Park Avenue Community School Newsletter 395 Eighth Street, Nanaimo, BC V9R 1A9 Ph. 2507545591 Fax 2507545818 PRINCIPAL: SECRETARY: Mr. Robbie Dhillon May 2015 Mrs. Sharon Binng & Mrs. Marina Lockhart FROM THE OFFICE Dear Parents: As we make our way through May, our school community shifts into high gear readying for numerous end of year preparations. Enhancement trips are being planned by many teachers right now and please note some of these may leave before the regular start of school day, and possibly end afterwards. Please keep a close eye on the permission slips just in case your child is to be at school before the regular start of the day. Reminders, as always, will come out on our email list serve. We have started our planning for next school year. There is more information in this newsletter; I would encourage you to keep reading. We are also expecting three student teachers, who will be here for three weeks, starting on May 19th. Ms. Baker, Ms. Zieber and Ms. Gurr will be sponsoring these student teachers, who are all from Switzerland. Thanks, as always, to members of our PAC for their continued contributions to the school. Your help and assistance is appreciated by the staff, students Park Avenue community. Yours truly, Mr. Robbie Dhillon Principal http://schoolsweb.sd68.bc.ca/parkave/ assists us in determining our numbers and school organization for the upcoming school year. Please also ensure you have registered your child at your new catchment area school as well. If you know of a family moving into our school community (or has already moved in), encourage them to come in to register before June 15 as this is the district deadline for guaranteed placement in our school. After that date, we can still accept students from within our community providing we have room for them, but we may not be able to confirm this until September. SCHOOL DRESS CODE As the warmer weather approaches I thought it would be important to remind everyone about the dress code. In accordance with School District 68, we expect students to dress in a manner that is appropriate and conducive to a positive and safe working and learning environment. Appropriate dress is safe and: Free of any reference to alcohol, drugs, gangs, hate, obscenity, profanity, racism/discrimination, sex or violence; Not disturbing or distracting to others (undergarments are fully covered, tops meet bottoms at the waist, no spaghetti straps, tube tops or backless tops and skirts and shorts are at least a hand-width below the buttocks. Your cooperation greatly PARENTAL REQUESTS FOR STUDENT PLACEMENT 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR We are in the process of planning the next academic year. It is important you trust the teachers and administration to build classes which suit the students’ both academic and social needs. We take a lot of care in doing classroom composition for each grade. We make up each class list in a way that maximizes the quality of teaching and learning conditions for all students. The classroom composition for each grade has to reflect the acceptance of all individuals within an inclusive school as we attempt to provide appropriate educational programming to all children. If you have specific educational reasons/concerns you would like us to consider about your child, please contact Mr. Dhillon (in writing) as soon as possible, but no later than May 25th. We do consider these requests along with all other pertinent information provided by classroom teachers and support staff. Please note your request will be considered but we do not guarantee it can be honored. It does become, however, an important part of our planning process. As teachers may change schools and grade groupings are dependent on our enrolment numbers and balancing learning needs, please describe optimal learning environments without referring to specific teachers. We are not able to take requests for individual teachers. TENTATIVE TEACHER STAFFING FOR 2015-2016 The tentative organization for next year appears below. I must stress that the organization outlined below may change depending on movement of students into and out of the community during the summer and final postings of teachers. A shift of a few students from one age level to another can have an impact on the structure of several classes. You can help us by letting us know if there are any families out there who plan to move out of our community or move into our community during the summer. Give us a call 2507545591 or send a note if you have some information to share. Principal Mr. R.
