2015 Faith Leaders Institute
ABOUT THE 2015 INSTITUTE
The USC Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement is currently recruiting up to 50 leaders from faith-based nonprofit organizations to participate in the
Faith Leaders Institute, a capacity building and leadership transformation program. The institute is made possible with grant support from the California Endowment. Topics include leadership, community and organizational assessment,
developing a vision for changing communities, community development, civic
engagement, governance, stemming youth violence, fundraising, and financial
literacy.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
There are no formal academic requirements for program participation, but applicants must represent organizations that meet the following requirements:
Organizations should have an interest in community programs such as job
training and development, small business, education, youth development,
health, housing, re-entry or civic engagement
Organizations must have two or more years of operation
Organizations must have between two and ten employees
Organizations must have an annual budget of at least $100,000
Multiethnic and multi-faith organizations are encouraged to apply
Interested organizations must be located in one of the following four geographical neighborhoods:
Boyle Heights
Long Beach
Santa Ana
South Los Angeles

The Center carries forward the vision of Rev. Dr. Cecil “Chip” Murray to see
faith communities actively and productively engaging the public square. The
Murray Center is committed to mentoring, training, and providing a network of
support through the USC faculty, staff and professional associates by:
Fostering economic self-sufficiency for low and moderate income communities
Offering training to nonprofit agencies and business in leadership development, capacity building, governance, and administration
Emphasizing faith-based community development, community engagement
and public policy advocacy to help revitalize communities
Encouraging financial literacy among low and moderate income communities
PROGRAM PHASES
Successful completion of full course dates & project submission. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to apply
for the FLI Intensive retreat

Enrollment in the first phase of the program will require a onetime fee of $300 plus $50 material fee, for a total of $350.00

Phase II Retreat

PROGRAM COMPLETION
FLI Community Development Summit and
Fellows will be measured on program attendance, participation, a five-page final paper, a group community project and
active participation in the Annual City-Wide Community Development Summit.

MENTORING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

The program includes an ongoing relationship with the Murray Center for techLeaders to Empower

Institute. Fellows will sign a mentoring and technical assistance agreement that Communities”
will outline the commitments, expectations and goals. Appointments for technical assistance will be scheduled with the program manager. In addition, CMCCE will also recruit student volunteers from USC graduate students in law, public policy, and other schools to assist organizations.
NETWORK WITH NEW PARTNERS
Fellows will have the opportunity to network with congregations, funders, nonprofit organizations, and local
and state public officials, including Christ Our Redeemer Church, Village Solutions, West Angeles Community
Development Corporation, Crenshaw Christian Center, Homeboy Industries, City of Refuge, Bank of America,
Union Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, the Economic Development Administration, Vermont-Slauson Economic Development Corporation, California Community Foundation, and the California Endowment.
