ou know the old adage: “Good things come to those who wait.”
If you’ve been waiting patiently for the latest BlackBerry release,
you’ll no doubt fall in love with BlackBerry 10. Without abandoning
what made BlackBerry such a universally sought device in the first
place – fast typing and messaging, the best battery around and security that
even banks and governments trust – BlackBerry upped the ante with features
every smartphone owner loves and relies upon: blazing speed, smooth multitasking, a killer web browser, smart cameras and apps galore. Here’s a look
at what makes the new BlackBerry so hot.

REASON NO. 1
Say goodbye to weather worries
Snow, wind, hail – what, me worry?
Why a satellite dish can’t compare to
Rogers digital TV.
Why Digital TV is Better Than Satellite
Canadian winters are rough. Snow, freezing rain, hail
and the like can wreak havoc on everything from
your daily commute to your favourite leather shoes.
So why would your satellite dish be any different? It,
too, is susceptible to bad weather.
Regardless of what all the dish fanboys say, severe
weather can adversely affect the performance of a
satellite dish. Specifically, harsh weather can result
in an interrupted picture. And who wants that in
the middle of your favourite TV show, movie, award
show or sports match?
With Rogers digital TV, the signal is unaffected
by weather. You’ll get the strongest, clearest, uninterrupted picture possible, except in the case of
a complete power outage. But then watching TV
would be the least of your worries.

LTE: Don’t Get Left in
the Dust
There was a time when digital TV was
piped into homes via ugly and fussy
satellite dishes. Often prone to weather
damage and sometimes needing updates
and maintenance, they may have given
us more channels, but, arguably, at an
annoying cost. Today, thankfully, you
can get digital TV delivery in a much
more sophisticated form, with much
more choice and advanced features.
Bottom line: there are some distinct downsides to satellite TV,
and so many upsides to digital
cable. Still need convincing?
Here are four reasons why we
think Rogers digital TV is
superior to satellite.

REASON NO. 2
Freedom to roam
Watch TV wherever you want with Rogers Whole Home PVR
Most households today have more than one TV;
upstairs, downstairs, in the kitchen and bedrooms –
we’re watching in every room of the house. With
many satellite dishes, you are limited to where you can
enjoy digital TV, let alone the fact that you can only
do just that – watch – without being able to pause,
rewind, start or stop programming wherever you wish,
as you can with Rogers Whole Home HDPVR.
Take the Follow Me TV feature, for instance: You can
begin watching a recorded show in your downstairs
living room, pause it, and then resume viewing in the
kitchen as you prepare supper – all without missing
a second. What’s more, up to four TVs can access

Have you ever been schooled by a 10-year-old? It happened to me recently, while
visiting in-laws, when my nephew not only corrected something I said, but knew
exactly how to prove he was right: he went online. Bruised but not broken, I accepted
the blow – but it got me thinking. To him, the internet is just part of life; he doesn’t
know what it was like to live during the olden days of the 1990s. With this in mind, we
decided to investigate how the Web has changed our everyday lives in radical ways.
You can read about it here.
Of course, my nephew isn’t the only one who can’t imagine life offline. We’re all like
this now, to some degree. Take the smartphone in your pocket – it’s now your lifeline
to work, family and friends, media and virtually everything else. It’s more like a minicomputer with voice and texting capabilities. Fact is, I can’t imagine being without

BlackBerry Z10, this issue’s cover darling. Slick, fast and reimagined, the new BlackBerry

to the Game of Thrones’s upcoming Season 3, there’s a lot to look forward to this

such as Ford and AT&T, we asked them to animate

figure rips a satellite dish off a house and tosses it
into a nearby garbage can. It’s all in a days work

First Up
To Do:
Get Organized
Spring has sprung, and that means managing new projects. From
gardening and yard sales to your kids’ soccer schedules, staying
organized means staying sane. Here are three to-do apps worth
downloading. Do it now and check it off your list.
ANY.DO TO-DO LIST | AN, iOS ; free
Keep track of everything you need to get done –
today, tomorrow, this week and this month – with this
sophisticated app. If you want your to-do lists to sync with your
cloud-based apps and include widgets and features such as voice
recognition, this app is for you.
Best for: multi-faceted, widget-loving, cloud-using types
WORKFLOWY | iOS; free
You’re one of those “creative” types who’s got a zillion
projects on the go. Your to-do lists typically take up
notebooks and include lots of tangental notes. Workflowy lets you
keep tabs on all your projects with collapsible sections that you
can open and close for easy viewing. When you finally complete a
project, your notes are saved for permanent retrieval, so you can
revisit them at any time.
Best for: multi-taskers in need of a digital notepad
TODOIST | AN, iOS, WP; free
You like getting things done. No cloud sync, no special
widgets or bells or whistles. Just clean and simple. That’s
what this app is all about. Break down a project into an infinite

