SUFFOLK COUNTY POLICE ASIAN JADE SOCIETY NEWSLETTER April 2015 2015 SUFFOLK COUNTY ASIAN ADVISORY BOARD HONOREE 2015 Honoree Highly Accomplished Asian American Professional Detective Fred Hom Suffolk County Police Department and Foundling Father of the Suffolk County Asian Jade Society Suffolk County Police Detective Fred Hom is a first generation born Asian American. His father, Fred Hom Sr. immigrated from China and his mother, Barbara Hom, is of Irish, Swiss, and American Indian decent. Fred was born in Brooklyn, New York and shortly after, his family decided to make the move to Long Island and settling in Northport. In 1985, Fred Hom became the first Asian American police officer to be hired by the Suffolk County Police Department. He began his career in the Third Precinct patrolling the hamlets of Central Islip and Brentwood, which was one of the busiest areas in Suffolk County at that time. His hard work didn’t go unnoticed. In 1987, he was transferred to the Narcotics Squad and began working on numerous cases involving Asian drug gangs. He went undercover and made numerous drugs buys leading to countless arrests. In 1990, he was promoted to Detective. He worked on a case with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and was successful in infiltrating one of the most dangerous drug gangs of that time. It resulted in the purchase of kilos of cocaine and the seizure of numerous automatic weapons. In 1995, he was transferred to the US Customs Task Force where he now serves as its longest standing member. Detective Fred Hom has dedicated 30 years of his career to the citizens of Suffolk County. He has investigated hundreds of cases on the local, national and international levels which resulted in hundreds of arrests and seized property. Safety in the streets in Suffolk County is a direct result of Detective Fred Hom’s commitment to his profession. In 2015, Detective Fred Hom became a founding member of the Suffolk County Police Asian Jade Society. He serves to foster relations between Asian American law enforcement officers and the communities in which they serve. Today, he continues to serve in the capacity of Detective, protecting the citizens of Suffolk County, and a mentor between Asian American police officers and the Suffolk County Police Department. 7th Annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration May 9, 2015 SUNY Stony Brook, Charles B. SUFFOLK COUNTY POLICE ASIAN JADE SOCIETY April 2015 NEWSLETTER Recruitment The Suffolk County Police Asian Jade Society Board set out to Queens College in efforts to recruit Asian Americans to apply for the Suffolk County Police exam being held on June 13, 2015. Police Officers Jeffrey Fong of the 2nd Precinct, Edwin Hugh of the 6th Precinct, and Thomas Joy of the Highway Patrol Bureau, along with 2015 SCAAB honoree Detective Fred Hom, devoted their time to inform Asian Americans of the benefits of becoming a Suffolk County Police Officer and the expectations required by the Suffolk County Police Department. Many potential applicants were very receptive to the recruitment efforts. Some have never heard of Suffolk County police, but when advised of the salary and the benefits the Suffolk County Police Department had to offer, they were astounded. We would like to thank Queens College Campus Security for welcoming us to their campus upon our arrival and allowing us to interact with their student body.
