Aurora Borealis, commonly referred to as Northern Lights, is a natural
display of lights in the night sky. Researchers have concluded that solar
winds colliding with the earth’s magnetosphere can affect the brilliance of
the light display—but scientific research does not currently account for all
that can be seen.
Our cover image was photographed in August of 2014 during a brilliant and
changing light show over Europe Lake by photographer Dan Eggert.
Revel in the natural mysteries that
surround us. Join us for Celebrating
Open Spaces & Wild Places.
We invite you to come celebrate, explore and learn about the beautiful
lands and waters that make Door County such a unique and inspiring
place to live and visit! A half-day tour of Chambers Island, guided hikes
at our newest nature preserves, a community lecture featuring renowned
New England author and speaker, Peter Forbes, neighborhood progressive
dinners, and brisk-paced wilderness walks are just a few of the over 50
events and outings designed to bring our community together and deepen
our collective understanding and appreciation for Door County.
Choose outings that are right for you and join us. Many events are offered
at no charge; others help the Land Trust raise the funds needed to protect
and care for the places that make Door County so special. Some outings
are tailored just for Land Trust members; others are open to the public at
large. All work to strengthen the land preservation community!
We thank the many hosts, co-hosts, naturalists and hike leaders named
within this booklet for donating their time and talent. We also thank
our hardworking Community Outreach Committee, our many business
members (please see inside back cover), and, of course, we thank you! By
working together, we are protecting Door County’s exceptional lands and
waters forever...and that’s worth celebrating!
Door County Land Trust nature preserves are located throughout
the county. They are open for all to enjoy each and every day at
no charge. For directions to our preserves or for a complimentary
copy of our “Hiking Trails of the Door County Land Trust” map, visit

e are excited to share the news that we will once
again offer an online event registration system for
Celebrating Open Spaces events. In years past registration
was strictly handled by postal mail with a lottery system. We
have gone online to ultimately serve our membership better
by making the registration process easier and more efficient—
eliminating the need for a lottery.
Online registration will open on
Monday, June 15, 9:00 am.
will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eandvents
Register online by visiting www.DoorCountyLandTrust.org
clicking on the “Event Registration” button on our home
page. From there, you will be able to view and select which
events you would like to attend and reserve space for
yourself and/or your guests.
Y
ou will be given an option at checkout to pay with a
credit card online or mail a check to our office. If space
is available, registration for events will continue up to the
date of the event. Throughout the summer you can visit our
website to find out which events have available seats.
For those who do not have internet access or may not be
comfortable using the online registration system, we will have
volunteers stationed at our office on June 15th and 16th from
9:00 am to 3:00 pm to take your registration over the phone.
Just call our office at (920) 746-1359 and we’d be happy to
assist you.
Please note: Some Celebrating Open Spaces
events are open to the public, others are
for members only. If you are not a member,
we hope you’ll consider joining. To become

beautiful open spaces. All proceeds from Dining for Open Spaces
events benefit land preservation. See registration information at left.
The Explore the Door series offers guided adventures for you
to experience the beautiful places you’ve helped the Land Trust
protect. Outings are led by trained volunteer hike leaders and/or
Land Trust staff. All Explore the Door outings are free of charge
and will be held rain or shine. Registration is required. Registration

Event will be held rain or shine
$65 per person • 26 guests
Lueking Home, 1680 Sunrise Road, Washington Island
Washington Island’s lavender fields are the inspiration for combining the
best of two great cuisines. Across the Atlantic, France and Italy share
nearly the same latitude—a perfect climate for the fragrant fields. The
morning will begin with a hike through the forest at Carlin’s Point. This area,
adjacent to the Jackson Harbor Ridges beach, is connected to the shoal
that links Washington Island with Rock Island. The boreal forest found
here is a unique remnant of the last ice age. Few places like this remain in
Door County. After the hike, our host Christopher Lueking, and other Land
Trust supporters, invite you to join them for a flavorful French and Italian
lunch. The Lueking home is situated on 38 wooded acres, with 9OO feet of
shore, on the northeast corner of Washington Island. The stone and cedar
home, designed by architect Heinz Brummel, features a main room with
suspended beams and a large central fireplace. The rustic, barn-style room
opens onto a patio and is perfect for dining with a lake view. Bella!

All Aboard! Voyage to Chambers Island
Monday, August 3 @ 11:00 am - 5:30 pm
In the event of high winds, the event may be held on August 4.
$110 per person • 56 guests
Boarding at Alibi Dock, 9484 Spruce Street, Fish Creek
All aboard the Quo Vadis for an expedition to remote Chambers Island and
a step back in time. The Island was once home to nearly 70 boat builders,
fishermen and their families; much of its rustic charm still remains. The
Island’s remoteness is the very thing that has made it a perfect sanctuary
for migrating birds and other wildlife. In 2014, 115 acres on the island were
purchased by the Land Trust, creating the cornerstone of a proposed 1,000acre nature preserve. You’ll have the opportunity to choose two of the three
hikes offered! Learn about the exceptional bird-watching with islander and
birder, Naseem Reza; hike to a bog and old growth forest with Door County
Land Trust’s Director of Land Program Terrie Cooper; or take a fast-paced
hike to Lake Mackaysee with Land Trust Executive Director Dan Burke. Picnic
in the shade of the historic 1868 lighthouse before returning to Fish Creek. It
will certainly be an unforgettable day in an unforgettable place!

Monday, August 10 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Event will be held rain or shine
$75 per person • 24 guests
Widen Home, 7094 Highway 57, Baileys Harbor
Allow Judy and Arnie Widen to welcome you to their home where pristine
Heins Creek flows into Lake Michigan. Drinks and hearty hors d’oeuvres
will be served on the porch overlooking the creek, the sandy beach and
rolling waves of Lake Michigan. Arnie and a representative from the Land
Trust will give a brief presentation on the history of the area and how land
surrounding the Widen’s home has been preserved for future generations.
A custom-engineered wooden bridge will beckon you to stroll further to
experience the babbling water of Heins Creek. Enjoy the camaraderie of
those in attendance and meander down to the lakeshore for fantastic views
of Lake Michigan and the beautiful Widen homestead.
Arnie and Judy Widen came relatively late in life to the Land Trust ideal;
Arnie jokes that he ‘barely saw a tree’ during his childhood in Chicago! These
ex-urbanites have made up for lost time by ensuring the protection of one
of Door County’s richest wildlife corridors, the stretch of Heins Creek that
connects Kangaroo Lake to Lake Michigan. The new Heins Creek Nature
Preserve’s wooded sand dunes (remnants of ancient shorelines) that stand
50-60 feet tall and its Class II trout stream, provide habitat that is a primary
fly-way for birds migrating past Door County.

forests, which thrive in the cooler microclimates along the lake side of the
peninsula. This remarkable place features ancient sea caves, rock outcrops,

Living Lightly on the Land: A Trolley Tour with a Twist

Event will be held rain or shine
$85 per person • 44 guests
Beginning at the Fortin & Samida Home, 5581 Reynolds Road, Sturgeon Bay
“Living lightly on the land” refers to a plethora of lifestyle choices: growing
organic food, restoring native landscapes and wetlands, operating on “Net
Zero” energy, reducing VOCs (volatile organic compounds), practicing
adaptive reuse and historic restoration, recycling and composting…to name a
few.
Putting green living into practice can be daunting and overwhelming. Three
couples living relatively near one another will show you how they are putting
ecologically-sustainable ideas into practice—how they “walk the walk.” A
trolley will transport you to their three properties for tours. You’ll have an
opportunity to ask questions and expand your knowledge. We guarantee that