Is 3D a fad?
When Avatar hit theatres in 2009, 3D
was big news. Now, 3D technology
is everywhere, from games to TVs.
But is it here to stay? We asked John
Jerit, CEO of American Paper Optics,
a company that’s been making 3D
glasses for 22 years.
IS 3D HERE TO STAY?
Definitely. We’ve had two 3D
crazes before, in the ’50s and ’80s,
but nothing compares to what’s
happening now. And yet, as popular
as it is, it’s also no longer novel.
When Avatar was in theatres, more
than 75 percent of viewers paid to
see it in 3D. Now, a 3D film is lucky
to get 50 percent buy-in.
BUT YOU BELIEVE 3D ISN’T
GOING AWAY?
That’s right. Hollywood has
invested too much money to move
away from it now.
WHAT ABOUT THE HOMEVIEWING 3D EXPERIENCE –
IS IT JUST A GIMMICK?
Not at all. The quality is as good
as what you’d see in a cinema.
The technology is there, and so the
quality depends on what you’re
watching. Sports are particularly
good in 3D, as are games and, of
course, movies.

they’ve granted you permission
to track their device.
SITUATION: YOU’VE LOST
YOUR PHONE AT A NOISY
PARTY OR BAR
If you include Anti-Theft coverage in your Rogers Phone Finder
service, you can log into your

noise, revealing its whereabouts.
SITUATION: YOUR PHONE
IS STOLEN
If you subscribe to the AntiTheft package, you can click
“lock” in the Rogers Phone

Though he’s appeared
on Degrassi and 2 Broke

if you haven’t heard of
Adam Korson – yet. You’ll
get to know the Torontoborn, L.A.-based actor
now that he’s starring in
Seed, the new Modern
Family–esque comedy,
airing on City, Mondays
at 8:30 p.m. Korson plays
Harry, a carefree bachelor
whose life takes an
interesting turn when he
finds out he’s got a couple
of kids – the product of
past sperm donations.
A self-described “nerd,”
Korson visited his

When he’s not surfing the web,

Korson uses his tablet largely to read

also watching Season 2 of Downton Abbey on his iPad, which
he downloaded onto his tablet

Korson loves his apps. “I use

You love your tablet, and why not? It’s portable,
powerful and always connected – as long as you

Text CHRIS POWELL

It’s hard to believe that Steve Jobs
once said in an interview that
tablets, as a new product, would fail.
He changed his mind, obviously, and
look what’s happened since. Today,
about one in 10 Canadians owns a tablet – an iPad, a Samsung Galaxy Tab,
a BlackBerry PlayBook or otherwise –
and that number is on a serious
upswing. As tablets get more useful,
the number of tablets on the market
keeps growing rapidly.
Tablets are portable and powerful
– simply put, they’re awesome. However, that awesomeness plummets
significantly if you’re relying on Wi-Fi
alone to get your tablet online.
We’re using our tablets for everything these days, from on-the-go
gaming and TV viewing to web
surfing and shopping. But all this
requires a wireless internet plan
– one that’s super-fast, affordable,
reliable and secure.
Connecting your tablet to the
Rogers LTE network means you
can more fully enjoy your device,
wherever you are. (See p48 for more
about LTE.)

Tablets offer a whole whack of ways to
enhance those out-of-home occasions,
from maps, apps and TV streaming to

of these tools rely on internet connectivity, and there’s no guarantee you’ll
be able to establish a Wi-Fi connection
18

wherever you are, especially if you’re on
the move.
You don’t use a pay phone for calls
while you’re out, so why be limited to
Wi-Fi hotspots to get online? Don’t let
your chance at a great shortcut or killer
deal be compromised by spotty internet.
TO TETHER
OR NOT TO
TETHER?
“Why do I
need a wireless internet
plan when I
can tether my
tablet directly
to my own
smartphone?”
ANSWER: Sure,
you could tether,
but that’s far
from a perfect
solution. It not
only compromises
your phone’s
battery life, but
tethered devices
must also remain
in close proximity
to ensure a proper
connection (byebye, freedom).
What’s more,
using a single
connection for
multiple devices
can adversely
affect download

Fortune magazine has called tablets
“the future of gaming,” while U.S.
app analytics firm Flurry found that the
majority of tablet time (67%) is
spent playing games, considerably more
than social networking (10%)
and other entertainment (9%).
The vast majority of tablet gaming
takes place either on the couch or in the
car, and with multiplayer gaming gaining in popularity, thanks to titles such as

