ABYC Wiring Rules, available here, mandate that neither battery terminal via any wiring or otherwise
must touch any metal that can get other than absolutely dry. The Bonding System must make no
electrical contact to either battery terminal. A breach of this internationally recognized Wiring Rule
will result in insurance against corrosion being void. The correct procedure is to prove electrical
insulation (isolation) at all battery wiring under full power and fully operational conditions, from all

Metal corrosion explanation:
Metal corrosion is caused by electrolytic action, termed electrolysis, between damp or wet metal or
heating / cooling systems via any other than absolutely dry contact to the Earth. Electrolysis is
particles of metal being dissolved from your metal by battery current. Battery current is DC - Direct
Current so always flows in the same direction carrying particles of your metal with it. AC (Mains
power) is Alternating Current that reverses direction every half cycle (Hertz or 1/60 or 1/50 second)
so dissolved particles will be replaced every half cycle. So AC cannot cause electrolysis corrosion.
All electronics must use DC. All electrolysis is eliminated by the SeaBis System under actual live use
conditions.
In doubt? Ask any manufacturing jeweler how he plates gold onto base metal. The gold is your
(metal / engine / hull) damp or wet metal and the (jewelry) base metal is the Earth.

Metal corrosion has three causes:
Rust
Is of very low ferocity compared to electrolysis corrosion. It can only be present when there
is any moisture in the air. Rust is easily prevented by paint or plating after electrolysis is
eliminated by the SeaBis System.
Galvanic
Compared to electrolysis corrosion galvanic corrosion is also of very low ferocity. Galvanic
corrosion is easily eliminated by anodes but only after electrolysis is eliminated by the SeaBis
System. Sacrificial Anodes can then work as designed. Galvanic corrosion is caused by the
natural voltage between two different metals in a conductor such as fresh or salt moisture or
water. This voltage never exceeds 1 point 2 volts and current is in the millionths of an amp
Galvanic corrosion is at a very very low level compared to the electrolysis corrosion we are
only too familiar with.
Electrolysis
Is 1,000 to 1,000,000 greater ferocity than rust or galvanic corrosion. It is generated by the
motor / plumbing / railway system / engine / propeller / metal hull / keel / any metal being at
a voltage different to the Earth or any other source. It flows as current from the installation
to the Earth, other vessels and installations. Electrolysis corrosion can only be measured as

How to Eliminate Electrolysis Corrosion:
SeaBis Explanation:
SeaBis indicates electrolysis capable current, and its severity. When Process of Elimination
instructions, supplied with the SeaBis System are completed, all metal / engine / propeller /
metal hull / keel will be disconnected (electrically Open Circuit) from the Earth / soil / air /
moisture / and water. Your metal is immune to electrolysis corrosion. It cannot create or be
influenced by electrolysis corrosion. Electrolysis corrosion is conquered.
Most electronics / electrics only fully power up when in full use, and full use is often when
the electrolysis occurs. It is therefore advisable to install and leave SeaBis turned on
permanently. When SeaBis detects electrolysis it will alarm and indicate the severity and
direction of the electrolysis. Fault finding is by unplugging / disconnection of equipment until
SeaBis indicates Normal then follow Process of Elimination instructions to complete the
repair.
Continuous flashing of “AC only alarm” indicates AC voltage component exceeding 2 volts.
Your battery life is at least halved. The AC isolating transformer may not be effective or you
may be using a electrically noisy inverter or there may be poor earth connection or reversed
Active, Neutral or Earth. Ask a Licensed Electrician to check no hull DC path to shore AC
mains power either via mains active, neutral or earth. SeaBis will detect and indicate this DC
path. Follow Process of Elimination instructions, supplied with SeaBis. As a last resort only,
use an isolating transformer to stop this path. An incorrectly connected Isolating Transformer
and associated vessel Earth connection introduces a lethal risk. It is far better to use Seabis to

How to Eliminate Corrosion:
Connect the SeaBis unit:
Connect the brown wire to battery positive and the blue wire to battery negative. Connect the
green/yellow wire to metal of the motor / engine, or metal housing / hull / plumbing / railway line.
Install anywhere dry. However never connect anything except batteries inside the battery box.
Batteries produce hydrogen gas.

