month of May began, the 5th graders, along with the rest of the school, celebrated May Crowning with the crowning of Mary. Students honored and praised Mary
on that special day.

Retirement Reception
for Mrs. Schmidt, Mrs.
Jaffe, & Mrs. Beckham
On May 8th, the 5th graders went on an overnight field trip to CYO Camp Rancho
Framasa. They learned about nature and taking care of God’s creation. Students focused on prayer and faith while also having the time of their lives. One student remarked (30 minutes into the trip), “This is the best trip of my life!”
On May 12th, the 5th graders presented their mini-musical “Shh! We’re Writing the
May 22
Constitution”. They wore red, white, and blue, and sang patriotic songs. This miniGrades 4-6
musical chronicles the hot summer of 1787 where fifty-five delegates from thirteen
Tour de France
states huddled together in the strictest secrecy in Philadelphia to draw up the constitution of the United States! The students worked long and hard on it, and had a pheLast Day for 8th Gr. nomenal time!
and PreK
Each year the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders bring their bikes to school for Tour de France.
8th Grade Picnic
Students participate in a day full of fun activities while learning about bike safety,
staying active and a few things about the country of France along the way. They will

celebrate 102 years of the famous Tour de France on Friday, May 22 nd.
Memorial Day
NO SCHOOL
On May 28th, the 5th graders along with grades KN-6 will participate in Field Day.
Again, students will participate in activities outside to help remind them to stay active
over summer vacation. It is also an opportunity for students to be rewarded for all the
hard work they have done throughout the year.
Fifth grade has been fun for the students and teachers, especially during the month of
May. Now students can enjoy summer and begin looking forward to the new school
year and the new opportunities that will welcome them in 6th grade!

UPDATE: SGO $500 Scholarship ~ Institute for Quality Education
The URL to apply for the SGO scholarship is available online at: sgo.i4qed.org/apply
When households arrive at this link they will be asked to first ‘Create an Account’.
Once the household account is created, households will have access to their portal. Before creating a new application, households ought to first add each child(ren) for
whom they will be submitting a scholarship application. Once all the applicable children
have been entered, the household will then click ‘New Application’. Each child that is
eligible for a scholarship must have their separate application. Households will need to
create a new application every academic year. This information is saved in the household’s portal and can be revised for future applications. Although the application is
electronic, the documentation cannot be uploaded to the software. Please send income verification documentation to the attention of Angela Boyle. Use the graphic below as a guideline. ST.
BARNABAS
CATHOLIC
SCHOOL
IMPORTANT: Indianapolis Public Library –
St. Barnabas Branch Information
As the school year will be coming to an end soon, we wanted to communicate some important information
pertaining to the Indianapolis Public Library books ordered and picked up at the St. Barnabas School
branch.
All current library books on loan should have been returned to the school library as of May 15th. If your child
has not returned their book(s), please have them do so as soon as possible.
At this time, please do not place any more book requests for delivery to the St. Barnabas branch. If you have
already placed a request and it does not arrive at our branch by the end of the school year, we encourage
you to log into your account and change the pickup location to another branch (for example, the Southport
branch). Please remember, the public library charges $2 for failure to pick up holds. If you will be traveling,
you may want to suspend the hold until August when school is back in session or cancel the hold altogether.
Please be sure to log into your child’s account to see what books are currently on loan to ensure they are
returned to our school library. Our school library will be closed as of May 18th. If a reserved book arrives
after May 18th, the student will be notified by their teacher. If your child still has outstanding books, they
will be allowed to return them to our branch until May 26th. The due date extension is to accommodate
those who are just now receiving their books. We still ask that books are returned as soon as possible in
order for our library staff to complete our close-out by the end of the school year. Books should only be
returned to another library branch as a last resort.
We encourage you to continue to use the wonderful resources of the Indianapolis Public
Library over the
summer. When ordering a book over the summer, please select another branch for your pick up location on
the “Request Confirmation” screen. Please do not change your default pickup location on your profile. We
need St. Barnabas to remain your default location for the ease of ordering books once school resumes in
the fall. Please
remember that the public library branches will enforce overdue fines so please monitor
your due dates.
We would like to thank you for all for your enthusiasm and use of our new library branch. If you have any
questions, please contact Lisa Feltz at [email protected].

HONORING OUR RETIREES
Three teachers are celebrating a combined 109 years of teaching at St. Barnabas School! Stop in and show
your appreciation and good wishes for Mrs. Jaffe, Mrs. Schmidt, and Mrs. Beckham as they complete their
teaching careers at St. Barnabas.
A reception will be held in their honor on Thursday, May 21 from 3:30-5:30 in the Parish Hall. Share a favorite remembrance and thank these beautiful ladies for their dedication to our children and to their profession.
VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION BRUNCH
We appreciate all our volunteers have done for our students and our
school this year. Please join us for Mass on Wednesday, May 20th at
8:30 and enjoy brunch immediately following the Mass. RSVP to
Denise Wilson at [email protected]. THANK YOU!
Special thanks goes to Lisa Feltz for her tireless sharing of her time, talent, and treasure in getting the St. Barnabas branch of the IndianapolisMarion County Public Library up and going. She’s spent lots of extra
hours in taking care of the technology requirements, communication,
securing and training of volunteers, and advertising of our new system!
I know she’ll be rounding up volunteers for some conversion work that needs to take place this summer.
Thanks to all of our library volunteers who have made it possible for our students to READ MORE BOOKS!