enemies and allies so tightly. As the War of

Jean Valjean
Hugh Jackman dishes about the responsibility
and honour of playing one of the greatest
characters in literary history in Les Misérables
YOU LOST 30 POUNDS TO BECOME JEAN VALJEAN.
WAS THIS TORTUROUS?
It’s a very big part of the story. [Director] Tom Hooper said,
“I want to make you unrecognizable. And if people in your life
aren’t saying, ‘Man, you’re sick, something is wrong,’ then
you haven’t gone far enough.” So, you know, I did lose a lot of
weight and then had the joy of putting weight on, which was
a 30-pound journey from the beginning.
HOW DO YOU PERCEIVE THE VALJEAN CHARACTER?
He’s one of the great literary characters. I see him as a real
hero, quiet, humble. Jean Valjean comes from a place of the
greatest hardship that I could ever imagine, and manages to
transform himself from the inside. Obviously, on film, we
wanted to show the outside change as well, but [novelist]
32 connectedrogers.ca
Victor Hugo uses the word “transfiguration.” It’s even more
than a transformation because he becomes more godlike; it’s
a spiritual change. It’s something that happens from within.
And, to me, it’s one of the most beautiful journeys ever written. I didn’t take the responsibility of playing the role lightly.
I think it’s one of the greatest opportunities I’ve ever had,
and if I’m even a tenth of the man Jean Valjean is, I’ll be a very
happy man.
ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL IMAGES IS SEEING THE
FACE OF GOD. WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL TAKE ON THAT?
For Hugo, there’s a large comment in the book about the
church at the time. It made him very, very unpopular when he
wrote it. It was a big behemoth, powerful, distant, and I think
he was reminding everyone at the time of the Jesus Christ

example, which is to love people, and it has never been more relevant. You don’t
need to go to the top of a mountain in Tibet to find self-realization. You don’t need
to do great things or listen to spiritual leaders. The first thing you have to do is be
present, to know what you stand for in life.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE NEW SONG, “SUDDENLY”?
Victor Hugo talks about two lightning bolts of realization for Jean Valjean: justice and, when he meets Cosette, love. For the first time in this 51-year-old man’s
life he experiences love. Tom [Hooper] said, “This is one of the most incredible,
dramatic moments ever written about love, and we don’t have a song for that.” It
propels the entire second half of the movie for Jean Valjean. So [Tom] asked the
guys to write a song, and I think I’d count it definitely as one of the great honours of my life to have two incredible composers, [Claude-Michel Schönberg and
Alain Boublil], write a song with my voice in mind. I’ll never forget first singing it.
I felt like I’d been singing it my whole life. –Ariel Coen
Few film titles aptly describe
the physical and emotional
condition of its characters
quite like Les Misérables. The
film’s success is due to the
hyperrealism in the vocal performances. New technologies
allow for the near-perfect recording of songs on location,
which, since the 1930s, have
always been pre-recorded.
As Fantine, Anne Hathaway’s
mournful “I Dreamed a
Dream,” performed in one
take, is one of its most powerful moments. Unless you’re a
robot, your tear ducts will
react. But it is Hugh Jackman
as the Christ-like Jean Valjean
who carries the film on his
shoulders, pleading to God
above to end the misery in
“Bring Him Home.”

Lincoln
Premiering March 26
If there’s one reason to watch this film, it’s for Daniel
Day-Lewis’s outstanding portrayal of Lincoln as a
folksy, cagey, driven, morally righteous and haunted
leader, father and husband.
A film about Abraham Lincoln, simply called Lincoln,
and directed by Steven Spielberg, implies something
sweeping and epic – a defining portrait of America’s
most revered president. But we are shown only a brief
glimpse of a Civil War battlefield; Lincoln does not deliver the Gettysburg Address; his assassination takes
place off screen; and not a single vampire is slain.
Instead, the story focuses on a single month in
the 16th president’s life as he struggles to abolish
slavery. The country is divided by war, as is Lincoln’s
own family. His son (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
wants to join the Union Army, which Lincoln and his
wife (Sally Field) oppose. The result is an intimate and
powerful film. Barrett Hooper

Remember that annoying married couple in Knocked Up? Well,
Pete and Debbie (Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann) are back, only
now Debbie is in age-denial, Pete’s career’s in a tailspin, and the
couple’s sex life is, well, not quite what it used to be.
This is 40 has a loose, not-quite-polished feel, as though writerdirector Judd Apatow is winging it much of the time. This often results in unexpected hilarity and dangling subplots. But the actors,
including Jason Segel, Melissa McCarthy, Albert Brooks and John
Lithgow, provide plenty of charm while delivering wildly raunchy
dialogue. Apatow never met a bathroom joke he didn’t like. BH

