How To Make 2,356 Friends on MySpace
By Bev Barnett South Bay Director
For musicians MySpace can be a great way to connect with each other with venues
radio stations song contests and other opportunities as well as with fans
Be sure to sign up for a MUSIC MySpace Page rather than an individual account Just
go to any Music MySpace Page such as the WCS South Bay Open Mic page at
wwwmyspacecom/southbaywcs You’ll see a link on the right side of the navigation bar
for Artist Sign Up If you’ve already signed up for an individual account your best bet is
to cancel the account and start over with a Music MySpace account preferably with a
different sign in name
The Music MySpace template gives you a built
in player to showcase your songs a Gig
List band information box a photo gallery and a blog There are several MySpace editors
online where you can fill in a few boxes and get HTML code to customize your page with

Open Mics
• SONGWRITERS OPEN MICs feature WCS writers (or
designated stand
ins) performing their original material
live or singing against a recording before an audience of
peers New members may join at any event and perform
there the same day Each performer signs up for any slot
still available We remind members to focus on the fact
that “winning isn’t the only point” (by any means!) and
to network and discover the wealth of talent experience
and services on which there is to draw as well as to offer
their own
Experienced guest music industry judges give written
feedback at most events and determine acknowledgments
for “Best Song” and “Best Performance” for that event
location Note: Some events use peer
judging; and some
events are unable to either record performances or allow
performance against a recording Check details about
individual events if these factors are crucial to you Those
acknowledged for “Best Song” or “Best Performance” are
not eligible to be acknowledged at that same event for
six months thereafter although all are always welcome
to perform and receive feedback
“Best Song” is awarded – hours of studio time from
the sponsoring studio which must be used by the winning
writer within a to month period from the date of
acknowledgment and which may not be bought sold or
transferred Winners of “Best Song” are eligible to perform
at the applicable Annual Open Mic Playoffs event(s) in
August Each member acknowledged for “Best Song” at
an Open Mic Playoffs event must be pre
registered for
CREATION:CRAFT:CONNECTION the WCS’s Annual
Songwriters Conference and must be available to perform
during the prestigious Sunset Concert there on Saturday
evening for an audience of over industry guests and
many of the conference attendees
“Best Performance” receives blank CDs w/sleeves and
the opportunity to be among six members by random
draw performing at one of the two Noontime Acoustic
Concert
Concerts at C:C:C which is always presented on the second
weekend of September

West Coast Songwriters Open Mic Playoffs
The WCS monthly open mics provide an opportunity for members to perform their original
songs receiving audience feedback as well as written comments from guest judges One song
at each event is acknowledged as best song and its member writer who presented the song
at the event qualifies to participate in the playoffs held each August These qualifiers will
receive complimentary studio time (non transferable) from the event’s sponsoring studio
A “Best Performer” acknowledgement is also given at each monthly event All those
members who have been acknowledged as best performers are entered into a lottery
drawing for performance showcase slots during the noon
time concerts at the annual WCS
conference Creation * Craft * Connection A separate performance acknowledgement is not
given at playoff events This year’s conference will be September & at Foothill College
For the open mic season the playoff events for Best Song of the Year will allow
more members to be recognized and that recognition will come in the way of some exciting
and tangible rewards
IN recent years as we have expanded the number of monthly open mics that we offer we
have combined two events into one playoff event This year each of the eight open mic
events (East Bay Hollywood Manteca Napa North Bay Sacramento San Francisco and
South Bay) will hold its own playoff event in early August That means we will have
eight winners this year instead of three These eight Best Song winners will be included on a
WCS compilation CD along with winners from our Song Contest
Playoff Schedule
Wednesday July th Pig’n Whistle Hollywood Playoffs (not confirmed)
Thursday August rd Chez Shari’s Manteca Playoffs (not confirmed)
Monday August th Freight & Salvage East Bay Playoffs
