Message from the Board -- Pete Gulliver, President
In comparative terms the past month has been quiet—for Cathie and me. While Cathie and I, and some Carolina Shores friends,
spent time in Key West (The Conch Republic and the Halloween Fantasy Festival are---unique), and then went on a cruise in the
Eastern Caribbean, the rest of the Board was finalizing the 2011 budget. They also reviewed plans to make health and safety
improvements to the office area of the POA Clubhouse, reviewed specifications for enhancing the security features at the pool
and picnic area, worked with our landscape contractor to improve our irrigation system and bush hog some buffer zones.
Carolina Shores Annual Holiday Party
We are holding our Holiday Party off site. The reason we are doing this is because the Brunswick County Fire Marshal has
determined that the maximum safe capacity of our club house is 150 people. In order to have enough room for every resident to
attend the party and stay as long as he or she wants to stay, we needed to find a location that is not restricted by this capacity.
By the way, the 150 person capacity isn’t a suggestion, it is an absolute maximum. If the Board chose to ignore this maximum
capacity and someone was injured or worse, the board and the community would be in a morally and legally indefensible
position.
Our recreation committee has solved this almost unsolvable dilemma by obtaining the exclusive use of CAPTAIN JOHN’S
SEAFOOD HOUSE on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5, FROM 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A CASH BAR IS AVAILABLE – THIS IS
NOT BYOB.

Al Franklin- Resident since 1996. EDUCATION: AA-Business Mgmt.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Retired US Government and Real Estate. I was a field supervisor for 5
years while employed by the US Government. I managed my family’s electrical contracting
business. I served as Vice President of my POA in Maryland and Virginia. I have served on the
Carolina Shores ACC Committee for four years. I have been on the Carolina Shores POA Board
for ten years. I know the history of the POA and the guidelines of the Declaration of
Restrictions. BOARD MEMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Keeping the dues down and
ensuring that all the ACC requirements are followed. BOARD AND COMMUNITY AREAS
OF INTEREST: Vice President and Architectural Control.
Peter Gulliver – Resident since 2006. EDUCATION: BS-Parks; MBA-Finance.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: I served on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Rockland
County and the Fort Montgomery State Historic Site and as President of the Highland Falls Lions
Club. My career related responsibilities included directing the maintenance, operations and
administration of one of the largest state parks (Bear Mountain Park) in the state of New York.
The facility contained parking lots, an Olympic size swimming pool, picnic areas, roads, athletic
fields, a museum and a zoo. It also had an ice skating rink, sewage treatment plants, several
buildings listed on the national register of historic places including a 62 room hotel complex with
banquet facilities for more than 600 ( Bear Mountain Inn) and a revolutionary war battle site.
Since moving to Carolina Shores with my wife, Cathie, I’ve served on the ACC including 18
months as Chairperson. I’m now completing my second year on the POA Board and the last year
as President. I’m also a Master Gardener and a regular volunteer at the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension greenhouse
complex. BOARD MEMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Maintaining our dues at a low rate, while maintaining and improving
our common areas, ensuring that our Declaration of Restrictions is fairly enforced. Also, maintaining to nurture our relationship
with the Town of Carolina Shores and the other communities within our Town. BOARD AND COMMUNITY AREAS OF
INTEREST: Finance and President.
Kerry Jarrell – Resident since 2007. EDUCATION: BS-Accounting (University of Alaska
Anchorage). EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: The majority of my career was spent as a CPA, and an
Auditor. I have worked first with banks, schools and municipalities; and then as a Business
Manager for a public school district. I served on the Board of Alaska State Teachers Retirement
System, as Board Chairman for the Alaska Public Entity Insurance Company and on numerous
other Boards, Committees, Task Forces, etc. dealing with financial reporting and management for
public entities. BOARD MEMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Since joining the POA Board in
2009, I have revised the accounting procedures, increased Board involvement and oversight of the
budget, conducted the first workshop for facility planning and kept the CSPOA within budget for
2009 and 2010. In 2011, we hope to continue to maximize benefits for members while controlling
dues. I plan to continue the close fiscal management that has marked my first two years on the
Board. I will monitor the cost of services for our members to prevent large increases in dues. At the same time, our association
has a responsibility to properly maintain our facilities for the enjoyment of current as well as future members. I will continue to
support the goals for maintaining the facilities as outlines in the POA Reserve Study. BOARD AND COMMUNITY AREAS
OF INTEREST: Finance.