Whether your idea of video games is
limited to flinging Angry Birds or you’re
a joystick junkie weaned on Asteroids,
Wreck-It Ralph is an inventive, subversive
kick. Filled with colourful cameos, the film
delivers a funny, yet surprisingly emotional journey with terrific voice performances
and a richly detailed, animated world.
Ralph (John C. Reilly) is tired of being
the villain of his Donkey Kong–like video
game – smashing things so that hero
Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer) can put them
back together – so he takes off across the
arcade in hope of hitting the reset button on his life. Stumbling clumsily from
game to game, Ralph’s meddling causes
a whole pile of videogame characters to
come together, and it’s up to Ralph to
become the hero he always dreamed of
becoming. Game on. BH
Life of Pi
Premiering March 12
Director Ang Lee has turned a visionary book (by Canadian
author Yann Martel) into a cinematic vision of sweeping beauty.
“Animals have souls,” 16-year-old Pi (Suraj Sharma) stubbornly
informs his father, who runs a zoo in India. “I have seen it in
their eyes.” His father then promptly forces his son to watch a
tiger devour a tethered goat. That single scene encapsulates the
powerful theme at the heart of this remarkable film: the interconnection of all living things.
When Pi, his family and numerous zoo animals embark on a
Japanese freighter in order to emigrate to Canada, a ferocious
storm sinks the vessel. Pi finds himself alone on a lifeboat with
several animals, including a tiger. What follows is a fable of
coexistence under brutal circumstances.
The film has a lyrical visual grandeur, and Lee provides a virtuoso demonstration of the majesty and intelligence of cinema,
leaving the shores of reality far behind. A superb journey!

ou know the old adage: “Good things come to those who wait.”

BBM Video with Screen Share
Similar to BBM Voice, which lets you chat for free with other BBM users anywhere in the world over Wi-Fi, BBM Video lets you switch from a BBM chat
to a BBM Video conversation with a simple tap. Not only can you catch up
with someone face-to-face using the BlackBerry’s front-facing camera, but
you can also initiate Screen Share, which lets the person you’re chatting
with see what’s on your screen, be it a document, photo, game, web browser
and so on. Or tap to share what your rear camera sees.
Time Shift & BlackBerry

All smartphones take photos, but only
BlackBerry 10 devices have Time Shift
mode, which captures a few milliseconds before and after you snap the
photo. Scroll back and forth to select
the perfect shot – perhaps one where
your eyes aren’t closed and another,
a split second later, where your friend
isn’t sticking his tongue out – and then
42

combine them into the same photo.
How crazy cool is that? Once you’ve
created the perfect shot by turning a
couple of dials with your fingertips,
weave those moments together to
create a movie in just a couple of
swipes using Story Maker, and then
share it online. BlackBerry 10 also
shoots super-sharp HD video.
BlackBerry
Keyboard
BlackBerry now has touchscreen
typing. What’s more, the new virtual
BlackBerry Keyboard learns how
you type and cleverly adapts, so you
can write faster, and with the least
amount of effort. Your BlackBerry
will suggest words as you type, and if
you’d like to use them, simply swipe
up on the screen and keep going.
What else?
We’re just scratching the surface
on what else BlackBerry 10 devices
are capable of. There’s also BlackBerry Remember, which lets you
view and organize your interests,
ideas and projects in one single
location; BlackBerry Balance,
to help you manage your personal
and professional lives on your one
device (all your personal apps and
info are kept separate and private
from work data); a redesigned
BlackBerry Browser that’s fast,
powerful and versatile enough to
handle whatever you throw at it.
Also noteworthy: the huge amount
of apps, music and videos now

revamped and renamed BlackBerry World storefront. Or touch
your NFC-enabled BlackBerry to

DITCH
THE DISH
Why Digital TV is Better Than Satellite
TEXT Jason Scott Alexander | ANIMATION Lollipop
There was a time when digital TV was
piped into homes via ugly and fussy
satellite dishes. Often prone to weather
damage and sometimes needing updates
and maintenance, they may have given
us more channels, but, arguably, at an
annoying cost. Today, thankfully, you
can get digital TV delivery in a much
more sophisticated form, with much
more choice and advanced features.
Bottom line: there are some distinct downsides to satellite TV,
and so many upsides to digital
cable. Still need convincing?
Here are four reasons why we
think Rogers digital TV is
superior to satellite.
44
connectedrogers.ca
REASON NO. 1
Say goodbye to weather worries
Snow, wind, hail – what, me worry?
REASON NO. 2
Freedom to roam
Watch TV wherever you want with Rogers Whole Home PVR
Most households today have more than one TV;
upstairs, downstairs, in the kitchen and bedrooms –
we’re watching in every room of the house. With
many satellite dishes, you are limited to where you can
enjoy digital TV, let alone the fact that you can only
do just that – watch – without being able to pause,
rewind, start or stop programming wherever you wish,
as you can with Rogers Whole Home HDPVR.
Take the Follow Me TV feature, for instance: You can
begin watching a recorded show in your downstairs
living room, pause it, and then resume viewing in the
kitchen as you prepare supper – all without missing
a second. What’s more, up to four TVs can access
the same recorded program at once. Or perhaps it’s
family movie night, but your daughter doesn’t want
to miss the Justin Bieber special airing at the same
time. Everyone can enjoy the flick together on the big
screen while recording the Biebs for later viewing.
In all, up to two NextBox™ HDPVRs and six NextBox HD terminals may be connected, allowing for a
highly flexible network of access, play and management over your recordings from as many as eight
TVs throughout the home. With capability to record
up to four HD shows simultaneously, plus pause,
rewind and play live TV from any set in the house,
you’re all set.

