He has been called the most powerful
Chinese leader since Deng Xiaoping
and the most authoritative since Mao
Zedong. His ambitious reform strategy,
including a sharp crackdown on
corruption, has made not only
domestic, but international news. The
Chinese people affectionately refer to
him as Xi Dada or Big Uncle Xi and
Westerners are naturally curious about
how he rules. There is no doubt,
President Xi Jinping is one of the most
influential leaders of our time; but who
is the man behind the headlines and
what do his policies mean for China
and its international strategy?
Professor Willy Lam is an adjunct
professor in the history department and the
Center for China Studies, Chinese
University of Hong Kong. He is a leading
academic on the topic of President Xi. You
can find a number of his articles in Foreign
Policy. Professor Lam will be selling and
signing his newly-released book,
'Chinese Politics in the Era of Xi
Jinping: Renaissance, Reform or
Retrogression?’ after the China
Briefing. To pre-order the book, fill out
the order form or email Flavia Watkins.

The Confucius Institute
at the University of
Adelaide promotes the
learning of Chinese
language and culture
and a broader and
more informed
understanding of China,
both across South
Australia and beyond.
The Confucius Institute was officially
launched in March 2007 by the then Federal
Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon.
Alexander Downer.
The establishment of the Confucius Institute
with Shandong University consolidates
longstanding ties with the University of
Adelaide and coincides with the twentieth
anniversary of the Sister State relationship
between South Australia and Shandong
Province.
Through our programs and activities, we
seek to build understanding of Chinese
culture among any interested groups,
increase
China knowledge generally, strengthen
language teaching and help Australians to
build or strengthen their economic and
business links with China.
