One Health Summer Institute

Dear Colleagues,
The Ohio State University Health Sciences-Ethiopia One
Health Partnership is pleased to launch the 2013 Summer
Institute. The activities in this partnership were initiated in
response to recent visits by Ohio State Health Sciences
deans and global strategies team to Ethiopia in 2012
and successful interactions with Ethiopian academic and
regulatory institutes, mainly the Addis Ababa University and
University of Gondar.
The Summer Institute activities outlined in this brochure
and the goals of this initiative are well-aligned with the
internationalization mission of The Ohio State University. The
Ohio State Global Gateways has established a presence in
various regions of the world including China, India, and soon
to be established in Brazil. We hope the momentum of this
partnership could also open a door for Ohio State Global
Gateways in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The main goal of this partnership is to develop sustainable
and mutually-beneficial partnerships with Ethiopian
academic institutions and other affiliate partners in Ethiopia,
including:
The activities of the 2013 Summer Institute are
collaboratively sponsored by the Ohio State Health
Science Colleges, Ethiopian academic institutions, and
Ohio State Outreach and Engagement. The Ohio State
Global Strategies and International Affairs, as well as health
sciences leadership, are committed to this endeavor and
look forward to a productive and sustainable partnership.

Introduction
Major priority areas identified:
The Ohio State University Health Science colleges, through
its deans and representative faculty members, established
The Ohio State University Health Sciences-Ethiopia One
Health Partnership task force in August, 2012. The goal is to
develop a sustainable and mutually beneficial partnership
with Ethiopian academic and affiliate partners.
The task force conducted the following activities:
• Two site visits and meetings (July and December 2012]
with two academic universities-Addis Ababa University
(AAU) and University of Gondar (UoG);
• Met with the Ethiopian president, the minister of health,
the state minister of education, and the deputy prime
minister;
• Visited other regional and international partners
including ILRI, EHNRI, AHRI and CDC;
• Met with U.S. Embassy leadership in Ethiopia and
gained support for the partnership initiative;
• Developed a draft strategic plan based on inputs and
priorities received from the two partner Ethiopian
universities;
• Conducted a mini-retreat (March 2013) for the health
sciences deans and task force members.
Training prototype
Short-term engagement supplemented with a long-term
PhD training with the goal of strengthening capacity and
collaborations.
• The Ohio State University Health Sciences–Ethiopia
One Health Summer Institute conducts one to two week
modular courses in various health science disciplines.
• Admit one sandwich PhD candidate in each of the
health science disciplines from the two partner institutes
with a completion time line of four years.
Research capacity innovation prototype
Two short-term priorities identified:
• Rabies elimination: We plan to conduct a feasibility and
KAP assessment, and a portion of the intervention using
vaccine delivery and population control.
• Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment: The longterm goal is to strengthen capacity in prenatal and
maternal health. Feasibility and pilot projects will be
conducted in the short term.

One Health outreach E-capacity strengthening:
Develop an electronic platform using a custom tablet based
application to capture One Health research and training
activities which will enable crowd sourcing of the Ohio State
health sciences and Ethiopia activities.
Clinical capacity strengthening engagements:
A College of Medicine ophthalmology team conducted
teaching and exploratory activity in February, 2013.
Additionally, a neurosurgeon and three optometrists are
joining the health sciences team for the Summer Institute
2013.

Food Safety and Foodborne Diseases Epidemiology
Instructor: Bayleyegn Molla

Dates: June 21 - July 3, 2013
Topics include: Foodborne bacterial, parasitic, and viral
diseases with special emphasis on their epidemiology,
transmission, detection, and specific preventive and control
measures; antimicrobial use in food animals, resistance, and
veterinary drug residues; HACCP principles and applications
in food processing facilities; sanitary and regulatory
requirements and applications in food processing facilities.
Introduction to Molecular Epidemiology of Infectious
Diseases and Genetics of Cancer Epidemiology
Instructor: Wondwossen A. Gebreyes

Dates: July 12 - July 16, 2013
Topics include: Overview and discussion of core
molecular approaches; introduction and core methods:
gene amplification, restriction, hybridization, genotyping,
genomics, and microarray; analysis and interpretation of
genotypic data; practical applications in public health.
International Trade and Public Health/Environmental
Hygiene/Risk Analysis
Instructors: Michael Bisesi

Dates: July 4 - July 10, 2013
Topics include: Globalization and internal trade, public and
animal health, and food safety and food security; roles
and functions of WTO, OIE, and FAO in international trade;
international requirements, laws, and regulations (Codex
Alimentarius, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards) on
import/export of animals and animal products; components
and application of risk analysis to import/export of
animals and animal products; the environmental health
exposure model; aspects of environmental toxicology and
microbiology; contaminants’ influence on food quality; and
risk assessment/analysis.
Epidemiology of Zoonoses
Instructor: Thomas Wittum
(The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine)
Dates: July 22 - July 30, 2013
Topics include: Concepts and epidemiology of zoonotic
diseases; emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases;
bacterial, viral, and parasitic zoonotic diseases under
tropical conditions; concepts in zoonotic disease outbreak
investigations; principles in zoonotic diseases control and
prevention.

identifying research methods to match research
problems and hypotheses; principles of research

statistical and qualitative analyses, and disseminating

Topics include: Human and animal subjects concerns;
scientific misconduct in biomedical research; issues
of authorship, conflict of interest.
Optometry Training

Dates: July 8 - July 16, 2013
Topics include: Refractive error; the distribution and
projections for refractive error in the future, and
its potential impact on public health. Lectures will
include discussions about factors that influence
refractive error, mechanisms for correction, and the
association with ocular pathology.