REASON NO. 3
Revolutionize your viewing
Watch, record and schedule programs with the Rogers Anyplace TV Home Edition app
Maybe the most exciting thing to happen to digital TV since HD and on-demand programming is
the integration of mobile internet devices, such as
tablets and smartphones, into TV land. And where
there are devices, there are apps – none more
remarkable than the Rogers Anyplace TV Home
Edition app, which lets you control your TV viewing, recording and scheduling tasks.
Got an Apple or Android tablet or smartphone? You
can access the full seven-day Interactive Program
Guide any time, any place, so you’ll always know
what’s on and remain in complete control of your
TV at all times. You can also turn your iPad or iPhone
into a remote control using the app, and quickly
navigate programs using the Enhanced Guide.
The Rogers Anyplace TV Home Edition app brings
all your digital boxes together, allowing you to set
PVR recordings on the fly and control devices from

any room. With remote management capabilities,
you can use your smartphone, tablet or laptop
to set your PVR to record the shows you love,
even when you’re not home. PVR getting full? No
sweat: with just a few taps you’re deleting old
recordings and freeing up space for new shows, all
from your mobile device, wherever you are.
With integrated streaming, you can even enjoy
watching live TV channels right on your tablet,
over Wi-Fi from anywhere in the home through
your Rogers Hi-speed Internet connection. There
are 26 live TV channels available.
Best part of all? It’s absolutely free! You simply
need to be an Ontario Rogers digital TV customer

No more ugly dishes
Say goodbye to that eyesore affixed to your home’s exterior
You’ve seen them perched on apartment building
balconies, staring forlornly up into the sky like little
lost pigeons. And everyone on your block knows the
neighbour who has one calling attention to their
natty roofline – such a shame that the eye misses
their beautiful cherry blossom tree in full bloom.
Nope, there’s certainly nothing aesthetically pleasing about satellite dishes: they’re large, drab grey
discs that are oh so ‘80s.
Aside from the negative curb appeal, dish installations carry other potentially problematic side
effects. Whether installed by a professional or DIY,
the installation often requires numerous permanent
holes. There could be drilling into the concrete or
brick wall or roof of your building, and thread-
ing much cable throughout your house. For these
reasons, many condos, apartments and freehold
landlords have strict rules regarding the installation of satellite dishes. Also, dish mount locations
may be regulated by local bylaws. And don’t even
think about going covert! Dishes in eastern Canada
require clear southwest exposure and need to be
placed in direct line-of-site with the satellite (no
trees, buildings or overhangs blocking the dish)
– and, no, they do not work indoors. Dish sizes
typically range from 50- to 120-cm wide, and the
limited bandwidth of their receivers means that you
can only run a few HD signals per dish. More dishes
equal more eyesores. Rogers digital TV, on the other
hand, is invisible to passersby.

LTE: Don’t get
left in the
DUST
The LTE network is the next generation of wireless internet.
Get on it or get left behind. Not sure it’s for you? Here’s why
everyone is getting onto LTE, and why you should, too
TEXT Jim Collins | ANIMATION Dynamic Mind
T
here are two types of people: fast adopters and those of us happy to wait a bit
longer before buying into whatever’s
new. But there comes a point when the slow
adopters realize: Wait a second, this is happening and I need to get this. Now. Today.
The Rogers LTE network is just such a thing.
Launched last year, it’s Canada’s fastest wireless internet*– so fast that it’s changing the
way we play, work and communicate on our
smartphones, tablets and mobile internet
devices. No longer niche or just for tech geeks,
LTE has proven itself an essential part of many
Canadians’ lives.
Still need convincing? Here are five reasons
LTE is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. The
next generation of wireless is already here.
Time to join in.
*Based on tests comparing download speeds on the Rogers LTE network vs. Bell and Telus’ LTE networks within Rogers LTE coverage area. LTE device, LTE SIM and plan required.
Actual experienced speeds may vary based on device, topography and environmental conditions, network congestion and other factors. Rogers LTE network available in select
Canadian cities. Visit rogers.com/LTE for coverage.

