PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FOR March, 2015
Many thanks to our February speaker, Oska Lawrence, who spoke about prescription
drugs and how they interact with food. Many good questions and answers were exchanged.
Oska has emailed the slides he used at his presentation so send me email
([email protected]) if you wish to receive them.
Marcia Baker, Field Service Director from our National Office in Dallas plans to attend
our March meeting. She is here for Patient Day at Edwards Lifesciences in Irvine as well at
the ACC.15 here at the San Diego Convention Center. Marcia will talk with us about our National Office in Dallas and field questions. Our speaker for March is Dr. Nassir Azimi who will
talk about Preventive Cardiology.
Thank you to both Harry Zimmerman and Stanley Diengott for their generous donations to our chapter. Welcome to Amanda Lettmann who not only became a member of our
chapter but who is planning to become a hospital visitor as well
Palomar Health’s, “Dining with the Docs” held on the evening
of February 19 gave Mended Hearts the opportunity to display and
get our word out. Thank you to Debbie Day for joining me at this
event. Thank you to Sharron Watson and Vince Buscemi for volunteering their time at the Open House at Prebys Cardiovascular Institute on March 1. It was another opportunity to advance the mission
of Mended Hearts. See photos herein.
I look forward to seeing those who are attending” Patient Day” at Edwards
Lifesciences in Irvine on Friday, March 13. Thank you to those who have volunteered to assist in the booth that our National Office is having at ACC.15, a meeting of cardiovascular
professionals at the San Diego Convention Center, March 14-16.
It has been quite a busy time for Chapter 62 and I am grateful to all for stepping up to help at
several events that we have had the opportunity to participate in and further expand the importance of Mended Hearts.
We are exploring the opportunity of displaying again at the San Diego County Fair.
Having displayed at this event last year, we would be making some changes this year. We
would display for 3 weekend days and have tentatively chosen June 20, 27 and 28. Bob
Davis, our Carlsbad/Oceanside Satellite Coordinator has agreed to run this event and if we
can get the required number of volunteers we will go forward with it. We had a lot of fun last
year at this event and reached many people who had never heard of our organization.
March is the month for our visitor training and reaccreditation and just a reminder that
our Visiting Chair, Karen Christian will be holding visitor training in San Diego on Saturday
March 21 and in Carlsbad on March 28. I look forward to meeting our new visitors at these
events and to seeing those of you who are attending for reaccreditation. By the time you
read this you will have been contacted by Karen.
Good health to all

St. Patrick's Day Facts & Trivia
In Ireland, St. Patrick's Day is a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter.
Erin go Bragh translates to "Ireland forever."
The very first St. Patrick's Day parade was not in Ireland. It was in Boston in
1737.
The largest parade in the United States, held since 1762, is in New York City, and
draws more than one million spectators each year.
Over 100 US cities hold a parade every year.
Some of the other biggest St. Patrick's Day parades are in Chicago, Illinois and Savannah,
Georgia.
In 1948 President Truman became the first
president to attend a St. Patrick’s Day parade.
The city of Chicago goes so far to celebrate that
they dye their river green.
Green is associated with Saint Patrick's Day because it is the color of spring, of Ireland, and of
the shamrock.
To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, 110 million people will celebrate the day by wearing
green, making an Irish-inspired meal, or going out to celebrate.
There are 33.7 million U.S. residents who are of Irish ancestry. That number is almost nine times the population of Ireland itself.
15 million cards are exchanged on St. Patrick's Day. 10 percent of all St Patrick's
Day cards are sold in New York.
19 Presidents of the United States proudly claim Irish heritage -- including our
first President, George Washington.
St. Patrick is a hero in Ireland. And there are about 60 churches and cathedrals
named for him in Ireland alone. One of the most famous cathedrals is St. Patrick's
Cathedral in Dublin. These grounds bear the mark of the place where St. Patrick
baptized his converts.

Our La Jolla campus is growing! It is an exciting time to volunteer at Scripps. We are
recruiting now for volunteers to support Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and the
new Scripps Prebys Cardiovascular Institute.
The most rewarding reason to volunteer cannot be measured. As a volunteer, you
gain valuable experience, learn new skills, make friends and meet others who share
the same values and interests. Our volunteers’ efforts are appreciated by staff, physicians, patients and their families and enhance the overall level of care we provide.
Scripps volunteers touch the lives in many ways. Volunteers greet patients and visitors, assist patients at their bedside, support patient’s family members in the waiting
rooms, and assist staff members in clinical areas. Our volunteers give thousands of
hours of service each year in many different ways.

Volunteers Make a Difference
Volunteers must be active men and women age 15 and older who are willing to make
a commitment to volunteering at least one shift a week. Scripps volunteers include
students, homemakers, part-time workers, retired persons and seniors. Volunteers
may have unique opportunities to work in the emergency department, intensive care
unit, or surgery.
Volunteer training
After an initial interview and health screening, volunteers are assigned to an area of
their choice and attend a site orientation. We offer training programs and continuing
education to help volunteers remain efficient and effective.
For sign ups or more information call the volunteer office. 858-626-6088
