the entire Forest Region, the
fire hazard for t h e C a r i b o o
Region forest district has
decreased to "low".
Last week saw i n c r e a s e d
fire fighting activity wilh 12
lightning caused fires. T h e r e
were over 2,000 lightning
s t r i k e s d e t e c t e d last week;
,1,300 of those were on Thursday, A u g u s t 5. T h e r e were
over 30,000 lightning strikes
around BC over the past week.v
For the firsl week of A u gust, the Quesnel forest district saw two new fires which
burned a total of 0.2 hectares.
Total fires for Quesnel to date
n u m b e r 35, with 14 hectares
burned in tolal.

to clean up and restore prime

e s t u a r y were a n n o u n c e d on
August 3 by Tom Siddon, Minister of National Defence,-on
behalf of Fisiieries and Oceans
Minister Ros.s Reid.
"The estuary is vital habitat
for fish, its marshes providing
the first link in food production as well as a rearing area
for juvenile salmon heading
out to sea," said Siddon, MP
for R i c h m o n d , " P r o t e c t i n g
these rnarshes is critical since
many have been degraded by
activities on the estuary."
T h e first project will enhance habitat on the Burnaby
foreshore this summer. It will
involve a partnership with contributions of $50,000 from the
federal g o v e r n m e n t ' s Green
Plan, $325,000 from the City of
Burnaby and $.50,000 from the
North Fraser H a r b o u r Commission.

Commission will restore marshes along a section of the
Burnaby Fraser Fiireshore
Park that have been destroyed

prepared sites will.be planted
to restore productivity.

Districts, had a total of 17 new
fires, burning 1.4 hectares for
the first week in August. This
b r i n g s t h e t o t a l n u m b e r of
fires to date to 177 with 180.8
hectares burned.
Last year's figures for the
C a r i b o o Region were considerably worse: 582 fires in total
with 711.3 hectares burned at
this time last year.
There will b e no prescribed
burning this week because of
the wet w e a t h e r and a g r e e ments not to conduct any duri n g t h e C a n a d a vSummer
Games in Kamloops.