49
THE RIGHT
DEVICE FOR YOU
It might seem trite, but we truly are living
in a wireless world. We’re demanding more
from our smartphones and tablets than ever
before – the ability to communicate, work
and play with virtually no interruption or lag.
We want it all, and we want it now. The mobile world is increasingly complex, and only
LTE-capable devices are able to meet this
demand. LTE has become the de facto network for the best new devices, from Apple to
Samsung, LG to BlackBerry.
Rogers offers a wide selection of LTE-ready
smartphones, tablets and wireless internet
devices. Whether your preference is Android,
iOS or BlackBerry, Rogers has an LTE-enabled
device just for you. It’s only a matter of time
before the device in your hand is LTE. For a
complete list of LTE devices, visit
connectedrogers.ca/lte_devices
50
connectedrogers.ca
CROSS-CANADA
COVERAGE
Just as the array of LTE-capable devices has
grown, so has Canada-wide LTE coverage.
Rogers was the first to bring LTE into Canada, and the coverage has since grown to
cover a huge chunk of the country, with new
markets opening up in rapid succession. LTE
now reaches close to 60% of Canadians, and
Rogers keeps expanding that coverage from
coast to coast.
But what if the Rogers LTE network isn’t yet
available where you live? There’s a strong
chance LTE will soon reach you, so having
an LTE device means you’ll be ready when
it does. And in the meantime, any Rogers
LTE device works beautifully on existing 4G
HSPA+ and EDGE networks. Plus, if you travel
to an LTE area, your phone will automatically
switch to the LTE network at no extra cost
without having to do a thing. View the Rogers
LTE coverage map at rogers.com/lte.
SPEED! SPEED!
SPEED!
When it comes down to it, LTE is all about
speed. And we’re not just talking a slight increase over previous networks – we’re talking
a revolutionary increase that’s significantly
faster. As in, Usain Bolt faster. When you’re
using your phone or tablet, you’ll notice a
huge difference when you’re loading websites
and watching videos. With 4G HSPA+, the
number climbed to a maximum theoretical
download speed of 21 Mbps. LTE reaches way
beyond these networks with theoretical maximum network speeds of up to 150 Mbps.*
Rogers LTE devices currently support maximum theoretical download speeds of up to
100 Mbps, and typical speeds between 12
and 25 Mbps or up to 40 Mbps on select devices*. The takeaway? That wireless device in
your hand is now as fast, or faster, than your
at-home, wired internet. You really have to try
it out to believe it. *See rogers.com/lte for full details.
READY FOR
THE FUTURE
Still not sure you need LTE? If the massive
increase in speed didn’t sway you, or the fact
that all major smartphone and tablet manufacturers are making LTE-capable devices, or
that LTE allows you to do much more with
your device, across Canada and abroad, then
perhaps you need a basic truth rolled your
way: LTE is here to stay. Unlike previous networks, which were mere improvements on
previous ones, LTE is light years ahead of all
former networks, and represents not just the
present day, but also the future.
As devices get more sophisticated and the
Rogers LTE network continues to grow, so
will speeds and mobile capabilities. We will
no longer blink when deciding whether or
not to download a movie on our phones, or
open a massive file. Fact is, this is already
the case. You’d know this if you were on LTE!
What are you waiting for?
MULTI-TASKING MANIACS
With LTE, you can:
Smartphones, tablets and mobile internet devices are now
built to handle much more complex tasks. We expect to use
them as mini-computers: video chatting, media streaming,
virtually instant downloading and true multi-tasking – this is
what an LTE device is capable of. Having a wireless device that
can’t do these things is like driving a moped on the Autobahn.
Since first launching the LTE network, Rogers has seen an
80% increase in mobile data usage, a number expected to
grow six-fold by 2016. We’re doing more on our phones than
ever before, all thanks to LTE. To put it even more plainly,
everything you’re doing now on your phone or even your
home computer, you will do much faster on LTE.

images in a split second.

other media with virtually no lag,
even with other programs running.
s Make video calls and work with

STAY

THIS
SPRING
BREAK
TEXT Jim Collins | ILLUSTRATION Greg Hall
Yes, it’s only one week, but for those living
in the winter wonderland that is Canada,
spring break isn’t so much a few days off
as it is a godsend. For some, it’s a chance to
travel south to warmer climes; for others,
it’s a chance to ski and drink cocoa in a
chalet. Then there’s the lucky few who get
to travel abroad.
Wherever you’re going, one thing is certain: taking a break no longer means
going offline. From Rogers One Number
to mobile internet devices, Smart Home
Monitoring to Rogers Anyplace TV, there
are plenty of ways for Rogers customers
to stay connected this March break. Here’s
a handy roundup.
MARCH/APRIL 2013

TEXT & TALK FROM YOUR
COMPUTER OR TABLET
ROGERS ONE NUMBER
Chat as long as you like
without using up any of
your wireless minutes.
GETAWAY: You’re on the slopes in Whistler, B.C., on a ski
vacation with your buddies. You promised your girlfriend
you’d check in with her daily, and your dad wants to hear all
about the fresh powder you’ve been mastering.
DILEMMA: Calling your girlfriend every night uses up a lot
of your wireless minutes and incurs long-distance charges.
SOLUTION: Call from your laptop or the computer in your
chalet using Rogers One Number.
Rogers One Number lets you make and receive voice and
video calls from any internet-connected compatible tablet
or PC. This way, you’re able to chat for as long as you like,
without using up any of your wireless minutes, and because
you’re making the call through your internet connection,
there are no long-distance charges. So, wherever you are,
you can call any Canadian number for free – right from your
computer or tablet – using your wireless number. You can
also send and receive text messages that look exactly like
you’re sending them from your wireless phone.
GET OUTFITTED: Signing up for Rogers One Number is
free and easy. All you need is a Rogers wireless phone and
postpaid account, plus access to an internet connection. To
video chat with someone, both parties must be registered
with Rogers One Number. Get started by heading online to
rogersonenumber.ca and click Register Now.

