11 May 2009 ISSN 0795-3089 Vol 4 No. 20 President Yar'Adua Challenges African Universities on Sustainable Development c resident Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, GCFR has urged African Universities to live up to expectations by driving development in the Continent through research and inventions. He issued the challenge when declaring open the 12th Conference of the Association of African Universities (AAU) on Monday, 4th May 2009. The week-long Conference was co-hosted by the University of Ilorin and the University of Abuja at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. The President, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Hajiya Aisha J. Dukku, stressed that Universities in Africa had a duty to stimulate intellectual debate on how to move the region forward and that unless higher institutions played their expected pivotal role by generating innovative ideas, the Continent might not meet the demands of development on the global scene. He however admitted that, for this to be achieved, there must be a significant and rapid investment in higher education to properly equip these universities to attain acceptable standards of excellence. He urged African universities to consider the possibilities of networking in research and pedagogy as no African university can go it alone to address most of the problems afflicting the continent. According to President Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua President Federal Republic of Nigeria Yar'Adua, Nigeria had taken the lead by making education a core component of his administration's 7-Point Agenda knowing that it was the only means of pursuing and sustaining equitable development. In his remarks, Professor Njabulo Ndabele, President of the AAU, said that Nigeria was hosting the Conference for the second time since the establishment of the Organization in 1967, the first being in 1990 in Ibadan. He explained that the Conference theme "Sustainable Development in Africa: The Role of Higher Education" was apt and that higher education could play a major role in promoting sustainability in Africa. He added that discussions and presentations at the Conference would not only challenge African universities to be more active in fostering teaching and learning for sustainable development, but also engage them in nurturing linkages and exchanges towards producing answers to the continent's debilitating problems. Hajiya Aisha J. Dukku Minister of State for Education The Vice-Chancellor, University of Abuja, Professor Nuhu Yaqub and the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, in their welcome message expressed appreciation for the honour and privilege to host the 12th AAU Conference. Professor Yaqub, who read the message on behalf of the host universities, observed that the Conference offered a unique opportunity for Nigerian universities to interact with those from other parts of Africa, share experiences and learn best practices from other countries. The Objective of the Conference was to address the mandate of higher education institutions regarding teaching and learning, research and community service including greening the campuses as they relate to sustainable development in Africa. The Conference was executed in two parts: i. The AAU Business Session that concentrated on AAU issues such as reports on the Association’s 4 year programmes, deliberations on the next 4 year programmes leading to another General Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Page 2 Conference, and elections to the Executive Board; and (ii) The Scientific session, the Conference of Rectors, Vice-Chancellors and Presidents of African Universities (COREVIP) that dealt with the presentation of papers on the Conference theme. Goodwill messages were delivered by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero, the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), African Development Bank (ADB), Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), Association of Commonwealth Professor Njabulo Ndabele, Universities (ACU) and Global University AAU President Network for Innovation (GUNI) Africa.