Our Projects
Rabies Needs Assessment/Feasibility
Ohio State Professional Students Working on
Rabies Projects in Gondar, Ethiopia
(June - August, 2013)
(UoG/EHNRI/Ohio State)
The project aims to implement a rabies prevention and
control plan in a well-defined geographic region in
Gondar, Ethiopia, to eliminate canine-associated rabies
in animals and humans and establish a sustainable
system for prevention and control of rabies at the national
level. The project has five work packages, the first of
which will gather information on current rabies response
efforts, conduct community knowledge, attitudes and
practices (KAP) surveys in urban and rural settings to
guide educational interventions and hold a stakeholder’s
workshop bringing together key private and public
agencies to develop a rabies response plan.
Laura Binkley is currently working on
a dual Master’s degree specializing in
both environmental and veterinary public
health, as well as wildlife ecology. Her
research interests include approaching
the ecology of zoonotic disease through a
“One Health” perspective.
Karissa Magnuson is a second-year
veterinary student at The Ohio State
University College of Veterinary Medicine.
She is interested in pursuing a career in
wildlife/conservation medicine.
Cervical Cancer-Screening and Treatment (S&T)
Program Leaders: Usha Menon, Jennifer Kue, Jodi Ford

Dates: June 24 - July 6, 2013
This project aims to implement an evidence-based S&T
program for cervical cancer that has high potential for
decreasing cervical cancer incidence and set the stage for
a strong framework for community programs in Ethiopia
by training nurses to perform the procedures. Nurses are
the largest, formally educated health care workforce in
Ethiopia and are the ideal choice to provide this service.
Korbin Smith is finishing his undergraduate
degree in health sciences with a business
minor, and plans to pursue a PhD/Master’s
degree in public health. He is interested
in the severity of rabies in Ethiopia and
the role of treatment and education, as
well as the effect of health care on the
infrastructure and society of Ethiopia.
Environmental Hygiene/Food Security and
Safety
Program Leader: Michael Bisesi
(The Ohio State University College of Public Health)
Ally Sterman is a second-year veterinary
student at Ohio State. She is interested
in the fields of emergency, surgery, and
shelter medicine, and completed an
honors thesis with Dr. Gebreyes focusing
on Salmonella. Ally is very interested in
population control in animals; specifically
high-volume spay/neuter.
Dates: July 11 - 17, 2013
This project will focus on vegetative crops and livestock
(including poultry) from farm to production and distribution
to consumption. The overall theme of the collaborative
efforts will include identifying, characterizing and
controlling sources, pathways and receptors of exposure.

Our Workshops
Rabies Stakeholders Workshop
WHO AGISAR/Ohio State Research Projects
(EHNRI/UoG/Ohio State/AAU)
The stakeholders’ workshop on rabies will bring together
concerned stakeholders including government officials
in human health, animal health, public health, wildlife,
finance, education, and tourism as well as representatives
of diagnostic labs, vaccine manufacturers, and universities
in the region. The plan will serve as a model for
implementation of canine associated rabies elimination at
the national level.
In this launching workshop, both PhD students, respective
mentors, and WHO AGISAR representatives will participate
and discuss project updates, plans and future collaboration
in research and training. The Ohio State College of
Veterinary Medicine NIH Fogarty Global Infectious Diseases
(GID) program on “Molecular Epidemiology of Foodborne
Pathogens in Eastern Africa,” the WHO Advisory Group on
Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (WHOAGISAR) and Department of Food Safety and Zoonoses
have partnered in funding jointly the two countries’ PhD
research projects.
NIH Fogarty/One Health fellowship Program
Neurological Surgery Clinical Fellowship Program

The main objective of this workshop is to bring together
NIH Fogarty and “One Health” trainees from Ethiopia with
mentors to discuss various aspects of ongoing PhD research
projects. The NIH Fogarty and One Health Fellowship
Program is a training and research program that fosters
partnerships and strengthens institutional capacity through
mentored research training for PhD, MS candidates and
short-term certifications for employees from three Eastern
African partner institutes (Sokoine University of Agriculture,
Tanzania, University of Nairobi, Kenya, and Addis Ababa
University, Ethiopia).
As part of the effort to strengthen clinical capacity, the initial
goal is to assess feasibility and partnership building and
enhance institutional capacity by providing an exchange of
ideas, teaching, and mentorship in the area of neurological
surgery in Ethiopian academic hospitals. This program will
facilitate interactions among professionals at Ohio State and
in Ethiopian academic hospitals in the area of neurosurgery.
The program will use a mentorship model where surgeons
will work with and help local experts identify priority targeted
areas. The main goal is to establish a durable partnership
with the Ethiopian academic team to provide excellent
neurosurgical teaching and care.
