Why is the intersection of 8th Street and Central Avenue closed? The work at the intersection is part of a larger Central Avenue construction project spanning from 3rd Street to State Street. The project involves the necessary replacement of water mains and sanitary sewers, the construction of handicap accessible sidewalk ramps, additions to the snowmelt system and reconstruction of the roadway. At certain points in the construction process, the intersections of Central Avenue and 7th - 9th Streets will each be closed, but not at the same time. 2. How long will the construction last? The entire Central Avenue construction project will last from early May to mid-October, however, the portion of the project affecting Downtown Holland will only last approximately three to four weeks. The work will begin on Monday, May 11, after the conclusion of Tulip Time, and will continue until early June. 3. Where can people park? In addition to the public parking lots indicated on the map, the majority of the parking spaces along 8th Street will be available. Vehicles will be able to travel west on 8th Street to Central Avenue and turn around at Central Avenue to access parking spaces along that block. Likewise, vehicles will be able to travel east onto 8th Street from River Avenue and turn around at Central Avenue to access parking spaces along that block. This will also make it easier for customers to access the businesses located between Central Avenue and River Avenue. A few parking spaces will be closed adjacent to the intersection of 8th and Central Avenue to allow vehicles to turn around as indicated on the map above. 4. How can I stay up-to-date on the latest construction news? Downtown Holland Office will be updating our social media accounts and the Downtown Holland website with construction news on a regular basis.
