To paraphrase the American writer James Baldwin, I am already a witness and but not yet a spokesman to A.W.E.’s progress, successes, and challenges in 2011. Highland Blvd. Milwaukee, WI 53208 Reanna Ottoson, Program Outreach Specialist [email protected] ABOUT A.W.E. Artists Working in Education, Inc., founded in 1998 by a group of artists, educators and museum curators, sponsors professional artists to work creatively with Milwaukee children and youth through two main initiatives: The School Studio artistin-residence program is designed to advance learning through the visual arts. The Truck Studio mobile art program brings free art experiences directly to children at parks, playgrounds, libraries and community centers in challenged Milwaukee neighborhoods year-round. To be sure, A.W.E’s work is more important than ever before, as the MPS District continues to cut its in-school arts curriculum. Numerous teacher layoffs occurred this past summer. The result? The district this year has roughly one arts teacher for every 17 schools! In response, A.W.E. mobilized and developed a strategic plan for growth to increase studio program hours in schools and also in communities. One of the many things that distinguish A.W.E. is our belief that we need to take art into the community and where the kids are. Our very successful Truck Studio Program enables us to do exactly that. This past year, the traveling program brought memorable art experiences to 4,250 children at 58 different parks, community centers, and libraries. For the first time, we now offer free drop-in art programs for children at the libraries year-round! Finally, with the departure of Sally Witte after seven dedicated years as executive director, the A.W.E. Board successfully secured funding from the Nonprofit Management Fund to conduct a very thorough leadership assessment and launch a search for her successor. A.W.E. is witnessing exciting growth. I am honored to serve as the Interim Executive Director and look forward to being a part of A.W.E.’s expansion. A.W.E. is an arts education organization you can be proud of. More than ever, with your continued generous support, A.W.E. will continue to do what it does best: Fostering creativity through a loving and supportive network of artists, youth, and their communities working together. I invite you to join me as I continue to witness first-hand the exceptional projects in the school studios, truck studios, and library programs. Please join me on a visit to these programs any time. On behalf of all of us at A.W.E., I thank you for your support of our artists, our children, and our community! William J. It is touching to see how A.W.E. can impact a community in just one week’s time. I feel grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of such a positive organization.” Brandon McGee, intern, Carmen Park Academy of Accelerated LearningClay Mask and Writing • “ I flagged down a bike riding boy and asked him if he wanted to do art. He stopped in his tracks - “I LOVE art!” He ended up getting a college level portrait drawing lesson from Brittany, he made a wonderful drawing.” Reanna Ottoson, Lead Artist, Smith Park Animation and Fiber Collage • “ I will never forget the experience of working with the children from Burma who spoke Karen. Despite the language barrier, I was able to teach the children how to draw proportionate portraits through a universal visual language on the very first day. This sort of interaction reaffirms my beliefs that art can be used as a tool to connect people. “ Laura Dorow, Lead Artist, Modrzejewski Park Clara Barton School Weaving Milwaukee German Immersion Garden Homes Elementary Ceramic and Writing Tenor High School Painted Mural Shalom High School Zines: Photography and Writing La Causa Charter School Garden Mosaic 2010-2011 School Studio • “ Four years ago I walked into a 7th grade class, which was in utter chaos. The videographer and I were trying to figure out a strategy to get the kids to calm down when one of the boys confronted me. I felt he was ready to hit me. I didn’t back down. He challenged us for the entire 8 week residency. Two years later, I was back in the school for another A.W.E. residency when the same boy ran up to me excitedly calling my name. He had come back to the school to show off the straight A’s he received on his high school report card. I truly believe that we made a difference in this boy’s life because our programs not only teach art but also self-discipline. The students can witness two professional artists interacting in a positive way to provide a strong community and a safe space in the classroom.” Valaria Tatera, Lead Artist in Residence • “ This project allowed our students to really capture who they are, where they want to go and what Shalom meant to them on this journey of becoming an adult.” Gwendolyn Spencer, Director, Shalom High School Anonymous Terry A.