Sea Notes Joins with the Brunswick Bands – Sue Farrell
The Sea Notes Choral Society is pleased to announce that they are combining with The Brunswick Big Band and The
Brunswick Concert Band for a holiday extravaganza, "Christmas Holiday Pops". This is the first
time that these three groups have performed together and we want you to mark your calendars now
so that you don't miss it! The dates are Friday, December 10, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December
12, at 3:00 p.m. Note that Friday's performance starts at 7:30 (instead of 8) and we'd like you to be
in your seats by that time.

The concerts will be held at The Brunswick Community College Odell Auditorium. Cindy Sellers will be conducting The Sea
Notes, Frank Mahoney will conduct The Brunswick Big Band, and George Boberg is conducting The Brunswick Concert Band.

Recycle Center—Joyce Dunn
It’s time to get a New Recycling Center Sticker for the Town of Carolina Shores.
Beginning in 2011 the Town of Carolina Shores will issue new recycling center stickers (in a new color)
for residents every two years. The one currently on your vehicle will expire on February 11, 2011.
To get a new sticker you must apply at Town Hall on any business day from January 3 to February 10,
between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. When you come, bring with you a current driver’s license and the registration card
for each vehicle you wish to register.
If you are renting a property in the Town of Carolina Shores and wish to obtain a recycling sticker, you must present your
driver’s license and registration, along with a copy of your current lease or a utility bill and a letter from the property owner
authorizing you to use the recycling center. Stickers issued to property renters must be renewed once a year.
If you own a rental property in the Town, please be sure to inform your tenants about this change and give them written
authorization to use the recycling center.
The present stickers will only be good until February 11. After that date you will be turned away until you have the proper
identification sticker to enter the center. By issuing new stickers on a regular basis the Town will be able to ensure that the
recycling center is used only by legal residents of the town for disposal of their own trash and/or yard waste and not by people
who have moved away from the Town or by business owners trying to dispose of commercial debris.

The cooler, crisp fall weather has made tennis playing a wonderful thing. Come join your friends and
neighbors at our courts for open tennis every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 a.m. Hope to see

Carolina Shores Niners -- Betty Kibblehouse
The Niners will hold their Annual Christmas Party on Thursday, December 9, 2010, at 12:00 Noon. We have
reserved "The Grill House" in North Myrtle Beach. Everyone will order from the menu and pay on separate
checks. Spouses and guests are not invited. We will have a "Yankee Swap", so bring a wrapped gift (white
elephant or a real gift) to participate. We have had a lot of fun with this swap in the past and it really gets
you into the Christmas spirit.
The sign -up sheet will be on our Niners' desk at the golf pro shop. Please sign up by Monday, December 6,
2010. If you have any questions, please call Susan Jarrell at 575-2103. As always, we hope that you will come and have a
merry, merry luncheon.
Weekly Play: Niners play every Thursday morning at the Carolina Shores Golf Club. All ladies who only like to play nine