Why does SeaBis succeed when a multi meter must fail?
A multi meter when used to measure current actually inserts a resistance in series with the circuit to
be measured. Doing so disturbs the actual resistance commonly by 100:1. So its chance of being
correct is 1%. In addition it actually measures voltage, not current so It has no chance at all of
eliminating metal corrosion. The SeaBis unit does not insert anything into the circuit to be measured.

Why does corrosion occur?
There are commonly misunderstandings so I will start from the beginning:

Assuming you are sitting at your desk and the light is on. Voltage is supplied to the lamp by the
switch. Current flows through the lamp metal element causing illumination and slowly dissipating the
element. The metal element in the lamp is slowly dissipating in the same manner as electrolysis

corrosion of all metals. Holding a cloth so the lamp does not burn your fingers, and with the light still
turned on, you remove the lamp. The lamp goes out and the element ceases to dissipate. The voltage,
measured in volts, to the lamp socket: at 110 or 240 volts, is still applied. The current, measured in
milli-amps, through the element has ceased. There is no point in measuring voltage – it has not
changed. Measuring current will immediately show the element dissipation has ceased.

Myths:
"Shore (AC) power causes electrolysis corrosion". Very very unlikely:
Electrolysis corrosion is caused by electrolytic action between damp or immersed metal or cooling
system via any dry to wet contact to the Earth. Electrolytic action is particles of metal being dissolved
from your metal by battery current. Battery current is DC - Direct Current so always flows in the same
direction. So permanently dissolves metal particles, every hour of every day. AC (Mains power) is
Alternating Current so dissolved particles taken of in the first half cycle when current flows left to
right, will be replaced in the second half Hertz when current flows right to left. So AC cannot cause
electrolysis corrosion.
"Anodes will stop electrolysis corrosion". Even more unlikely:
A one kilogram anode produces one micro amp - one millionth of an amp, of protective current.
Electrolysis is commonly in one hundredth too several amps of current. So we would need a lot more
than 1,000 kilograms of anode! I have personally measured 9 amps caused by a VHF Transceiver with
a 9 amp power supply. When SeaBis proves electrolysis is eliminated then Anodes will stop galvanic
corrosion.
"Stopping electrolysis is too hard"
Only for those who make a living repairing electrolysis corrosion. 20 years ago electrolysis corrosion
barely existed because marine equipment was professionally insulated from all metal that could get
damp to wet. Today, larger tugs, military vessels, professional vehicles, most trains and larger aircraft
are correctly insulated (isolated) so do not experience electrolysis. Most experienced Professional
Fishermen know what not to buy. Unfortunately most Recreational and some Commercial and

The real culprit is Direct Current (DC). It is supplied from Batteries. DC carries metal particles, 24
hours every day, 7 days a week, every week of every year, permanently to the seabed or Earth. DC
flows in one direction only so continually depletes all metal in even other than dry contact with water
or the Earth.
There is a common misunderstanding the Mains AC, Shore Power, causes electrolysis corrosion. That
belief is incorrect in 99.9% of instances: AC is Alternating Current: It reverses direction every 1/100
or 1/120 second. So if it removes a particle of metal in the first 1/100 second it will replace it in the
second 1/100 second. Common sense. In the 99.9% and the remaining 0.1% the SeaBis System will
instantly identify the danger of corrosion and Process of Elimination will repair the cause.
How do I use SeaBis with multiple battery installations?
Where the battery banks can be connected together, usually for charging and reserve energy, use one
SeaBis connected to the House (major use) bank. When the other banks are switch in circuit SeaBis

Where the battery banks cannot be connected in parallel, there is a choice of:

Using a multi meter on any current range will not find the cause and is taking an immediate risk of
causing death by battery explosion. That is a bad way to die.
The use of a multi meter on voltage cannot find the cause. It will waste your time and money while
electrolysis corrosion will continue.
Using a multi meter on ohms cannot eliminate electrolysis. The multi meter uses a voltage far too low
to prove anything at one millionth of an amp. It will waste your time and money while electrolysis
corrosion will continue.
