Excellence in LGBTQIA Studies
Application – 2015-16
Purpose
In honor of University of Minnesota alumnus Steven J. Schochet & the Schochet
Endowment, these academic awards honor excellence of currently enrolled University of
Minnesota full-time students advancing the generation and dissemination of knowledge,
awareness, and research around LGBTQIA topics & identities. (LGBTQIA stands for
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and related identities).

Steven J. Schochet Endowment for GLBT Studies, GLBTA Programs Office, and Office for
Equity and Diversity.
Recognition
These one-time awards range on average from $1,000 - $2,000 for the academic year.
Recipients will be honored at our annual Steven J. Schochet Awards Dinner. Regardless of
award, students are encouraged to submit an application each year they are eligible/qualify.

4:30 p.m. April 15th, 2015
Eligibility
University of Minnesota undergraduate or graduate students enrolled full time for the fall
and spring semesters are welcome to apply. Awards are “split” into two semesters.
Example: if you receive a $2,000 award, 1⁄2 will be allocated during the fall semester and
the second 1⁄2 will be allocated during the spring semester.
Selection Criteria
• Evidence of academic promise via past grades • Admission to an undergraduate or graduate/professional degree or credit certificate
program at any U of M campus • Good academic standing at the University of Minnesota (Non-probation status)
• Meet full-time enrollment status minimum for the 2015-2016 academic year
• Complete application material submission on time • Other criteria deemed “applicable” by Award Committee members Selection Committee Committee appointed by the GLBTA Programs Office
comprised of students, staff, & faculty. Application Process
Your application must include ALL of the following items to be considered. You are
responsible for ensuring that all items below are submitted to the Award Committee c/o the
GLBTA Programs Office at the address below by the deadline.
• Completed Steven J. Schochet Award Application • Unofficial Academic transcripts of all related college/post-secondary enrollment. • Your Work: Submit the academic paper, or project. (If you cannot send your
application package electronically, please drop off your package to the GLBTA
Programs Office in Appleby Hall, office #46.)

Applicants may submit only 1 application in 1 category. Multiple submissions will not
be reviewed. Applicants graduating during the academic year of award allocation are not eligible.
For example, if you apply during the fall semester, but will be graduating in the
spring, we cannot retroactively allocate funds to your account.
Please note that Regents Scholarship recipients are not eligible for this award. Category Submission Requirements
IMPORTANT!! All submissions must include a brief synopsis or abstract of the project,
paper, or work you enclosed. (Max. 300-500 words) • Best Undergraduate Academic Paper
Best academic paper related to LGBTQIA studies and/or themes written by an
undergraduate student. Papers submitted may have been written for a class,
conference, or similar academic work. • Best Graduate Academic Paper
Best academic paper related to LGBTQIA studies and/or themes written by a
graduate student. Papers submitted may have been written for a class,
conference, or similar academic work. • Community-Engaged Research
Best paper or project that involves community-engaged research. This is
research centered around fostering collaborations with LGBTQIA and
related communities with the goal of addressing issues that affect the wellbeing of LGBTQIA people and groups. This research should reflect
authentic commitment to building sustainable relationships. It is research
that is engaged in partnerships with communities, building knowledge
through trust, respect, and with the purpose of shared goals and vision.
• Artistic Expression
Best original creative project. This includes any form of artistic expression
including but not limited to: video, film, poetry, visual art, fiction, and musical
composition. Must have an LGBTQIA related theme, focus, or intentionality. NOTE: All digital submissions must be accessible online. Upload your digital
media to the internet (YouTube, Google, etc.) for easier access. Helpful Tip for Academic Paper Submissions: If your paper is over 10 pages, submit a
“sample” of your academic work that exemplifies the most important themes in your paper.
Proof read your paper and/or have it peer reviewed to receive feedback before submitting.
Helpful Tip for Artistic Expression Submissions: Consider submitting a “segment” of your
work. Examples: Don’t submit an 18 track CD of music; choose 1-2 pieces to represent your
work. Or, choose 10 minutes of a film to highlight rather than 1 hour.