On Thursday, November 11, Barbara Kassner used her hybrid club to score a hole-in-one on the 110 yard #7
hole.
Winners in the game of 9 blind holes were first place, Dottie Meader at 32 net, Lois Howard with a 33 net for
second, and Barbara Juergens in third place with a 34.5. Patty Buck, Ilse Bateman, Dottie Meader and Marie
Strickler accomplished Birdies. Chip-ins were shared by Dottie Meader, Barbara Kassner and Nancy Sneska. Low putts score
of 27 was won by Marie Strickler.
Carolina Shores Sunday Scramble Group -- Gloria Schroppe & Elaine
Southard
On Sunday, November 14, we played a Captain's Choice game at Beachwood in North Myrtle Beach.
Thank you to our golf hosts, Laura Duncan and Carol Groner. The course was in great condition, the
weather was spectacular with a gorgeous Carolina blue sky and best of all, we had a terrific group of
golfers out to play! Each team member had to use their drive and second shot once per nine.
The results of play are as follows:

welcomed guests playing with us, Pauline Millosky, Pat Soule, and Geri and Ed McTighe. We hope you had a great day and
will be joining as members for 2011.
On Sunday, December 12, we will be having our annual Christmas Golf Tournament and Dinner at Crow Creek. Our golf hosts
for this event will be Sally Nolan and Mal MacRaild. There will be a cocktail hour with appetizers and a cash bar starting at
6:00 p.m. with dinner to follow. The sign-up sheet for golf is on the bulletin board at the POA Clubhouse. You will also find a
separate sign-up sheet for the dinner entree choices. Payment for the dinner is due to Gloria Schroppe by December 1.
As 2010 comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the Carolina Shores Sunday
Scramble Group for their support while I have been "at the helm". I was fortunate to have the assistance of two co-presidents,
Martha Hannon and Elaine Southard, during the past four years, and of course our treasurer, Will Groner. A special "Thank
You" from me to them.
Now on to 2011! Diana Mardall has volunteered to be our new president. I am sure I speak for everyone in saying we are there
to help and support you in any way we can!

has 76 members.
By the time you read this the Soup and Bake sale will have
already been held. Ro Buzzell and her entire committee have
worked many weeks on the planning of this annual sale. Signs
were made and telephone committees were formed to call residents
as
a reminder. Thank you if you were a participant. Proceeds are used in the beautification of our community, and we will have
the final totals in the Bulletin next month.
The “Ask the Experts” panel at our November meeting was Master Gardeners Carole Delude, Dominique Loewenstein, and
Richard Boland. General pruning questions and specifics were answered, with a reminder to rid the gardens of damaged,
diseased, dead and dying plants. Fertilization of grasses was discussed and members were urged to have their soil tested to
allow better growth of plants.
The club’s Christmas party will be held at the Crow Creek Dining Room on December 8. The all inclusive charge is $20. Call

Scholarship Luncheon and Card Party - It is not too soon to pick up your tickets for the Carolina Shores Garden Club
Scholarship Luncheon and Card Party. The event will be held on Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at the Ocean Garden Buffet
Restaurant in North Myrtle Beach. Tickets are $17.00 and can be purchased from Elaine Southard by calling 575-0536. This is
always a popular event and once again there will be a Gift Table. There are a limited number of tickets so call soon.
CALLING ALL ARTISTS AND CRAFTERS: The Gift Table for the Scholarship Luncheon and Card Party in 2010 featured
beautiful works of art donated by Carolina Shores residents. If you paint, photograph, knit, quilt, crochet, sew, sculpt or do any

form of art we would love to include your work. We appreciate your donations from last year and if you would like to
contribute again this year, please contact RoseMary Connell at 579-7520.
Our next meeting, after our Luncheon, will be on January 12 at 1:00 p.m. The topic will be “To Your Good Health”, a program
presented by The Family Tree Nursery. Hope to see everyone there…and bring a friend!

New Friends Activities – Merrilee Burns
Kathleen Kearney hosted the November meeting of New Friends. Members shared their
favorite Thanksgiving memories and traditions. After the meeting we went to Crow Creek
for a nice lunch.
The travel committee is busy planning many fun events. December 2 is the Holiday on Ice
show at the Palace Theater followed by dinner at Abuelos.
The Culinary Institute lunch is set for January 20th. Contact is Dot Robertiello. Cost is $12.00 and must be received by the
December 14 meeting of New Friends.
Lil Capuano is working on an Octoberfest trip to the Helendorf Inn, Helen GA. Dates are Thursday thru Sunday, September 29
– October 2, 2011, arranged through Carolina Travel. Included are room and taxes, three continental breakfasts, and a family
style luncheon at the Dillard House. Also included are a 4-hour Smoky Mt. train ride with lunch on board, 5-hours at the
Cherokee Casino with $10 casino money, a visit to the spectacular Tallulah Falls and one admission to the Festival and German

