Lesson 5: How to Say Goodbye in Vietnamese Chào. LESSON NOTES In this lesson we'll introduce parting greetings. In Vietnamese, "hello" and "goodbye" share the same phrase, chào. The tone falls gradually and is an expression that can be used for most occasions at anytime of the day. You can also say tạm biệt, which means "Good bye." Both words are the falling tone with a heavy stop. The first word tạm means "temporary." This is followed by biệt, which means "farewell" The literal translation of this phrase is "temporary farewell" but is used as the English equivalent for "good bye." Another parting phrase is hẹn gặp lại, which is "See you again" in English. Every word in this phrase is the sharp falling tone with a heavy stop. The first word hẹn means "appointment" Next is gặp which means "meet" And finally lại which means "again." Altogether we have: hẹn gặp lại. All three of the phrases can be used as greetings. However, if you want to be more formal, you can add the appropriate pronoun in each phrase that we learned in Lesson 3. PHRASES Vietnamese Chào tạm biệt và hẹn gặp lại. Hãy đọc lại bài báo này đi.