ON-THE-GO WI-FI FOR
THE WHOLE FAMILY
MOBILE HOTSPOT FROM ROGERS
GETAWAY: You’ve decided to brave the long drive and head to
Florida with the family. Seven days of fun in the sun!
DILEMMA: There are five of you in the car, and while the driver
and front-seat passenger listen to tunes, the rest of the crew
wants to play online games and stream movies.
SOLUTION: Place the Rocket™ mobile hotspot on the dash (or
leave it in your purse or pocket, it’ll still work) and the entire
family can connect to the internet (up to 10 Wi-Fi
devices at once).
The Rocket mobile hotspot is one of several mobile internet
devices available from Rogers. Need to connect more people?
The Rocket hub lets you connect up to 15 devices at once (note:
works in Canada only). Slightly larger than a DVD case, the Rocket hub is portable and just needs an electrical outlet to power
on and create a Wi-Fi network for the whole family. Need connectivity for only one laptop or person at a time? The ultra-mobile
Rocket stick plugs into your laptop’s USB port and gets you
connected in places where you wouldn’t normally get Wi-Fi, such
as on a beach or in a boat.
Connect up to 15 Wi-Fi
devices at once for an
on-the-go, reliable,
mobile hotspot.
GET OUTFITTED: The Rocket stick, mobile hotspot and hub are
all available at rogers.com/mobileinternet. Choose the device
that best suits your needs, and select a wireless internet plan to
keep you connected on the go.

ROGERS ANYPLACE TV
GETAWAY: Where aren’t you going this March break?
Between a few days at the cottage, your daughter’s hockey

your kids – and yourself – entertained during down time?

hit shows such as Modern Family and tons of kids’ content,
wherever you are, with Rogers Anyplace TV. Whether you’re

HOME & AWAY ONLINE MANAGER
GETAWAY: It wouldn’t be March break without a trip to the beach
– the Dominican Republic, Mexico, maybe Cuba. Seven days of allinclusive goodness. Bring on the sun.
DILEMMA: Yes, you’re on vacation, but you also need to stay on top
of what’s going on back at home, and that means you can’t be totally
unavailable all week.
SOLUTION: Customize and manage your Rogers Home Phone

specific callers to another number. You can also forward busy or unanswered calls to another number, so you never miss a call now or when
you return from vacation.

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR HOME
WHILE YOU’RE AWAY
ROGERS SMART HOME MONITORING
GETAWAY: You’re at your relative’s place in a different province.
You’re on a beach somewhere south. You’re wandering the streets of
a European city. Heck, maybe you’re just working 24/7 as your family
travels. In any case, there’s no one home.
DILEMMA: No matter where you are, you want to know your house is
protected from intruders, from a fire, from a basement leak – from anything that can go wrong. Imagine the peace of mind that comes from
knowing that your house is safe when you’re not there.
SOLUTION: Rogers Smart Home Monitoring is both a home security
and a home monitoring system. It isn’t something you invest in for
your week’s vacation; it’s an investment in 24/7 security year-round.
It lets you do all sorts of stuff – arm or disarm your security system,
control your thermostat and lights – from a smartphone, tablet or laptop. The system can even sense when a door or window is opened, or
if there’s smoke or water leakage. You can set up a video camera for a
live feed, or receive email alerts whenever a door is opened.
GET OUTFITTED: Set up a free in-person consultation to determine
what hardware you require. Is your home already outfitted with security sensors? You can keep them. Call 1-866-865-4722 for more
information or to order.

INTERNET
THEN & NOW
TEXT Bonnie Staring | ILLUSTRATION Peter & Maria Hoey
Remember back before the web? It’s
hard to imagine or even remember
what those days were like. After all,
the internet has become an integral
part of our lives, something we rely
on so heavily to do, well, virtually
everything. And yet as recently as
15 years ago, we had to do so many
things – shop, communicate, even
flip through actual photo albums –
on foot, in person or by hand. Crazy,
we know. How times have changed.
CONNECTED TAKES A LOOK BACK AT WHAT
PEOPLE DID PRE-INTERNET. HOW DID WE GET
THINGS DONE? HOW ARE WE DOING IT NOW?
MARCH/APRIL 2013
63
TASK: SHARING PHOTOS
Then:
Now:
Innocent family members were held prisoner on
the couch, subjected to a photo buff’s never-ending
slide show of vacation, family and pet photos. Slide
trays never seemed to load properly, and they always smelled of burning dust.
When’s the last time you saw a film camera, let
alone a slide projector? Now we snap digital pics
and post them online. Photo sharing social networks such as Instagram allow you to share your
photos with the masses in an instant. It’s like having friends and family right with you on that beach
or at the game. Plus, Instagram features cool filters
to help your pics look more professional.
Time required: hours, sometimes days
Time required: minutes
Upload and download HD photos and videos virtually in seconds on the Rogers LTE network. With speeds comparable to
your wired internet at home, you’ll be posting in no time. You won’t believe the difference.
64