New Friends is collecting donations for the South Brunswick Interchurch Council Food Pantry. A $20 donation buys a complete
dinner kit for a family in need. If you can help, the following people are taking cash or checks: Wendy Horten, Barbara Jones
and Rose Mary Jones. Mary Pritchard, who works with this organization among many others, was honored by our North
Carolina Governor on November 16, 2010 for her selfless acts in helping the less fortunate.
The New Friends Holiday Pot Luck Luncheon is Tuesday, December 14. Bring a dish to share with your friends.

Needlework News -- Flo Pflaster and Pat Lehman
The Carolina Shores Needlework Club met on November 8 at the POA Clubhouse and enjoyed a good
time with Bettie Berber showing us her picture album of the items she made over the years along with a
newspaper clipping of the original club members. Mae Kerr provided a delicious coffee cake.
Our December meeting will be held on the 13th, and due to the time limit we have at the POA
Clubhouse on that day, we decided we would work on our projects until 11:30 a.m. We will go to Derbsters for lunch and will
order off the menu. I will make reservations. See you in December.

Book Discussion Group – Virginia Fischer
The Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group met on November 19 at the POA Library.
There were 12 members including two new members present. First we discussed "The Nanny
Diaries" by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus.
The group was disappointed in the Nanny Diaries mostly because of the flawed characters of
the nanny's employers. They were not kind or considerate, thinking only of impressing others of their own class of people and
ignoring their only child in the process. But there was some humor in the situations in these houses of the super rich. There are
times when it seems both sad and humorous to ordinary people. Nanny was a wonderful, kind person who put up with it all as
she was working her way through college. She was the one that possibly saved the life of her charge, "poor little rich boy
Grayer". Nanny really cared about him.
The second book discussed was "Strength in What Remains" by Tracy Kidder. Everyone who read this book loved it and urged
those who did not get to this second book to take the time to read it.
The December Meeting will be on Friday, December 17. The book to be discussed will be "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.
The meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by lunch at Noble's in honor of Cynthia Swanson who will be moving.
Cook’s Club News -- Dot Robertiello & Suzanne Kirksey
Everyone met on November 2 for the "Soup Extravaganza". I am sorry that I was unable to attend
as I was just too busy in sunny Florida. All the ladies made some very interesting soups: Suzanne
made "Sweet Potato Soup, which I was lucky enough to get a sampling of once I got home.
Yummy! Halla made an Islandic favorite "Prune Soup". Kathy E. made" Italian Sausage vegetable
Soup", Kathy K. made "Mushroom and Wild Rice Soup", Grayce made "Lettuce Soup" and Joan K.
made "Cream of Mushroom Soup". Everyone was delighted with the variety of soups.
The next meeting of Cook's Club will be on December 7. We will be celebrating "Christmas Brunch" with your choice of
goodies. Remember to come at 11:00 a.m. as we are back to back with the painting class, which starts at 1:00 p.m., so we must
be done by then.
We look forward to seeing you and tasting your brunch dishes on December 7 at 11:00 a.m. Bring your friends and neighbors to

New Horizons -- Betty Bond
Jean Jann promised us a "surprise" for our November meeting. She truly "out did" herself and
presented us with a Thanksgiving dinner. Jean went all out and we all have to extend a big
THANK YOU to her.
Our next meeting will be our Christmas luncheon. This will be held at Crow Creek on December
7, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. The cost of the luncheon is $20.00 per person. The club is going to pay
$3.00 per person (the gratuity) so each of us is responsible for $17.00. If you plan on attending, please be sure to give the money
to Pat Ferstler by December 4.
Dues will be due at our January meeting. $5.00 per year, a real bargain!
