We are pleased you have selected Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) for clinical
rotations. To facilitate this experience, you must complete the following training requirements
and ensure you and the students bring the subsequent documentation to orientation. Failure to do
so may delay clinical rotations. Only American citizens are allowed to supervise and perform
clinical rotations at NMCSD. This is not a reflection on anyone or their nationality, but is related
to the Department of Defense security restrictions.
A. Access to Base
Your name will be submitted to security at NBSD Pass and Decal prior to your orientation date.
Before your orientation date proceed to Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) Pass and Decal. NBSD
Pass and Decal is NOT on NMCSD base. The address is below but GPS directions may be
inaccurate so please see the map at the end of this packet. You are required to provide two forms
of identification (Passport, Driver’s license, school ID w/ photography, military ID/dependent).
Also please complete the SECNAV 5512/1 form available on http://www.sdnsec.org/ and bring
it with you to NBSD. NBSD will conduct a background check. This background check is
SEPARATE from the one given through your school. Once completed, you will receive a base
pass/id card that will allow you access to NMCSD.

B. Required documentation to bring to orientation:
 Government issued ID (Drivers License, Passport, Military ID)
 Cyber Awareness Challenge training completion certification. (Refer to Appendix A)
 HIPAA training completion certification. (Refer to Appendix B)
** Please note that some of these requirements are different than the students. Courses are valid
for one year. Instructors will not have to repeat any unexpired training for subsequent clinical
rotations.
C. Clinical Instructor Responsibilities:
1. Make an appointment for an instructor orientation if this is your first time as an instructor
at NMCSD. POC is first name listed below.

2. Ensure the educational institution has submitted the American Databank (ADB)
documentation for you and your students 15 working days prior to orientation in
accordance with the SDNSEC policy.
3. Make an appointment for student orientation prior to the start of their clinical rotation.

4. Instruct the students to access http://www.sdnsec.org -- Naval Medical Center, SD
Clinical Agency Information and follow the instructions on the “Naval Medical Center
San Diego Student Welcome Aboard Form”.
5. Provide a copy of the Course Objectives to the Nursing Affiliation Coordinator prior to
the first clinical day. Include school, instructor with contact information, and clinical
rotation dates.
6. Ensure the students have the following documents the day of orientation:
 Cyber Awareness Challenge Training Certificate
 One form of Government Identification such as Passport and Drivers License.
D. The Nursing Affiliation Coordinator will meet you at the designated area on orientation
day and escort you to:
1. DNS - Computer “Token”
a. Signed SAAR form
b. Cyber Awareness Challenge Certificate
2. Security: Badge issuance
E. Gate Access and Parking


Students and instructors can park in the City Parking Lot located on Park Boulevard and
meet according to arrangements made with the Nursing Affiliation Coordinator.

To enter NMCSD, the students will need to pick up a “student/volunteer badge” from the
NBSD Pass and Decal office 2-3 working days prior to clinical rotation. (Refer to section
A)
F. Electronic Medical Record Training
1. Contact Jessie Jackson at 619-532-6417 to arrange training. Training must occur
after orientation has occurred and access to the computer has occurred.
2. An alternate, condensed version of the traning is provided on orientation day if option
1 is not preferred.

Appendix A: Cyber Awareness Challenge Training Guidance
1. To complete the Cyber Awareness (most recent for Department of Defense Employees.
You will a computer with internet access, Microsoft application, and a printer. MAC will
not work in accessing website.
2. Proceed to the following website:
http://iase.disa.mil/eta/cyberchallenge/launchPage.htm
3. A pop-up window will appear and training will automatically begin.
4. Print the Course Completion Certificate at the end of this course. If you close the
browser without printing the certificate you will be required to re-do the entire course!
Bring this certificate to orientation.
The course takes approximately one hour to complete.

Appendix B: HIPAA Online Training Guidance
1. To complete the HIPAA training you need a computer with internet access, Microsoft
application, and a printer. MAC will not work in accessing the website.
2. Click on the following web address:
https://mhslearn.csd.disa.mil/ilearn/en/learner/mhs/portal/home.jsp
3. The MHS Learn main page will be displayed. On the top of the webpage you will see a
link titled “MHS Staff Training.” Click on the purple link. (We highly encourage that
you utilize the Browser Check button located on the far right to ensure full compatibility
prior to attempting to complete the course).
4. Click the LOGIN button located on the far right side of the webpage.
5. A new webpage will open:
 If you have not already established an account on MHS Learn you will be
required to do so. Click on the “Click here to register” link underneath the
Username and Password fields.
 Click through the first screen. On the second page you will be required to enter
your social security number.
 You will then come to page 4, which is where you will enter your demographic
information. Please enter all appropriate information as delineated below:
o Service or Agency: Navy – N
o MTF\Location\Unit: West Region (00065) / choose San Diego – 0029
o Duty Status: Civilian – Volunteer
o HIPAA Job Description: 07 – Nursing
o HIPAA Job Domain: NAVMEDWEST – Navy Medicine West
o Username – should be firstname.lastname.last four of SSN
o Password – select a password with at least 8 characters (with at least one
letter, one numeric character, and one special character)
6. After registering, proceed to the “My Learning” page.
7. Select “HIPAA Training for Nursing Staff” from the right hand column.
8. There are two modules in this course – please remember to complete both modules.
9. REMEMBER to print the course completion certificate. You will submit this certificate
during orientation.

Non-military, family members or employees are NOT allowed to park onboard NMCSD campus
during day shift. Public parking for the City Lots have Trams or Shuttles that will bring you to
Building (1) the Main Hospital (landmarks are flagpoles & circle driveway) every 15 minutes.
Enter the building numbered (1) and ask at the lobby desk for direction to Building (5). All our
buildings are numbered (1, 2, 3 etc) with large numbers.
From I-5, North or South
Take the Pershing Drive exit.
You will end up on Pershing Drive.
Follow Pershing Drive to Zoo Place.
Turn left on Zoo Place.

From Highway 163
Go south on Highway 163.
Take Park Blvd. exit.
Turn left on Park Blvd.
Turn right at Zoo Place.

From Highway 94
Go west on Highway 94 to the end of the highway.
Highway 94 becomes F Street.
Continue on F Street to 16th Street (the first light).
Turn right on 16th Street.
Follow 16th Street to C Street.
Turn right onto C Street and continue to 19th Street.
Turn left onto 19th Street.
Follow 19th Street until Pershing Drive.
Follow Pershing Drive to Zoo Place.
Turn left on Zoo Place.

Public Parking instructions
City Lot parking (400/800 lots) near the Veterans Memorial Center Building.
Turn left at top of hill onto Park Blvd.
At the third stop light, turn left on President's Way.
Park in either the 400 (upper) or 800 (lower) lots.
The tram station is under the arbor between the two lots.
***The hospital tram runs every 15 minutes and is free.