TASK: SHOPPING
Then:
Now:
Finding the best deals involved getting to know
shopkeepers, leafing through paper flyers, travelling from store to store and, when bargains were
actually in stock, hauling everything home. Most of
us didn’t bother trying to source unique items such
as out-of-print books unless we had at least three
months to search. Back then, you had to know
someone who knew someone.
Everyone (including obsessive bargain hunters) can
now shop from the comfort of their couch, bed or
anywhere you can access the internet. From clothes
to groceries to you-name-it, you can order what
you need and have it delivered right to your door.
Hard-to-find items (a mint-condition Star Trek figure or “Bazinga!” hoodie, anyone?) are just a web
or eBay search away.

TASK: STAYING IN TOUCH
Then:
Now:
Information between friends and family used to
travel at slug-like speeds. With friends, you’d write
them lengthy letters or plan to meet in person
(which may have involved baking a Bundt cake or
being interrupted by Mabel Lewis, the neighbourhood gossip). With family, a system involving fridge
notes may have been employed. For out-of-town
relatives, smoke signals.
Knowing all that’s happening with friends and
family is as simple as a quick email, Facebook
browse or Twitter exchange. The internet has made
the world one big, connected place – 2.4 billion
people are now online. It’s easy to get the scoop on
upcoming events, know who’s dating whom, who’s
not talking to one another and when Mabel Lewis’
daughter’s tell-all novel is being published.

TASK: EXPRESSING YOUR OPINION
Then:
Now:
You’d stand on a soapbox, proudly proclaim your
thoughts and wait for the world – or, well, even one
person – to notice. Enterprising influencers distributed flyers (stating “The Apocalypse is coming” or
“Rutabagas are evil”), or passed around petitions
to protest one thing or another. Organizing meetings or rallies was challenging without knowing
whom to invite or who would attend.
Connecting people to ideas, opinions and worldchanging happenings is easy. You can post your
thoughts on your own blog, deliver a witty podcast
or simply search for like-minded individuals or
groups on social media sites. Use Twitter to follow
powerful people, or express your own captivating
self in 140 characters, with hashtags like #ihaterutabagas or #elvisisalive, so others will join your tribe.

SRI LANKA
Stay connected in Southeast Asia’s top travel destination
TEXT Jaclyn Law
Where is the best place to travel in 2013? According to Lonely
Planet, the answer lies in a tiny island in Southeast Asia: Sri
Lanka. With more than two millennia of cultural history,
world-class beaches, incredible food and wilderness adventures
galore, Sri Lanka offers a wealth of riches for any traveller. Civil
conflict battered the island in years past, and 2004’s tsunami
devastated its shores, but now peace prevails and tourism is
making a strong comeback – at affordable prices. Now’s the time
to go, before the crowds take notice. Here are some can’t-miss
highlights, plus details on staying connected while away.

WILD WORLD
Once a key stop along ancient trade routes, the island
has seen the rise and fall of
kingdoms that make Game
of Thrones seem tame. Add
to this the blossoming of
religions and the arrival
and departure of European
colonists, each leaving a
mark, and you’ve got quite
a storied past.
The country features
several UNESCO World
Heritage sites, including
the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the sacred
city of Kandy. The latter is
the home of the Temple of
the Tooth Relic, otherwise
known as the sacred tooth
of Buddha.
Sri Lanka boasts a stunning
array of wildlife. Although
it’s small, the country has
10 national parks and seven
bird sanctuaries, and is
home to more than 40
endangered species, making
it a less costly way for tourists to experience safaristyle sights than in much of
Africa or Asia.
Eco-adventures abound:
go on a safari and find species such as the Sri Lankan
elephant and Sri Lankan
leopard in their natural
habitat, join an excursion to
see whales and dolphins at
play, or go camping in the
country’s lush jungles. No
need to pack a tent – tour
companies provide all the
supplies you’ll need for
your overnight adventure.
While exploring Sri Lanka,
it’s simple to stay in touch
with family and friends back
home. Rogers’ Talk & Text
Travel Packs include affordable options for Asia (which
covers Sri Lanka), starting
at just $50 for 15 minutes
of talk time and 100 sent
texts. If you go over your
alloted minutes and texts,
you’ll get low rates for the
entire month until your Pack
expires. For more info, visit

about the cost of staying

Make sure you take in the

rivers and lagoons; and be
sure to hit the rapids at the

Need to dry off? Take a

either: take flight with a
